I dig straight down all the time, I just don't carry anything of value while I do it. Just some ladders, torches, and pickaxes so if I drop myself into a lava pit I haven't lost anything.

but this game is awesome, and well worth the $12.

^^true, it does happens sometimes. I find that danger to be exciting though. I'm kind of pissed (with the new version of water dynamics) you can no longer flood your mine.

I was PISSED when this happened to me.

Pretty sure what happened is....you suffocated. The minecart raises you up a bit, so you need a higher ceiling than normal not to die. Not sure about the boat.

ive always like the crafting systems in MMORPGs and would gravitate towards games that would give you equitable XP and levels compared to hunting

so ill probably give this a shot

I like Harvest Moon type games also

I can't stop playing. Is anyone running a MP server? If not, I may set one up tonight but it won't be up 24/7.

I've dug deep enough that this describes most of the caverns I run into.

For this reason, I carry a full bucket of water with me at all times. Works wonders.

Also, last friday's patch added the ability to crouch while holding the shift key. I don't think it lets you go under things any easier, but it does keep you from crushing your farm plants when you walk on them, and crouching also makes it a little bit harder to accidentally fall down a hole.

I just died because I used my pickaxe to break a block that had a bunch of skeleton arrows stuck in it and they fell on me, doing damage equivalent to being shot by each arrow.

The server is still down. I was planning on trying this out. Any way to play the Alpha? I guess I have to wait for it to be back up before I can buy it.

for those with no sound, download this: http://www.mediafire.com/?7fuzm76qlfahb2k

stick it in your minecraft's appdata folder (run %appdata%)
XP: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\.minecraft\
Vista/7: C:\Users\Username\appdata\roaming\.minecraft\

reason: minecraft doesn't download the resources folder for some reason. it should be a quick fix.

The dude has made millions by selling the game's alpha build at half price, without using any advertising. It's been entirely from positive word-of-mouth/word-of-reviews of people who have gotten addicted to it and enjoy being addicted to it.

So yeah, it's fun. And you'd be surprised just how realistic it feels despite being made entirely of low-res cubes.

Read these, they're seriously a good insight into the game and what makes it great:

This game is awesome.

I just found a hollowed out room about 30/40 blocks down in my mineshaft with one of those burning crates inside it and tqo storage boxes with things random items in them. String, a bucket a few other things I hadn't come across in the world yet.

I dug my mine so deep that I came to the ends of the earth, thought it was water, stepped out, and feel off the planet.

Are there any blocks that CANT be broken, ala, blackish blocks that look like flint ore?

^Bedrock cannot be broken: http://minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Bedrock

I have no idea why he didn't just make the last layer solid bedrock, but it too is random so you can fall through in some places.

I love how your primary food choices in this game are pork vs bread. It's like an allegory for the history of agriculture and civilization.

On the one hand, bread makes my character frail (only heals 2.5 hearts vs 4 for grilled pork).

On the other hand, with farming I don't have to spend all my time hunting. It frees me up to create specialized tools and to build.

operation: BEACH FORTRESS is underway. my spawn base has been converted into a fortified borehole operation to supply the raw cobblestone necessary to construct my epic castle. i will be digging out the sand underneath the glass castle to surround and submerge it in water.

There's a fairly easy way to get an unlimited amount of cobblestone with a bucket of water and a bucket of lava. There are bunches of how-to videos on Youtube.

goal #1 in survival is to build a shelter, no matter how simple. also, gather wood and coal if you can find it the first day. then hide like a little girl until dawn.

^^this is probably your best resource: http://minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Crafting

There is an early, buggy multiplayer version of alpha. I think most of us on here our probably describing our single player experiences though. Listen to this man ^. With enough wood and starter coal you have everything you need to start constructing your own mineshaft. You can quickly go up the "tech tree"

wooden pickaxe -> stone pickaxe -> iron pickaxe -> diamond pickaxe

once you have a diamond pickaxe, you have won the game 190%

So the basic goal is to mine? And to mine you need better tools? And you can't make the better tools without mining those materials? While surviving? I'll check it out tonight.

there are also natural cave systems to explore and get hopelessly lost in. also, a big draw of the game is to build your own castle, block by block.

