tipping is my weakness, i always tend to tip too much, but for take out, no.. i agree that if its a mom and pop type place and it's good. i will tip a little for pick up, but at like a chinese place, or papa johns or anything where i go in and pick it up myself with no help, then no.

I believe the point of picking it up is to avoid paying a tip to begin with

On a slightly related note, I hate going out to eat with people who are shitty tippers when you get separate checks.

Cause I don't want to be associated with cheap asses so then I feel like I have to tip way more to make up for it.

if i get like a $12 meal i'll usually tip a dollar or two

got some food the other night with a gift card from a restaurant, and the receipt they gave me just had the remaining balance, no receipt to add a tip and total, and i didnt have cash on me, so no tip

tipping is good though...when i was at State and would go to Waffle House late night, i'd tip Miss Betty well, and also tip the line cooks a few bucks...once they knew me, i could go in at 3am on a Friday when it was packed and i'd get the table ahead of people who had been waiting for 15 minutes

This.

I got take out from some crappy kabob place for lunch today and the woman got pissy with me for not leaving a tip. I don't tip for just throwing my food in a bag and ringing me up unless I personally know you, bitch. Won't be going back to that place.

If it's standard take out then no I don't usually tip, if it's a bartender that puts the order together then yes I do tip.

If it's a place that typically does take out business (or has "express" or similar in the name), I don't tip. If I go to a restaurant that does primarily sit-down business, I will. I also tip for places that I frequent.

people who tip too much are worse than people who don''t tip at all. quit trying to be important, look like a baller of feel good about yourself by giving someone too much money to do a simple job. people with tip jobs make so much more money than they should make anyway because of over tipping then they complain when a poor tip ruins their 500 dollar night. I remember delivering pizzas and feeling bad when someone ordered a 10 dollar pizza and gave a 5 dollar tip. wtf?

Also i drove an expensive car and people who commented on the car always gave much higher tips. Strange.

Maybe for your cheap ass. Most people do it because they want the convenience of eating at their house without cooking.

And yeah...I tip on carry out. Usually 10%. At a lot of restaurants, the expos get tipped out a percentage of food sales. So the bartender or server who took your to go order has to take a percentage of that food you ordered an tip out the expo. So not tipping them is basically taking money away from them. And if they don't have an expo, it takes time out of their service to (1) take your order, (2) put your order together, and (3) ring you up. That's takes time away from them serving other people who do tip them.

So yeah...at the very least, give them a couple bucks.

I usually leave a race program with a horse circled. Then I give them a wink and a smile. They get excited they may hit it big and I'm out of there before they figure it out.

I tip about 10% on carry out, or a dollar or two. Just something to say, "Hey, I didn't eat here but here's a little something to show you I appreciate you still had to take my order and check on the food in the kitchen and probably prep the to-go bag and get my a drink but anyway here's a dollar."

As someone who used to hostess and make tips off take out that I had to split with the chefs, I can say I never felt that way about people who didn't tip on take out. I always viewed any tips from the night as bonus cash. But it was nice having people like you come in and tip me too much money for throwing food and condiments in a bag lol.

^thank you realism. that shit never comes from people in the industry, they always bitch lol. You spent 10 seconds max pressing 5 buttons on a computer and then dragged a bag out of the kitchen. The kitchen staff did 95% of the work. Then again 10% of like a $14 takeout order of food for a couple people is nothing really lol.

I think people don't do it because they consider 90% of the work to be delivery if they were going to get something delivered.

Yeah I'd say an average night I made about $15. Lucky nights around $30. If not getting that much money is financially breaking you, it's time to find another line of work.

Sorry you worked at a shitty restaurant.

Last place I bartended at, we constantly got our asses handed to us on the weekends. In the middle of a busy dinner shift someone calls for a take-out order for a family of 6. Sometimes they know exactly they want, sometimes they want to know how much to get for three kids and two adults, how they want their meat cooked, substitute sides, etc. While I'm taking this order, tickets from the service bar are making a line and hitting the floor and I've got customers waiting at the bar. And that's just taking the order.

So yeah...10% is about what it's worth. For really big orders we would just hand the tip over to the kitchen because they had to kick it into extra gear to make a catering order for 20 people at 8 o'clock on a Friday night when the restaurant is full. And I'm not saying I expect a tip on every take-out order. You don't have to tip on a $10 burger or a $25 dinner for two. It's appreciative, but I'm not going to get mad. But most everything $50 and up, I'm probably expecting at least a $5 or a 10%.

So yeah...I'd still slide you a buck for handing me my take-out order at Red Robin. But I still tip about 10-15% on takeout at the restaurants down here (depending on where it is and whether or not I know the hostess or bartender who took my order).

Quote :

$14 for a couple people?? McDonald's is not take-out...it's fast food. I keep forgetting who I'm talking to in these threads.

Nothing about my post would tell you what type of restaurant it was

I had to deal with the take out rush at the same time as the dinner rush as well. That's called doing your job. I was already getting paid above minimum wage so any tips were icing on the cake. If I wanted to be making money from tips I'd have been a waitress.

Hostesses don't count. Besides the manager, you guys have the easiest job in the whole restaurant.

Yeah dealing with pissy customers, pissy waitresses, pissy managers, pissy kitchen staff, and bussing tables all night is so much fun lol. And really, you think managers have an easy job? Unless they suck at their job they're the ones making sure everyone else there has a job. That sort of pissing match, "My job sucks so much more than your job," that goes on in the food industry is one of the reasons I'm glad I don't work in it anyone. Bunch of melodramatic drama queens that make careers out of it.

If I had to choose, I'd say the dishwasher has the shittiest job in a restaurant.

I had this thread bumped because I was wondering about places like Moes. Anyone tip there? They get hourly pay >= minimum wage, so I'm not expecting anyone to say 20% or anything, but a couple bucks?

Fuck places that ask for tips that don't provide waiting services. Fuck you. I'm looking at you, Chinese take-out, Cold Stone, Moes, etc. Tips are for providing reward to those who have fully serviced you throughout an entire meal and done so beyond and above the call of duty. Not for some high school schmuck in the taco assembly line who just throws disproportionate amounts of fillings into a shell and then slings it up on the counter. What the fuck have you done? Not a damn thing but plate my food. I don't tip the chef at Ruth's for plating my food, now why the fuck are you special? You want a tip? Then don't have me stand there to wait for you to make my meal, don't have me carry my meal, don't have me fill or refill my own drink, come by to check on me at the table, etc. Fucks asking for tips without providing tip worthy services. Fuck you. I'm even talking to you, pizza delivery boy. Why in the hell am I tipping you, other than that you get paid jack shit and society demands that I make it up to you. Fuck that. You just brought me food, good for fucking you. I don't tip the food runner at McDonald's, why the fuck are you getting tips? Tell the bossman to pay you, not me. You're not sitting around while I eat, refilling my plate, getting me more soda. Tips aren't required anywhere. Tips are for showing appreciation to a server for going above and beyond, not their base income. You expect a tip from me? Then fucking earn it.

Nobody asking the question about tipping for carry-out specified what type of restaurant it was.

Yeah...a couple bucks is fine.

People are freaking out like I said to over tip on carry-out. All I've said is a buck or two on a small order and 10% on very large orders.

RAWR RAWR RAWR...HERE'S COME WDICKPRICE3....RAWR RAWR RAWR. You should tip for people having to serve your fat-ass.

If you are expected to tip at Moe's where wouldn't you be expected to tip? They slap the food together your own way at Burger King as well.

This tip thing is getting ridiculous.
