^^I usually put forth extra effort to (hopefully) find a parallel spot on the streets before "giving up" and going into a deck. The parking spots in those decks are pretty narrow in my opinion so I usually go all the way up to find a corner spot or something, lol.

I purposefully park in a deck in case I get saucy and take a cab home. I feel like my car is a lot safer in the deck overnight and pick it up the next morning

Oh if I think I might leave the car downtown overnight it definitely gets parked in a deck

speaking of parking decks:

Alexander Square is now going to charge 24/7 for parking, which sucks for those of us who have taken advantage of their free parking on nights and weekends policy for the better part of a decade

...and I was just bragging about how Raleigh has free parking on weekends. I hope that doesn't become a trend and spread to the other decks, although I'm sure it will.

http://dtraleigh.com/2014/04/spring-2014-restaurant-roundup/

Tons of restaurant news for DTR.

Quote :
"Beer, bakeries, and bread might be the theme for 2014. Downtown Raleigh continues to see more openings than closings and while some places close, the spaces aren’t empty for long.

For a complete list of eats, drinks, and coffees in and around downtown, make sure to bookmark the DT Eats page. Try something new!

The Person Street Bar has opened up and quickly become a neighborhood favorite. The Person Street plaza area is really coming around.
Pictured above is the new Hibernian Pub, rebuilt with two floors and a great outdoor patio.
The Raleigh Beer Garden is still in the design phases. The upcoming beer spot is having trouble getting through city planning unfortunately. The problem? What else but parking.
The North Street Beer Station, a bottle shop in Glenwood South, has opened up. It should officially open with fully stocked shelves soon. The place plans to install a takeout window and even deliver beer.
In the former Draft space in the 510 Glenwood building, The Oakz has opened up.
A new brewery called Storm Clouds Brewing plans to open in July according to their website. They will occupy the space where Napper Tandy’s used to be on West Street.
A new coffee shop in Seaboard Station is being worked on called Brew.
Staying with coffee, the shop Oak City Coffee Roasters have set up on West Hargett Street near the train tracks.
Happy and Hale, the downtown juice and veggie people, want to set up in one of the kiosks in City Plaza.
The owner of Taverna Agora, Lou Moshakos, wants to move his restaurant from North Raleigh to the empty building between Second Empire and the Holiday Inn on Hillsborough Street.
Moshakos is also bringing a Carolina Ale House to a new building at the corner of Tucker and Glenwood Avenue.
Also for Hillsborough Street, the restaurant space on the top floor of the Holiday Inn has been remodeled into the Skye Tower Lounge.
A new bread store, Boulted Bread, is planned to open in the cluster of retail shops on West South Street.
A dessert and cocktail bar called Bittersweet is close to opening in the PNC Tower along Martin Street.
The tasty treats just keep coming. Lucettegrace is a bakery planning to open in the former Crossfit space on the 200 South Salisbury block.
Tasty 8's will be a gourmet hot dog joint opening on Fayetteville Street where Spize used to be on the 100 block.
The Berkeley Cafe has now reopened. The owner of the former Sadlack’s Heroes on Hillsborough Street has given it a little makeover and made a cool hangout spot.
Bada Bing pizza has been taken over and is going to become DeMo’s Pizzeria and Deli. They should have the remodel done with the restaurant open this month or next."

^I wonder if Bada Bing sold or failed/foreclosed. I used to live above and while it wasn't the greatest pizza, the dude was always super nice.

Not sure I'd consider the area it's in North Raleigh. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Raleigh, though, and I'd hate to see them jack up their prices and/or reduce the menu if they move.

they are just responding to public perception, people think that if its not downtown its just a mediocre strip mall restaurant. I bet you see other good restaurants move ITB.

Anybody have any news on AC's new spot, Death & Taxes. Been on her webpage for a while with no real updates, and all of the old articles mentioned Fall 2013 as the opening date.

The area where Tarverna Agora resides is most certainly North Raleigh. That's like the archetypical North Raleigh area. Anything north of 540 needs a new label though, like North North Raleigh. (NNR)

Anything north of 540 is in Wake Forest as far as I'm concerned, I don't give a shit what the street address says.

I feel like the 800 lb gorilla in the room downtown is the bus station. As bad as the homeless situation was getting in Moore Square, the amount of bums that hang around that affects the business on all 4 streets where there are entrances. I'm surprised local restaurant owners haven't been more vocal about it.

Ultimately they plan on moving the bus station to West St by the new train station.

greyhound has already been moved. moving the moore square bus stop to the new train station has been discussed, but its not a done deal yet. there is also discussion of moving it east a bit. in the interim you will probably see a few changes that improve flow and increase capacity that may also remove some of the pedestrian "dead" zones which may help with panhandling

Monuments to whom? Also, unless they're fucking impressive, they don't tend to be draws on their own. More like attractive additions to areas you already have a reason to go to.

I'm curious to check it out as well. Apparently some other company (Lyft) is here as of today as well, which is interesting timing. Lyft requires you to login using facebook though, so they can get fucked I'll use Uber.

Sidecar has announced they are coming to the area, along with another local Charlotte start up (but I cant think of the name). Raleigh currently has no regulations on the number of 'taxis', this isnt surprising. I imagine pretty soon they'll pass some kind of regulation to limit this.

^ around the corner on wilmington street

to be honest, i'm terrified to go in there

i'm afraid it'll be all wrong and i'll never want to go back

ex: admittedly i go at weird times because i eat during my late afternoon errands, but i'm pretty sure i've never seen the three white people who are holding up their fingers, and i absolutely sure i've never seen the employee pictured in the center

Person St. bar is pretty legit. It's like a dive bar that actually has good decor.

I'm also looking forward to the Tupelo Honey coming to DTR. However, the fact that it is in the bottom of one of those new condo monstrosities sort of kills it for me, tbh.

No, but seriously, get excited if or when they debut full service there. Ridesharing is cool, I guess. It certainly disrupts established taxi cartels, and will hopefully cut down on drunk driving. Maybe Raleigh has changed enough in the 10 years since I lived there, but it was never a big taxi market to begin with. Too much of a driving culture, plus you can basically traverse the entire length of downtown on foot in like 15 minutes, so perhaps you won't ever see more than UberX. The appeal for most people in larger metro areas who enjoy using Uber as a service lies in their Black Car/SUV service. When you rely on taxis regularly, and they are awful, getting a clean, climate controlled E class or some other type of luxury sedan/SUV to scoop you is so much more preferable to a city licensed cab.

Also, keep in mind that UberX drivers are just basically...some dude. They say they screen them, but the standards are VERY different from those of limo/cab drivers. Anything can happen anywhere, but even more so with Lyft/UberX, it's just some person. I say this from having had to file simple assault charges against an UberX driver here in DC before.

UberX is what I always understood Uber to be, I didn't even know they had other services. I'm happy that UberX is in Raleigh.

I asked this question in chit chat but why does uber have any value?

I can use taxi magic and get a taxi to me in no time. Any time i try to use uber x there is always a multiplier because I am traveling in peak times. What is exciting about paying 1.5x+ for a cab?

*I've lived in both DC and RDU, so those are my cities of reference.
