Durr. Don't know how I missed this on the other page. But I'll repost it for page 2 since I "found" it myself tonight.

http://forum.firecore.com/topic/4109

It gives instructions on how to get practically all the websites with streaming content (Hulu, CBS.com, Spike, The Daily Show, SP Studios, etc) working on XBMC without having to use an external conversion server like PlayOn.

I just tried it out and it works beautifully. Even has the subtitles for all the shows on Hulu.

Also I just found out that an Orb server (free) just shows up as a source in XBMC (and PS3 for that matter). If you have a TV Tuner in your computer you can watch Live TV on your Apple TV. Also if your ISP supports it you can get ESPN3 as well.

This thing just keeps getting better and better.

Ok ESPN3 on ATV2, that's what I've been waiting for. Going to jailbreak tonight and install Firecore.

So the process would be:

1) Jailbreak (looking at Greenpois0n for this...any reason to use something else)
2) Install XMBC
3) Install Orb server on desktop PC
4) Install various plugins via SSH
5) Rock n roll

Correct?

Step 4 isn't necessary if all you're trying to do is espn3. For hulu there are some plugins needed.

Also, if you have a Mac, I'd recommend seas0npass instead of greenpois0n just because the interface is so much nicer. I jailbroke before seas0npass had been updated and gp gave me some fits trying to get into dfu mode. The onscreen prompts never worked right for me.

Wife has a Macbook, might try the JB with that and seas0npass then. I'll probably install Hulu and some other plugins just for fun.

Looks like hulu doesn't work anymore and the guy that got it working in the first place seems to think it is probably a lost cause.

limelight is using an unsupported handshake.http://lists.mplayerhq.hu/pipermail/...ry/001295.html
level3 is sending stop commands to the client prematurely to cut off the stream.

So it lasted much much longer then I thought it would. I am not going to work on the hulu plug-in anymore, If librtmp starts supporting more of these new rtmp features then I will resume work.

It is probably possible fix level3 because it seems it is just some parameter we aren't including("sessionid") so it sends a stop to the client. Again this is just short term because they could start using anything unsupported in librtmp to completely shut it down.

I also wanted to add that some of you guys might still be functional for some content but it won't last. The server you use is dependent on your geographic region and dns server. Once all the CDN servers get upgraded then it will end."

Yeah I remember that excitement. Waiting for it to come so I could finally jailbreak it... and then it turned out I had ordered a miniusb instead of microusb. I tried to find a quick one on craigslist then just drove to cary and borrowed my dads.

Well that was relatively painless. Only hangup in the entire process was when I was screwing around with add-ons in XBMC and the Flickr add-on wants you to authorize through the built in browser. It got some kind of weird error and I couldn't exit out of the browser with the limited remote functionality of the ATV so I just rebooted through putty.

Just verified ESPN3 is working when using Orb. What is incredible is that it pulls every single replay from what seems like forever. I started streaming an EPL game from back in September! None of that shows up on ESPN3.com. I hate having to run such a memory hog on my desktop but then again what else am I going to do most of the time with 8GB of RAM?

So how do you add repositories to download more add-ons than those found through XBMC.com? I checked the add-ons on their wiki and there are at least twice as many listed there as in the add-on menu within XBMC. nm found it with some searching...

I like the power of XBMC but I can already tell it's waaay too much for my wife to be interested in. The firecore aTVFlash looks like it might be a better option for ease of use, but for now I'm going to stick with whatever gets me watching ESPN3 on my TV. If I could find the HGTV add-on (or especially TLC) then I think she would convert and be a fan

Hulu kind of worked for me last night. I was able to browse any list of shows I pulled up and started streaming an episode of The Simpsons with no problems. However when I realized I had already seen that one and picked another, it wouldn't load the stream. Not sure what the issue was, is just didn't load.

Also installed The Daily Show add-on. Streamed the 2/28 episode in hi-def without issue. I know aaronburro is trolling in all the Apple threads about half the features, twice the price. All I know is that I dropped $99 (actually $0 out of pocket, used gift cards from Christmas to buy it) on a box slightly bigger than my wallet that has made cable TV totally irrelevant.

