Reading that article made me finally want to read this one:

https://medium.com/@octskyward/the-resolution-of-the-bitcoin-experiment-dabb30201f7

I hadn't been paying too much attention to Bitcoin outside of this Craig Wright thing.... it sounds like Bitcoin is proper fucked.

Sure, maybe this will help: A bitcoin is a number made up by a program running on either a bunch of graphics cards a fat nerd bought or a bunch of computers held hostage by Chinese or Russian ransomware. Nerds are willing to exchange actual money, goods, and services for these made-up numbers.

To get these made-up numbers, you steal them from plaintext "wallet" files the nerds store on their computers' desktops. You can hack the nerd's computer, talk your way into the nerd's room, or just roll the nerd in the parking lot.

Are there still people mining bitcoin?

Seems like when the first quantum computer cracks a bitcoin or mines one, the price will drop-- would be a good buying opportunity then.

Is it possible for a normal person to mine them? By normal I mean some guy in his house with a few laptops with extra cycles to spare?

^ short answer is no

People are using ASIC miners now

I think China state actors are a majority of mining activity, I've read but not sure this is still the case.

ha after they bottom out then... hopefully they would implement upgrades to the system to then compensate (if they don't already have these planned).

Is amazing to me that with the revelations of Snowden, and the new CIA leaks, that anyone thinks anything you do with an electronic device is anonymous.

Does the CIA give a shit about Novicane's drug usage?

I think the more important point is that bitcoin isn't anonymous by design.

the mining difficulty adjusts automatically, which is one of the clever things about it

"With the Venezuelan bolivar essentially worthless and supplies rapidly running out, Bitcoin is rising as an answer. According to Bitcoin brokerage Surbitcoin.com, the number of Venezuelan users skyrocketed, from 450 in August 2014 to more than 85,000 in November 2016."

Wonder when it's going to crash back down to like $1000--still 10 times higher than it was you the peanut gallery predicted a crash in like 2013.

Some interesting things that have happened after this thread started:
Bitcoin helped me at work, I implemented a proof of work protocol on a project back in 2013.
The little piddly amount I still had when I was following it is now up by a factor of 10--it's back to real money again.
Coinbase is making > $500,000 a day in transaction fees selling the stuff.
The number of brick and mortar stores that take bitcoin around me comes in around 20
I can even rent planes at the flight school I frequent!
There are a bunch of block chain startups around LA. One does financial trust hardware devices for verifying contracts. Have some big customers too!
My local mall has a bitcoin ATM.

as long as the value keeps rising like it does relative to the USD, why would you ever spend it at a store or on flying lessons?

"The Billion Coin Membership Agreement

The formula begins with a membership agreement. All members of The Billion Coin community agree that this coin will never go down in value; it can only go up in price. This agreement is hinged on a software program that drives the price of TBC up by 1% to 5% daily until it reaches its Ultimate Price."

Started at 0.001 Euro/TBC in March 2016, now worth 36,789 Euros/TBC

A little, made a bank contract and have messed around with some of the development tools for ethereum. It's a pretty impressive tech with some interesting use cases.

The community also seems filled with scammers to even a larger extent than BTC.

A guy here got his coinbase account frozen after he left the country. He'd had the account for years. Took him weeks to get a customer service person.

Beware I guess if you do that. The fork is scary--could be good, could be bad.

So where do you store your BTC? I didn't know about this fork when I placed my order yesterday and the currency is set to arrive in my account on the 1st of Aug. What should I do?
