"Borderlands 2 confirmed

By Brendan Sinclair, GameSpotPosted Aug 3, 2011 8:08 am PT

2K Games and Gearbox acknowledge postapocalyptic shooter sequel in development, planned for release in fiscal year beginning April 2012.

Yesterday, Eurogamer cited a source close to Borderlands 2 for news that the game was in fact in development, with an announcement "soon." That "soon" may as well have been "imminent," as 2K Games and Gearbox today confirmed Borderlands 2 is in the works for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

It's good to know that Breathe Right strips will survive the coming apocalypse.

Set for release during Take-Two Interactive's next fiscal year (April 2012 through March 2013), Borderlands 2 will have new versions of just about everything: character classes, enemies, weapons, equipment, skills, and sections of Pandora to explore. 2K is also touting "an ambitiously crafted story," though the only thing more specific offered was that it will involve secrets being revealed and mysteries being escalated.

More specifics about Borderlands 2 should be revealed soon, with "soon" meaning at Gamescom in Cologne August 17-21, and Penny Arcade Expo, which runs August 26-28 in Seattle, Washington.

For more on the original Borderlands, check out GameSpot's review. "

This game could wind up being nearly identical to the first, and I'd be perfectly happy...

Just fix the few problems the first game had and add more content, and it will be virtually everything I could ever want in a game.

I WILL TAKE MORE OF THE SAME WITH (OR EVEN WITHOUT) SOME THINGS ADDED LIKE MORE CLASS MOD AND GUN MODS. DOESN'T MATTER TO ME, JUST PUT IT ON THE SHELF.

"Borderlands 2 to have improved AI, dynamic missions, new characters

Details on Borderlands 2 are starting to slip out of the latest issue of Game Informer, and according to information gleaned from it, you can expect Claptrap is back in some capacity.

According to what Gematsu read, co-op will still be four-player, the four players from the original game are now NPCs with new bodies for players to take over. One of these is the fella shown in the first bit of art released for the game, Salvador, who is a Gunzerker with the ability to use any two weapons at once.

Story missions will by dynamic at times, and can shape the future of your character. One example given was a rescue mission which changes the course of your destiny if you fail to arrive on time.

A new element called Eridium, has been added as both a currency and to be combined with other elements to improve stats on weapons and vehicles. Weapons from the first game have been ditched for all-new weapons, and can have custom decals and enhancements added to them. Gun manufacturers have been revamped a bit, and will now have their own style and personality. No word on gun crafting was mentioned.

Some pickups will have temporary buffs, like in the General Knoxx expansion for Borderlands 1 and the skill tree in is similar to the original by using the traditional 3-branch system.

Vehicles will also contain more variety, and one shown in Game Informer was called the “Badit Technical,” along with another vehicle with four seats.

Enemies are more varied in form with improved AI, more responsiveness and will interact more with one another. Bandits have access to specific types of weapons.

NPCs have also received improvements as far as moving about the game and conversing with characters in a more interactive manner. The size and scope of the game was also promised to be more epic in scale.

We haven’t received ours in the mail just yet, so when we do, we’ll let you know if there is anything else of note in it.

Borderlands 2 is slated for release during 2K’s FY2013."

They 2013 fiscal year starts in April 2012 which is when the game is rumored to be released, or shortly thereafter.

I'm trying to finish up the main campaign right now (I never finished). Level 31 siren if anyone wants to help. Just got the third vault piece today.

Still, now that I'm getting back into it, I'm definitely pumped about the new one.

I want to play as a claptrap

I think I'm done for the night, but otherwise, I'm mostly wide open. I've been playing in the early afternoon, but I don't go back to work until late August, so I can play whenever. No real responsibilities.

"Gamescom 2011: Borderlands 2 First-Look Preview By Shaun McInnis, GameSpotAug 17, 2011 1:21 pm PT46 commentsGearbox is hardly taking the easy route with its next off-the-wall hybrid of first-person shooter and role-playing game.

FacebookIf Borderlands is an example of how far an original concept and a terrific sense of humor can take a game, then Borderlands 2 is what happens when the developer takes a step back and realizes that those two qualities aren't everything. In fact, listening to Gearbox vice president Steve Gibson, you can't help but feel tempted to remind him that Borderlands was actually a pretty great game. "We had no weapons in Borderlands 2 for about six months while we gutted the weapon system and replaced the whole thing," says Gibson. "But we felt like we could do a lot better. We thought the AI system could be a lot better. We felt like the quest system could be a lot better. We felt like the vehicle system could be a lot better." We're sensing a theme here.