It certainly is a great device. Trying to get it all set up now with newsgroups to basically function as a DVR. Also trying to find a good skin for XBMC, like ^ I need something simple if I want to keep the fiance interested in it.

And while I know there are other alternatives for the ATV2, it really is rather cheap (I got mine as an xmas present, but I wouldnt mind buying one myself) and while it requires jailbreaking to get some abilities that come stock with other similar devices I think the future support on the ATV2 will far exceed other products.

Using XBMC with the Ellipse skin. I love this, I tried like 5 different skins and this one seems to be the smoothest. I have sickbeard and SABNzbd set up to DVR all my shows, send them to the right directory and XBMC automatically updates. This thing is far exceeding my expectations with the ease of use and what you can do with it.

Ok so check this out. I love ESPN3 but they don't carry nearly as many EPL games as Fox Soccer. So I found this article:

http://greg.mcmull.in/how-watch-sopcast-through-orb-your-iphone-or-ipod-touch

Have Orb running on your desktop. Install SopCast and launch the stream you want to watch on the AppleTV.

Right click Orb in task bar
Click Control Panel
Pick Webcam
Click +
Add http://127.0.0.1:8902/stream as the server, SopCast as the name

Then when you go back to your TV, go to Orb and you'll see SopCast as a source under Webcams. Click on it and it will stream whatever channel you have running on your desktop.

There are tons and tons of SopCast channels out there (of varying quality...ie http://www.livefootballtvs.com/sopcast-channel-list.html). Hope this helps someone!

I'm really hoping someone finds a way to get all the NCAA games streaming. I at least have access to CBS HD through basic cable but it would be nice to have all the other games.

Also - provided there is an NFL season I would love to see a way to get Redzone streaming.

I don't see how it could. Playon converts the picture on your pc to a video stream that is then sent to the ATV. As long as you can watch hulu on your computer, playon should be able to convert it.

Apple started resigning the 4.1 (iOS 4.2.1) firmware again recently. If anybody's bought a newer ATV with 4.2 preinstalled or accidentally upgraded without backing up the SHSH blobs, it's now possible to back them up and/or downgrade. XBMC doesn't play nicely with 4.2 at the moment.

Was The Daily Show plugin basically pulling streams from Hulu? Because neither seem to work anymore.

Getting SopCast to work was definitely the best thing I've done with it so far. Great to be able to watch basically any EPL game I can find online on my TV instead of my PC.

Thinking about trying something besides XBMC now. ESPN3 picture quality is usually not that great and now the ATV is restarting after about 10 minutes of streaming anything from SopCast.

Whats the best forum to keep up with for progress on more ATV2 hacks? I follow the guys at XBMC a lot for skins and things of that nature, but wondering for non-xbmc type hacks.

Also - El Nacho, I'm pretty positive you have an ipad as well (mines arriving in a few days)... are there ways of using the ipad as a remote to control XBMC on the atv2?

appletvhacks.net i think?

I'm pretty happy with xbmc on my appletv2. Good stuff. streaming via upnp from my bedroom pc.

I wish we would get more 3rd party app development though. I'm expecting to get an ipad someday and got the atv mainly for its connectivity to iphones/etc.

Yeah I definitely love XBMC. I've finally got around to getting all my music set up on it, we recently moved to a house with a big backyard so we will be hosting lots of parties/cookouts so it will be nice to have an easy streaming option.

Our ipad just arrived in the mail today as well, I plan on using XBMC commander, it looks really nice and from what I've heard works well.

In regards to XBMC - what skins are you guys using?

I'm currently using "Night". I'm using the logo view with extra fan art, it looks great although it does have occasional issues with lag.

