awesome thanks I was about to ask for more opinions

I think i'm checking out #2 tonight. guy is asking $500 for it and says it's 2 years old. he says its in 8.5/10 condition. glass is good, couple of small marks on the bank, but didn't mention the bezel. comes with all the boxes/documentation, but no receipt as it was a gift (supposedly purchased from Carlyle and company in Crabtree).

does that price sound good?
also does the documentation usually have the serial # on it?

$500 sounds like a decent deal. The serial number should be on the paperwork or warranty card. Make sure the serial number on there matches with the one on the watch.

One quick way to verify authenticity is to call the dealer where it was originally purchased and match the watch to their sales database. If the guy is the original owner he should be able to tell you where he bought it. Call them and tell them that you're purchasing the watch and you'd like to confirm authenticity. Most jewelers will be able to search by serial number and verify that they sold that watch. It's going to be highly unlikely that the guy bought a legit watch and then somehow found/created a replica with the same serial number.

^ Have him meet you at a Tag dealer if you're not sure how to spot a fake. There are tons of them out there. Call beforehand to find out if they can verify authenticity, but I'm pretty sure most will gladly do it.

You could always look at the watch in person first and make him an offer contingent on him meeting you at the jeweler the next day to verify authenticity. That way he knows you're not wasting his time.

Glad you went with number two, it's a great looking piece. The black numbers on the outermost bezel really make it pop. Also, the day/date display. I'm not a fan of monotone watches with little contrast.

it isn't the rubber strap so much as the hardware. My rubber strap is only like 90, but the deployment clasp is like 240.

The breitling rubber racer strap looks great and is of great quality. After market is ok, I use aftermarket for exotic leathers...like ostrich.

I have a few Wolf Design ones. These are single winders that wind in both directions and have periods of rest. None of mine have storage in the top. These can be a little pricey.

i recommend against watches anymore. ppl use cellphone or some other such device. wrist watch is the new pocket watch/ engagement ring: old fashioned and pointless. it doesnt say "look I so fashionable, I only jewelery is my expensive watch" it says " I conforming to tired old fashion because I don't know any better"

meh. i used to be one of the cellphone crowd but it's much easier to check a wrist watch than a electronic device in your pocket.

^^^are you serious? It's much easier to look down at your wrist then dig in your pocket for your phone. It's tacky looking at your phone all the time. Plus a nice wrist watch is by no means going out of style. Especially if its got practical uses as a dive watch or when you don't have a cell phone.

Hell it's a great deal even if it breaks.

I purchased a few for friends.

The only thing I would be concerned about is the warranty (since it is not listed in the product description). {2yr warranty on FAQ page}

They are still making a profit and you are getting a bit more reasonably priced device.

I have a slightly beat-up Timex Ironman, about 2.5 years old. I think it cost ~$35 at Target.

It seems to be precise and accurate. It is functional and isn't a piece of jewelry.

It tells me the time and date, can be used as a stopwatch, a countdown timer, and an alarm clock.

It also allows me to keep track of time in another timezone (useful when you have family in Hawaii or if you're traveling and need to call the office).

It is water-resistant to 200-meters, so it works nicely when I'm diving. The stopwatch and lap/split functionality is nice for timing deco stops if necessary.



Perhaps it is just me, but I can't see spending more than $200 on a nice watch. I understand having one that looks nice as an accessory in a business or formal situation, but...some of these prices are ridiculous. $800? $1,500? $13,000? $95,000? $1-million+?!??

I appreciate the really expensive watches with the intricate mechanisms as pieces of art blended with finely crafted mechanics, but who the hell spends $13,000 on a watch? Someone with more money than brains, that's who.

I suppose everyone has things they splurge on...more power to you.

It's like anything else that is nice. Shoes, clothes, suits, cars, anything. Sure you can get by with the cheapest but some people enjoy luxury items. I don't see it as any different than spending lots of money on a pair of shoes when a cheaper pair would functionally work just as well.

Define 'Functionally work'.... My cheap shoes hurt like a Motha... my nice ones don't even need a break in spell.....

I know people who own 50 pairs of $19-$69 shoes but refuse to pay $300 for a 'good' pair.... while $1,700 conservatively sits in their closet unworn because they hurt.

Does not compute.

Recommend a decent chrono watch in the $300-400 range. I'm looking for something I can wear everyday dress casual as well as out. I wear a watch 24/7, I just want to jump back up from this Fossil that's about to fall apart.

I'm thinking something by Citizen or the like is my best bet.

I like that Citizen the best. I just got a gun metal Victorinox and I love it. I think a Citizen Eco-Drive will be my next purchase.

question: does anyone on here actually engage in any sort of watchmaking, or do you all just buy $300 watches at the mall?

it's something i'm trying to get into, and would appreciate any guidance. i realize there are abundant forums about this about the interwebs, but someone i more or less e-know from tww would be neat.

I think most of us are above buying ridiculously marked up watches at a premium at the mall. I wish I had time to mess around with installing movements. Right now I'd rather just buy nice ones and let other people worry about the innards.