I have built a fort with cobblestone, with a glass house inside. I built a lighthouse in the ocean just outside of the fort. I am now in the process of making a glass bridge over the ocean to my next outpost. I had 128 blocks of glass in my inventory and I managed to die mining more sand.

I'm reading this and PA's minecraft thread and trying to get excited about paying 13 bucks for an alpha version of a game. Multiplayer survival looks broken at the moment, so is everyone just having fun in single player? Is it really that fun? All the redstone circuitry shit and minecarts work in single player right?

some of the trolling stories in the game are quite interesting.

quoted from reddit comments:

Quote :
"I don't know. Myself and a friend infiltrated a server earlier this year and gained the trust of all of the regulars. At first we built normal houses and other random things. All the while, there were secret installations going in all over the map. Everything we built had a secret basement, concealed below the one open for all to see. Soon a massive underground complex was created with tunnels leading to just about every house on the server. Now, how could tunnels be offensive? An annoyance, yes, but offensive? They were secret NAZI tunnels. Remember how the levels in Wolfenstein 3D look? Yeah, like that but with more Swastikas and things I don't even want to talk about. We built these tunnels and waited for someone to find them. It was almost a week of solid building before another player hit one of the tunnels while building a basement. The reactions from the server regulars were hilarious. Their nice, clean server had been riddled with Nazi tunnels. They were so extensive that the admin tried to do a rollback on the sever, but we had been digging for so long that going to back up without the tunnels would have destroyed massive amounts of work. The best part? We just acted as shocked and offended as everyone else and no one ever suspected us."

Quote :
"The ultimate meta-game. An experiment on social interaction and majority. I was TheLastGunslingers partner in this and we would cast the blame on others who were curious or perhaps even stumbled upon the tunnels. We played it off as if they were the culprit. Because we had gained trust and had the majority (two users against the one we chose to blame), the scapegoat was usually booted. We are horrible people.

This was shortly after we created ovens next to the "Heil Hitler" mural by the way.
"

Quote :
"We began this griefing session, and all others, with a small, brick house with false flooring. you'd build a bed ontop of your tunnel and cover it up with grass. If anyone goes on your house, they have no idea. If you ever play Minecraft, be aware that houses such as these are made by trolls."

Yeah, they work, but I've put easily 10+ hours into this game and still haven't even tested the circuitry and stuff, and I don't really have enough iron to make a very extensive minecart system yet. (well, on second thought, I probably do, but I'd rather use it for armor and tools)

Exploration is more fun, to me, anyway... Just taking a handful of basic supplies with you and setting out to establish a new outpost in unfamiliar territory.

So, I bought it, started a server. I tried to join my own server and I get "not premium user", cannot connect.

Wtf? Last night before I had bought it, I could connect to my own server just fine...

Okay, it's 6:55 pm as I post this - can someone try and update their launcher and confirm that his server is indeed not working, thus everyone is playing in Offline mode right now?

Server problems, he made it so that the resources don't get downloaded. And even if you find them, the game won't even attempt to use sound.

If you really need sound, you should be able to enable it by disconnecting from the internet and playing in offline mode. Probably. Worked for me, at least.

I can't, for the life of me, figure out why this game runs like shit on my Mac mini. It runs fine on my Macbook, but the mini is a year newer, has more RAM, and a better video card. It actually runs great on the mini for like 3-4 minutes then the framerate drops to 1-2 fps. It's not even when I'm moving to new areas when it would be using the cpu for creating new terrain or whatever. If I stop the game, save it, and the restart the game, it goes back to playing perfectly for a couple more minutes and then goes all to shit.

I also have no sound on the mini either, but the macbook is just fine.

This whole situation is making me

Yeah, i was thinking that. overheating is the reason I cannot play the game for more than 15 minutes at a time on my macbook, but I dunno, it's different on the mini somehow. hard to explain exactly. I suppose I could always try to put the mini in front of the AC vent and see if that helps things.

My Mini is not the fastest machine, but I was kind of surprised that it's 100% unplayable on it. We're talking <10 fps. Plays fine on my laptop, though (it's quite a bit faster).