There are at least 3 apps in the app store designed to allow you to control ANY XBMC install via the web interface. I tried out all three and could only get play/pause to work on 1/3 but fast forward/rewind and the other functions didn't work. I dunno if I just didn't configure something properly or if that's still something that needs more work on the iOS version of XBMC or what. I never messed with it too much cause I just use my Harmony remote anyway. In theory it's possible, I just don't know for sure what setup works best.

Ideally I'd more like to use it for the ability to switch music from any room in the house. From what I can tell with xbmc commander it has the capability to browse your library and select whatever you want to play. I'll still use my normal remote when sitting in front of the TV.

So laying in bed playing with the Ipad last night trying different apps - I decided to check out the free XBMC remote app called Soulmote. It has a tiny ad at the bottom but its pretty awesome, I wanted to see if it would work and clicked on one song, instantly I heard the music fire up from the other room.

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/09/16/360idev-getting-ready-for-apps-on-the-apple-tv/

Quote :
"Developer Michael Gile took the stage at 360iDev in Denver to talk about the next generation of iOS development: Apple TV app development. Apple hasn't officially released or even announced iOS apps on the Apple TV yet, but that hasn't stopped Gile and a community of jailbreakers from diving in and getting code running on it anyway. Gile started his speech with a prediction: "Apple TV 2 will be the biggest game console in history," he said. If Apple implements a way to play iOS games on the device directly, it'll have a gigantic game library -- it's already larger than many of the biggest consoles in history combined.

Gile said he believes there's still space to conquer in the living room. Xbox, Netflix, and Roku have all made bids for setting up "set-top boxes." No one has brought about the kind of "grand strategy" that Apple likes, with a complete vertical solution for selling hardware, software, and entertainment content (through iTunes, and its install base complete with credit cards ready for purchase).

The rest of Gile's talk was mostly demos of the code he's already gotten running on the Apple TV. He started off with the GLTeapot, a traditional "Hello World" kind of demo used for 3D developers. He then dived into the code, showing off the interface Apple has already included on the Apple TV system (though none of it is yet officially documented or available to developers -- this is all internal code used by the company to run the device). While iOS uses the UIKit framework to run most of its code, the Apple TV uses a "BackRow" (or "BR") framework, apparently a twist on the "FrontRow" application that originated back in the days of Apple's "experiment." This "BRKit" does have lots of the standard UIKit ties, though Gile pointed out there are still quite a few differences in both names and functionality.

Still, he and the rest of the jailbreak community have gotten quite a bit done already. Gile showed off a navigation app similar to Apple's own app, though hooked up to his own applications. He was able to load up and play media assets (in this case, a trailer for Sony's Spider-Man movie), and he ran through a few other demos and functions of what the code was capable of.

But perhaps the most exciting parts of Gile's talk were two things he wasn't able to show off just yet. He says he's grabbed the recently released source code for id games' Wolfenstein 3D and Quake and has been working hard on porting it over to the Apple TV's system, with a nice bit of success so far. Gile also announced that next month he'll be releasing a version of the popular cocos2D iOS development platform that will also work with the Apple TV, essentially making it very easy for cocos2D developers to get their games up and running on Apple TV without issue.

Gile was quite enthusiastic about Apple TV development. He made it very clear he thinks Apple is going to go big on this iOS device in the living room, and he was quite serious about building apps for the platform in order to have them running and ready to go on day one. "I want to be the Trism of Apple TV 2," he said (referring to the original jailbreak game that made it big when the App Store first launched), and he invited any other interested developers in the room to join him in his quest.

It's still unclear just how Apple will approach iOS development on the Apple TV, whether it will simply extend the current SDK the way it did with the iPad or instead offer up an entirely new way to control and code apps and games. But whatever Apple decides, it's clear Gile wants to be ready for it."

I'm actually really surprised that it took this long for any notable apps (XBMC aside) to come out for the ATV2. I would have thought, at the very least, that we would have seen some emulators by now. Looks like there is tons of stuff right around the corner, however.

I don't believe, for one second, that it will be the biggest gaming console ever though. Maaaaybe, if Apple gets serious about it, and releases a beefier version with more storage space it might be taken more seriously.
