I'll take some actual 'coaching' over potentially losing solid recruiting (his only strength) at this point. But hopefully we can get coaching and recruiting combined.

Gottfried did his job. Our program was in trouble and he made us respectable again. We got there, but it's clear there's a cap on what he's capable of and his flaws as a coach are apparent and exploitable. It's time to move on with no hard feelings - dude will get a golden parachute so no one should be sad about it.

Let the season play out and see if Gott can manage to do anything with this team. Obviously we've hit rock bottom so nowhere to go but up. It is definitely sad that we are staring at a Sidney Lowe type season in year 6 with a deep and talented team.

For the first year, I just don't get why we're bad.

Most years I can name a specific reason: lack of talent, lack of depth, lack of hustle, too inexperienced, lack of shooters or athletes. This team has all those things yet still underwhelms. They're young at PG, sure, but the talent should make up for it.

I guess it comes down to a lack of fundamentals overall and an offensive system not suited to our personal. That's all on the coach.

Still time to turn it around, but it's looking pretty bleak today

I agree losing to anyone other than the Golden State Warriors by over 50 is unacceptable. Even Sidney Lowe didn't lose this bad. I can't figure out if we run an offense. It used to be the UCLA high low when he first got here, then it was screens to get Warren and Turner the ball, then screens for Turner and iso for Lacey, and last year just let Cat ball out. Does anyone onow what our offense is this year???

When you can read the coach's lips on TV yelling "RUN THE OFFENSE" after yet another shit possession, that about did it for me. No coach, if they don't run the goddamn offense, then you sit their ass and put someone else in. You don't just keep yelling at them. Corch Jr. and company (although who knows if they would run the offense either) losing by 70 is less embarrassing for the fans than losing by 50 with our starters.

Jacking up terrible shots and turning the ball over with sloppy passes has been a season long problem. We won't even talk about the terrible defense which has been a Gott problem since day 1.

BTW, did anyone notice the developmental difference between Meeks and Anya? They both came in as similarly rated players 4 yrs ago. Both were overweight with Meeks a more polished offensive player and Anya a defensive monster. Meeks has slimmed down and looks stronger and is now one of the best big men in the ACC. Anya perhaps has gained weight, is an offensive liability and can't get back fast enough on defense to matter most of the time.

You guys still holding out for a NCAA tournament bid cant be serious. We're an NIT bubble team.

Hell we are the 7th best team in the Carolinas behind Duke, UNC, Wake, UNC-W, Clemson, and South Carolina.

And there are THREE teams from Tennessee right behind us.

MTSU, Tennessee, and East Tennessee St.

This is getting ugly fellas. The acc is tough this year and we are not good

We're mostly still trying to run the high post with one big in the "high post" and another set down low with two wings.



The problem is that Anya and Abu can't pass or drive for shit, so turnovers or bad shots are almost guaranteed when they get the ball in the high post. (Not to mention the fact they both have stone hands). Yurtseven has potential to run the high post effectively, but teams are being aggressive with him and he's not handling it well.

That said -- UNC didn't even let us get into the offense most of the time. They would jump Smith's entry passes to the bigs and take off down court in transition. That's why you saw a million turnovers and general chaos on offense. VT had a lot of success doing that too in the 2nd half, but our lead had gotten too big for it to matter by then.

The one part of the offense that HAS been working is when we run our shooters off baseline screens for open threes. (ie: The Scott Wood play). But UNC was pressing our PGs so much that they rarely made decent passes and Henderson/Mav couldn't get a decent shot off.

IMO -- we should scrap the offense almost entirely and instead go with high ball screens and/or the weave. Smith with Yurt or Mav could potentially be deadly in the pick and roll/pop.

Again, our problem is on defense, not offense. These next 5 games will be the true indicator of how succesful our season will be. If we lose >1 game, things will not look good.

In the meantime, I guess just root for VT to win all their games?

