i feel like this will change a little bit if they continue to build things like Stanhope Center around the area of Hillsborough Street...

Yeah, there are many reasons beyond NCSU's control why Hillsborough St turned into a shithole. When my pops was there in the 70's they even had a strip club.

I guess I would have GT worse, although there is a shit load of places to go around it, 95% of them would still be there even the campus disappeared tomorrow.

Let's take a place like Clemson for example. I've been there a ton. Nice "traditional campus scene", but I'll be goddamn if I would rather be a Jr or Sr at Clemson than have a region like the Triangle at my disposal.

i preferred living around Tryon/Lake Wheeler mostly because it was very convenient to downtown...like $10 to get a cab ride home with 4 people

^^ ah another great point. i passed through clemson on a road trip and was supremely disappointed w/ it.

i personally live in oakwood in a house w/ one roommate for $450/month. i don't know how much you guys pay/paid to live in the undergrad ghetto, but it can't be a lot less than that. i'm not doing much for the campus scene, but it's great for walking to downtown. i don't know where i'm really going w/ this, except that those huge complexes are miserable and i don't know how anyone lives there.

what's miserable about them? if you're under 21 they're pretty damn solid. walking distance between about 3 of the biggest ones.

putting up with the people that run them may be a pain, but as far as living in one...

just b/c you're under 21 doesn't mean you have to do everything inside an apartment. underage kids can still do things like walk to dinner, walk to campus, walk to get icecream. fuck, i don't know.

The time i've spent in Raleigh has depended a lot on where I lived. In school I lived right off of Hillsborough Street and I really hope that these new apartments and studios they're trying to renovate work out, because that will make a huge difference. Downtown is not that far really, it's a pain to get a cab/driver everywhere but it's really not that bad.

I say it depends on where you live because now I live in 5 points and it's 5 minutes or less to any night life scene in Raleigh and tons of other stuff and that's made a huge difference.

Agreed with Hodge.

As for Raleigh, it's a wonderful place to be. If you have trouble going a few miles downtown for the amazing bars or to Cary or Cameron Village, get more friends and make one DD.

-shrug- how many head coaches make a comment like that about a kid? Jules want to be a coach someday, might as well start acting like it. And yeah, I've heard the rumors that some on the team questioned harrow's toughness. Doesn't matter. Be a statesman, Jules

I can't believe I'm actually getting into the "Raleigh Nightlife" argument, but I'll just say this...

College is about house parties, flip cup, beer pong, themed parties, drinking games, etc. To say NC State sucks because the lack of bars and clubs is kinda ridiculous. Does it help?? Yes. If you don't have it, does it make it a shitty college to have fun at?? No. That's on you. In college, fun is how you make it. Especially at a large university. Sorry Jaybee...but not everyone is an over-sized techno/raver.

My college days in Raleigh were great, multiple parties to choose from every weekend, within walking (hiking) distance. And I have plenty of fun in Raleigh now. New bars/restraunts/activites opening all the time, even in this shitty economy. And Charlotte sucks.

I think for most people, this is what the first two years of college are all about, when you're underage and don't want to deal with the hassle and bullshit of using a fake everytime you go out.

But once you hit 21, when you're ready to experience the whole club and bar scene for the first time, Raleigh really suffers.

I guess I just never had that desire. I was pretty frugal in college and would much rather by beer by the case then only be able to buy a couple at a bar for that same price.

Having said that...it's a shame that Hillsborough Street doesn't have a plethora of college bars that kids want to go to. It would probably help if students didn't live so far away at other apartment complexes (Lineberry area and Kaplan)...but the late night bus routes should help that.

I've had relatives that went to State in the 70s and 80s, and Hillsborough use to be a great place to hang out (although I'm sure the 18 drinking age helped that as well with more students able to walk from the dorms...now everyone moves out after freshmen year).

In my first 2 years at State I've never had a problem finding anything to do on the weekends. If you didn't have fun during college then that's on you.

In terms of the bar scene once you hit 21, NC itself isn't exactly a great place for that, but there are options in downtown Raleigh and I feel like if you have enough $ to spend at a bar, then you have enough to split a cab with some people so it shouldn't be much of an issue.

From all I've heard Hillsborough used to be a great place when the drinking age was 18, but the 21 age and the noise regulations of the neighborhoods in the area have made it tough for things like clubs to open on the street. Hopefully with the new housing developments going up on each end of the street we'll see some new businesses come in to make Hillsborough the type of place to go on weekends because there is a push to make that happen.

I'm another person who actually likes the look of the campus too. And the look of campus should only improve with all of the renovation projects being planned.

I still don't see how this relates to Harrow's decision, but whatever.

/end longass rant/

I look at as an opportunity for my son he gets to play his natural position the two or shooting guard. He never played small foward until he got to State. He usually guarded the two any way on Defense. Remember he played Point in High school, granted it was more of a shooting point guard. He only had 27 turnovers for the entire year so I think we will be OK. Quit picking on Ryan he left because he wants to play in a dribble drive offense. Bottom Line! By the way it is hard to get a Juco into State because of the Academic requirements.

Harrow got a little too butthurt a little too easily. Get those fucking crocodile tears the fuck out of here and man up and grow a set. Just because you're a good recruit doesn't mean you don't have to work hard.

and yeah, I know I said earlier ITT that we should rally around the kid, but damn. I didn't expect him to be such a baby.

Thats part of it. I'm not saying not to do that, but you ALSO go out a lot too. You do both. Problem is, you cant at State near campus.

Quote :
"Sorry Jaybee...but not everyone is an over-sized techno/raver."
That shows the problem, in your mind "people that like to go to clubs=techno/raver" which isnt true at all. Going to clubs is a very very mainstream thing to do at most colleges.

Sure there are homebody types that never leave their place or their friends' place at every campus, but that is usually balanced out by people that actually like to go out too, for some reason at State you only have the homebodies for the most part (except for the occasional bar). I'm not sure why that is... as I said earlier, I have talked to a lot of people that had connections to other schools before coming to State for grad school and/or work and they all said its like pulling teeth to get people to actually go out somewhere.

Anyways, as I said, I think this had 0% to do with Harrow leaving so I am fine with letting it die in this thread.
