Utah cops warrantlessly search prescription drug records of 480 emergency personnel
When searching for morphine thief, Utah cops have almost carte blanche powers to search database.

"If we took "Federal Government" as the land owner in this example and replaced it with "private land-owning citizen", would all the militias have driven out? It would just be a case of one guy letting his cows graze on another guy's property. If "private land-owning citizen" got pissed and started seizing Bundy's cows, no one would have given a shit except Bundy, and he would still been in the wrong."

To be fair, there is a big difference between the gov't taking somebody's shit and a random citizen doing it. Not that Bundy has any leg to stand on, because he doesn't, but still... I understand the outrage, and part of it feels bad to me, but once you look at the actual facts, you see that this guy and his family have essentially been squatters for a hundred years

From what I've read is the government lets ranchers graze their cattle for cheap on government owned land. He wasn't squatting but renting. The landlord (government) told the tenant (rancher) to leave. He said no and stopped paying rent.

It's pretty much the most insane eviction case ever. If he was Hispanic no one would give two fucks.

^^ doesn't the law often give squatters rights after some amount of years?

None of the articles I've read have gone into any detail on what's been wrong though.

I just saw he stopped pAying some fee in 1993 for some unreported reason, then just recently after court battles, the gov starts seizing cattle, then a bunch of Republicans bring guns and threaten to shoot their fellow Americans because the guy didn't want to pay his bills.

Because he has money it sounds better but these guys essentially are fighting over a guy who stopped paying rent.

Also his cows are essentially grazing on the equivalent of public housing.

This whole thing gives me a headache.

we will see another standoff at Red River, the libertarians and gun nuts are already masturbating about it on the internet. If its not already on Fox News it will be soon.

While the BLM is involved in both disputes, the stuff in Nevada is completely different than what's happening on the Red River.

Strangely though, the derp from the far right sounds the same so.... yeah.

oh yeah, i didn't mean to imply they were the same. i'm not informed about red river and only know their claims, but their side is at least much more understandable in this situation. I really don't know anything about where it stands in courts, but I do know that as soon as a thousand armed people get involved that reason is out the door.

"Just days after the U.S. Department of Justice announced the results of an investigation into the Albuquerque Police Department, three members of the Police Oversight Commission are quitting.

In their resignation letters to Mayor Richard Berry, Richard Shine, Jennifer Barela and Jonathan Siegel said they’re resigning because the civilian commission has no teeth.

“The city attorney’s office addressed the POC on April 10, 2014, and stated that we have no power to decide against the APD Chief or against the independent review officer’s findings regarding citizens’ complaints,” reads Siegel’s letter. “I cannot continue to pretend or deceive the members of our community into believing that our city has any real civilian oversight.”

I've heard rumblings that in 1998, the BLM sold grazing rights to the county, so if they are there to collect grazing rights, then they are only there to collect them prior to 1998. Bundy has stated that he's willing to pay the county their share.

I say rumblings because I haven't seen the actual text, just heard of it. I think lawyers on both sides are digging, and Bundy's side found this, bug again I haven't seen it, so I can't offer a citation.

Fact-checking update on the Bundy situation in Nevada: http://www.8newsnow.com/story/25302186/an-abbreviated-look-at-rancher-cliven-bundys-family-history

tl;dr: The "ancestral water rights" he claims go back to the 1800s are full of shit. The farm he currently lives on was bought by his parents on January 5th, 1948. The side of his family that Bundy claims the water rights are from, actually lived in Utah at the turn of the century.

"A Philadelphia plainclothes narcotics squad had barreled into the immigrants' bodegas, guns drawn. They had cut the wires on the stores' video surveillance systems, robbed thousands of dollars from the cash drawers, stolen food and merchandise and then trashed the shops on their way out the door.

One bodega owner even had footage of the cops cutting the video wires.

...

Instead, the offending officers, who've been on desk duty since Laker and Ruderman wrote about them in 2009, will likely get back their jobs, their guns and the chilling entitlement that allowed them to turn the bodega owners' American dream into an American outrage.

Quote :
"Corrupt cops on the Santa Clara police force planted drugs in the home of Allison Ross, after they ransacked her home and found nothing. To make their transgression worse, they had no search warrant and Ms Ross denied them the right to search.

The incident began at a neighbor’s house where Ms Ross’ husband was arrested on unspecified charges. They then made their way to the Ross house, where they tore the house apart looking for methamphetamine. The search turned up no drugs and the cops went outside to discuss the situation. It was there they decided to plant two bags of the drugs in the house. The plan might have worked, had they not made them in front of the dash cam. It recorded their entire conversation.

They arrested Ms Ross for being under the influence of methamphetamine, but the D.A. tossed the charges because it was discovered that the cops had lied about the arrest. The question is, if they know the cops lied, why didn’t any of them face charges? Ms Ross is now suing along with her husband for false arrest, false imprisonment, malicious prosecution, negligent hiring and conspiracy.

Radley Balco of the Washington Post observed:

The suit also brings up two other questions: If the district attorney’s office dismissed the charges due to false statements, why haven’t the people who made those false statements been prosecuted for perjury? And why are these particular police officers still on the job?"

another day another cop needlessly shooting a dog.

i'm pretty astonished that killing a dog hasn't gotten any owners killed by the cops yet, i can imagine a lot of people would start acting irrationally after seeing their dog shot.

^^^You and I use the word proof differently.

I'm immediately skeptical of her story if her claim is that the bruising in that picture was from a simple grope from behind. It's much more plausible that injury was from when she was being detained after she elbowed the cop in the face.

What happened before that point is not clear. But who wants to make an informed opinion when there's shit talking about police to be had?

(to be fair I typed this post up an hour ago but went to lunch. )

^from that article:
Quote :
"There are more people behind bars today for a drug offense than there were in 1980 for all offenses combined. A first-time drug offense carries a sentence of 5-10 years, though the vast majority of those arrested are not charged with serious offenses. In 2005, for example, 4 out of 5 drug arrests were for possession, not sales. "
