He does pull the whole cast together. On their own, I think the rest of the characters aren't that funny. The black dude is terrible and Nick is okay...but more annoying than funny. Zooey has always been much more quirky than funny.

But they all play off Schmidt to usually bring together decent episodes.

Schmidt gets a lot of the best lines, but I love how stupid/pathetic Nick is. I always looked at Winston as playing the straight man to the other guys. When they're being ridiculous, he's typically the calm one, which is why it's especially funny when he's fantasizing over strangers or getting wasted on fruity drinks, "So naughty!"
