I asked him to move faster several times and he said "Not for minimum wage I'm not"

He also txt messaged me later saying "I'm not going to clean up after the mess you make" in response to me telling him to clean off the make-line when he was leaning on the counter watching TV.

Seriously. Why even apply in the first place?

Good for you. Next time you have a surly employee let me know and I will come demean them while they are working by mocking the fact that they have to make sandwiches for me. I assume you work at a Subway type place, so if that's not the case then I apologize. My offer to demean your employees still stands though.

As long as you are not an asshole about it, you are in the right. One of my managers at my second job (the one that pays me less than half of what I make at my real job) is a condescending douche, and no fucking way I will continue to bust my ass for him for as little as he pays me if he keeps treating me like shit.

Lol, he came in to pick up his final check today, one day after he worked.

I told him he has to submit his SS card and Drivers License in order for me to pay him for the first time. I've repeatedly asked for the card while he was training.

I don't know, man. I get 5 application requests a day and only 1 person a month looks like quality enough to even consider hiring.

All I know is that people work until their first paycheck and once they have money in their pocket, they don't care about the job anymore. It's like they can't plan or predict they will run out of money in two weeks again.

Is it not illegal to not have checked this already? Either you have not filled out an I-9 for this employee or else you perjured yourself when you attested, under penalty of perjury, that you had examined the documents presented by said employee yada yada yada.

^ in answer to that question, probably because it doesn't sink in how little they're earning for their hours of drudgery until they get that first paycheck

at which point they probably lose 90% of whatever respect they had for the job

I know it's simple arithmetic (minimum wage*hrs worked - taxes = paycheck)

but not everybody is good at arithmetic

its $7.25 in North Carolina

this shows all the states minimum wage requirements, pretty interesting. I didnt know that Louisiana and Mississippi didnt have any minimum wage law at all. while DC, Connecticut and maybe a couple others are $8.25.

which is weird to every normal person on here who has done it before because it is not enjoyable, regardless of reasoning.

what you're really saying here is that you are able to fire minimum wage employess for not making sandwiches fast enough and we should respect your authority...right?

^^^^ States that don't have a separate law with a minimum wage fall under the Federal Minimum wage, which is $7.25/hr.

First, you should respect me first because I have the authority to fire you. I was the one to hire you over anyone else when you were looking for a job in the first place. I took you under my wing. I paid you to learn everything I had to pay in research and development for myself to learn from scratch. Nobody paid me to learn how to make my food. Nobody had easy answers to weird problems like how to get the pizza less greasy and how to get cheese to stick to a pizza when you pick it up by its crust. The physics for the latter is counter-intuitive and could only be solved through trial and error. It took me 11 months of different recipes, a different one every day, to get my current recipe. Respect is the least you could do.

Second of all, money isn't free to businesses. Customers are the ones that allow the business to have funds to pay your paycheck. He admitted he COULD go faster IF he was paid more. That means he was purposefully not going as fast as he could. I'm not talking about regular speed, I'm talking about 5 minutes to slice meat for a sub, and 10 minutes to build one sub.

Third, I work 16 hours a day, 365 days a year for 3 years, 8months, and 5 days straight and make less than minimum wage per hour. When I hear someone complaining about minimum wage, it is one of the biggest insults in the book. To purposefully not work your hardest and fastest because you are a little whiny bitch who thinks they deserve more when your output is worth about $2 an hour, you need a reality check.

This is the reason America is not going to last much longer.

not to mention that a severely mentally handicapped person could do the job so by not doing the job, he's shown himself to be less valuable to the company than a severely mentally handicapped person

most people pull shit like this when they think that the work is below them when the opposite is usually true

I wouldn't say reinvented.

im surprised with the painstakingly year-long pizza engineering you would be making more than minimum wage - you would think the world would be breaking down your door trying to get a slice of that amazing pizza

lol you guys clearly have never started a business or know somebody who has

little hint: occasionally, there's this small period where you are what's called "in the red" where you're not really making any profit but you're paying off the upstart costs as fast as you can while still incurring regular and new costs

hence why he's been open for a couple years and making less than minimum wage, i think he said it would take him 5-7 (correct me if im wrong, GxB) to get into the black or start making his money but once he does it's all his and nobody else's and how many of us can say that?

Some people go into business and put all their time and money into the business and still lose thousands, hundreds of thousands, and even millions of dollars. Most people don't go into business expecting to lose. They have the preconceived notion that their idea can't fail. Surprise!

Reasons to do it:

-it's the American Dream.
-there is no cap on how much you can earn, i am in control of my own wages.
-the sky-is-the-limit potential is there
-i don't ever have to worry about getting fired
-i have nobody to report to
-respect among peers. No one ever says you're a loser if you own a successful business.

Of course I could have never owned a pizza shop without other people's labor:

-the government for setting up the road system, heath system
-power, clean water, gas, telephone networks in place
-every piece of equipment was designed by *someone* and someone's company to be available for me
-every food product such as pizza toppings are guaranteed fresh, packaged safe, pasteurized by lots and lots of labor that we take for granted
-every chemical product I use was invented and tested to be safe to eat for human consumption but strong enough to kill things that harm us. Lots and lots of labor right there.
-the building that exists for me to operate out of is a product of someone else's labor.

To put all this in perspective, for me to make money off the bat wouldn't be very fair for society. My business wouldn't be possible without the hard, relatively thankless work of millions of humans.
I have to repay my debt to society and that is why I haven't made much money over the last 4 years.

Now, in about two years, the amount of money I get to keep rather than expend will be in my favor... greatly. If an employee can work their hardest and fastest for one year straight on minimum wage, then I will definitely compensate them appropriately. It's only happened once though and he ended up leaving a month after he got his bonus, lol. He's still unemployed.

can i just say though that this isnt the first time you've had employees who are slow. there's something else unsaid that's gotta be going on because not only was the service very slow the one time we went but you didn't really seem to care either. maybe it's because you knew we were only there from out of town but the best surviving businesses often do so because of repeat business and I'm not sure how you hold onto the customers you do get with all your worker troubles

it's possible you're not preparing your workers for what they may consider "extraneous" parts to the job, like cleaning up or working faster when it's clearly busy and that is just as much your fault as theirs

just to err on the side of caution for the next worker you get you should make the job sounds as hard as reasonably possible and let them know that it's a shitty minimum wage job to boot, if they enjoy it then that's seen as a benefit to them and not a right but they'll know they're expected to pick the pace up and keep it up as they get on

just my two cents, i do hope you all the best always have

Why would you come to my place and not tell me who you are or where you're from at any point in our conversation? Why would you wait for this thread to mention that you've been here?

Im not going to read everything past where I put that this thread pisses me off, but I get the impression that you still have a lot of skills to develop when it comes to managing people effectively.

You should think about the performance of your team as being a direct reflection of your performance as a manager.

They deserve to own thier successes, and you need to own thier failures.

That amount of counterexamples that exist are insignificant and can be dropped off the value of the number. Remember, the range we're talking about is {all successful business owners, not
(failed business owners), not (successful once but currently failed business owners)}

I can't be wrong. It's the definition of successful.