Ok, yes, our offense was bad against UNC-CH. But everything was bad in that game.

In general, our problem is defense (and everything associated with good defense, like rebounding, winning lose balls, intensity, etc.).

Had to make an account so I could vent to some NC State fans instead of my Duke friend, who is the only person I know that follows ACC basketball enough to remotely understand the struggle of being a Pack fan.

Mark Gottfried is officially down to 0 credibility in my book after that abysmal performance yesterday. UNC hasn't faced a team this year or will again (until 2/15) that can play so flat, rattled, and disjointed in that historic beatdown witnessed yesterday. It's so hard for me to understand how a coach that's in his 6th year in this conference didn't see it coming. You have to know your opponent.
Roy Williams, who hates NC State with a passion and was quoted saying he'd "rather beat State than eat", will always (at least try) to have his guys amped and ready to take us to the woodshed until he retires. Gottfried on the other hand, is the worst motivator I've seen.
I didn't hold anything against him in his first year. However, the red flag went up for me when we were blown off the floor by Marcus Smart and Ok. State early in his second year when I believe we were ranked 6th while playing them. The "cool jacket" was definitely on then and it has been Gottfried's MO his entire coaching career if you look back.
He is a solid recruiter, but a serviceable coach at best -- not a good, great, or championship level coach by any means. He doesn't seem to take the regular season seriously and has done just enough late in past seasons to sneak us into the tournament, otherwise he would be gone. He can't win the close games when we aren't playing great, and can only beat quality teams when our players are shooting a very high percentage. If someone can name one game where we came back from a double digit 2nd half (or first half) deficit under Gott and won, I'd like to know. I can think of when we had Duke down by 20 in Cameron at the half and wound up loosing -- that's Gottfried basketball.
This game, like all sports, is more than Xs and Os, there is a major mental toughness side to the game that we have been missing throughout my entire lifetime. We will never win a championship of any kind again until we can get that edge.
When FSU and Miami have won an ACC championship while he's been here I don't see how we can ignore that as fans of a school that still has the 3rd most ACC titles despite not winning one since 89'. Just remember guys, we are paying this loser 2.5 million (more than Roy gets base pay) to do what he did yesterday. We are also ranked 3rd in the conference for paying assistant coaches, only behind Duke and Louisville. Money is not the issue. Stupid, lazy hires are.
We need to fire Debbie Yow for being too incompetent to realize he's a silver tongued, fraud of a coach and for hiring Doeren as well. I'll always be an NC State fan and will still be pulling for the players this year, but Gottfried needs to go. I would love to see what Archie Miller or even a Keatts could do with this program. Obviously Archie would be the perfect fit based on him being a former player with love for the university, his style of play would fit well in the ACC, he's 38 years old, and finally his players play 40 minutes of basketball. In a perfect world we never hire Sidney Lowe (may those days be forgotten by all) and get John Calipari or someone like a Bob Huggins. Both would have awoken this sleeping giant of a program. Last note, has everyone here heard the Lee Fowler / John Calipari pizza story? If not, skip till around the 18 min mark of this podcast. Start it around 11 mins if you want to hear more funny NC State talk.

Totally a sleeping giant of a program, think about all we have:

1 - Uniforms. New coach wouldn't even have to order them.
2 - Basketballs. At least one per player and they are the correct size(although a few women's balls occasionally get mixed in by accident).
3 - A court with our logo on it. And it's not even the logo ECU uses modified, it's actually our team logo.
4 - We play in a conference. Until a few years ago even Notre Dame wasn't in one of those and still can't find one in football.
5 - Scholarships. To go to school. At NC State. 12 of them. #education.
6 - Fan support. See this website. Doesn't get any better.
7 - That Scotty guy goes to the games.
8 - Rack Focus.
9 - Banners, including an Old Spice Championship and some NHL banners they put in there too.
10 - Consistently putting players into the NBA D-League. Many go on to play in Europe.

Just need the right coach, pieces are there.