Comment on this videoWatch this video in High Def
Gearbox's laundry list of improvements starts with the gameworld itself. While Pandora was a visually striking place with delightfully absurd inhabitants, the whole place lacked any sort of greater context. Why are you there? Do people actually live in this place apart from those enemies? According to Gibson, "This time around we've actually put the writer of Borderlands in the same room as the lead designer of Borderlands. We're connecting the world and the story and your quests all together now. We're trying to weave a much more intricate tale."

Specifics on said tale are hard to come by right now, but here's hoping it's as endearingly ridiculous as the rest of Borderlands 2. This is a game where one boss fight has you up against a heavily armored enemy who has tied a vulgar midget to the front of his riot shield. This is a game where suicide bomber robots come charging at you with reckless abandon, dragging their torsos around if they were lucky enough to lose only their legs. And did we mention the disposable guns? Instead of reloading them, you just throw the empty ones at your enemies for no other reason than, well, why not? (Even stranger, the next disposable gun just appears in your hand as if out of nowhere.)

Yet it's not all silliness and absurdity. Gearbox promises a wholesale overhaul to the way enemies behave in combat. You'll find enemies who are more keenly aware of their surroundings and chances of survival, jumping up to higher ledges to flank you, dodge out of the way of gunfire, or slink off behind cover and back toward safety when they're critically injured. "Enemies are actually going to work together, call plays, and take more advantage of the environment," says Gibson. At least, the smart ones will do that. The psychos, everyone's favorite raving lunatics from the first game, still operate with a mantra that Gibson describes as, "Wow that's a gun! I want my face in front of it."

Getting around from quest to quest looks to be easier thanks to reworked vehicle physics. Gibson promises that your car of choice will no longer freak out when it clips the slightest rock, reacting more smoothly to bumps along the road while adding more variance to the previously zero-sum game of trying to run over enemies. (It was either you killed them dead, or they stopped your car.) Speaking of navigation, Gibson also boasts that views of the gameworld from high-up vantage points are now "geographically correct" rather than a faked skybox, meaning that you can now spot someplace you'd like to go and simply head in that direction until you get there.

The one quest we were shown served to explain what Gearbox is trying to do differently with some of the mission designs. In this case, you're out to rescue a friend of yours who is being held hostage at the top of a dam by the evil Hyperion corporation. As it turns out, that friend is actually Roland from the first game--there's a new cast of characters, while the original cast return as non-player characters--and he's being held by a floaty jet engine robot monster called the W4R-D3N. Said robot monster proceeds to lead you on a chase along the dam, where you have to deal with groups of incoming enemies, some of whom are called in as reinforcements from Hyperion's base on the moon. Why? Because why wouldn't the evil corporation you're fighting be able to call in airdrops from the moon? You can dual-wield ridiculously powerful and exotic guns. It's all about keeping a level playing field.

The point is, Gearbox wants to make quests more about being self-contained adventures and less about being sent off on yet another fetch quest. We could continue to go on about areas that Gibson wants to improve, but suffice it to say that the team at Gearbox isn't resting on its laurels for Borderlands 2. Now we're just eager to play the thing and see how it feels, and whether some of the user interface improvements Gibson promised feel like major upgrades. But we like what we've seen so far, that's for sure.

I have to sing praises to Gearbox - back in August at PAX they gave everyone that came to their panel a voucher for a free copy of Borderlands 2.

As soon as the game comes out they're going to mail me the 360 version.

----
To thank them, I bought a copy of the Game of the Year edition of Borderlands 1, then convinced three friends to also get copies of Borderlands so we could play co-op.

Turns out the DLC disc that also comes with the GOTY disc can install the content to multiple Xboxes - so my friends got $40 worth of DLC for free, and I only paid $30 for a new copy of the GOTY edition to begin with.

Fantastic deal.

OK, so from a story perspective, why are we still hunting for the vault? Are the original 4 characters going to be making any kind of appearance? Just wondering if anyone has read anything about the plot.

Not to mention all the shorter games on my Gamefly queue that I haven't gotten to.
