For those of you that shave, have any of you used this service? I've been using a regular Mach 3 for about 10 years now but the price of shaving cartridges has steadily been going up... nowadays it's like $15 for five cartridges. This website is offering 5 cartridges a month for $1 a pop which is enticing.

The site seems legit but apparently their promotional video just went viral so the website is having trouble keeping up with the traffic. Regardless, here is their site, if you are able to get through:

http://www.dollarshaveclub.com/

And their video, which is admittedly pretty funny:

Wow. Five blades.

As if one razor wasn't enough for your face, let's use four more to peel the skin off after the hair!

I pay about $0.17 for a razor blade, and it lasts me about a week.

but then again, I shave like a man (http://thewolfweb.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=574643&page=12)

Here's the report from Engineering. Someone put it in the bathroom: I want to wipe my ass with it. They don't tell me what to invent—I tell them. And I'm telling them to stick two more blades in there. I don't care how. Make the blades so thin they're invisible. Put some on the handle. I don't care if they have to cram the fifth blade in perpendicular to the other four, just do it!

Rite-aid sells mach 3 knock-off razorblades that are great. They shave closer and last longer then mach 3s, they are way cheaper (less than $1 per cartridge), and more often that not they have a coupon on the refill packages or are on sale with a free rite-aid card (like a VIC or MVP card). I have been happily using them for over a year now.

The Mach3 Turbo (or whatever Gillette blade with the vibrating head) has done so well for me over the past few years, that I'm almost scared to buy anything different. But fuck, that shit is so damn expensive that it almost keeps me from shaving to so often in order to not have to buy so many blades (don't worry, I shave down to a stubble with an electric razor as to now wear out the blades with my long facial hairs).

I might give this a try (or buy the knock-offs like ^ he said...but I don't know if they work on the vibrating head AND I don't think I have any Rite-Aids down here).

Mach 3 for life.

I just get the blades from Amazon. When they've got a good sale going they're just over a buck each. http://slickdeals.net/newsearch.php#q=mach+3&titleonly=1

So say i currently pay $1.25 per Mach 3 blade, and switch them out on average 1-2 times per month, my current blade cost is $2.50 at the most. So I could join the Dollar Shave Club, and pay more to shave with a shittier blade. No thx. Great commercial though. Maybe it makes sense for people who switch blades out weekly or something.

I would warn people to not buy blades off eBay. There are tons of counterfeit blades there and all you'll end up with is a razor burned face and lighter pockets.

i hate those fancy mach razors and the like. hair gets caught in the blades just as easily as any disposable safety razor.

I will continue to stick with the blue gillette "good news" razors with the added gel strip. Those work as well as anything, imo. I have a pretty tough beard, too.

^ Meant that...but I also figured since these companies are just about making money and margins...that they make you buy those specific heads as well. But I've never tried the different heads.

I have been using Mach 3 for years and tried to switch to a cheaper single blade once........ONCE. It jacked my face all up with the worst razor burn ever. That being said, I have a REALLY thick beard, so the Mach 3 may be more necessary for me than other folks.

I love the mach 3 for my head, tried using a cheaper two blade razor and it gave me bad razor burn. Will definitely give the middle of the road razors on this website a shot once I run out of the ones I have though. And I really don't care how much closer a safety razor gets and how much cheaper it is, I hate shaving as is, no need to prolong it.

bump

Just received mine in the mail and shaved last night.

Initial review: These work not quite as well as a Mach 3 but definitely get the job done. Considering they (the 2-blade option) are about $12 cheaper per blade cartridge replacement, they are well worth the money. Right now my face is nice and smooth and my bank account is $12 richer than it normally would be. One thing to note -- My facial hairs are quite thick and I had four days of peach fuzz that it handled easily. The aloe strip thing started to shed off though but that may be just due to my thick hairs. I can get at least one more shave out of the razor I used last night.

I also see that I have two free months of razors now after two people signed up with my referral link. If any of those two are from you, thank you!

Well perhaps peach fuzz isn't the correct term to describe it. Four days of growth.

How many shaves did you get out of a Mach 3 blade?

^Probably about three shaves per cartridge before it starts cutting my face up due to being dull.

One 5-pack cartridge of Mach 3 is about $15 (here in Huntsville, of course I'm sure if you did some digging you could find some coupons or better deals or whatever) so shaving an average of 3 times a week gives me about 5 weeks of shaving for $15.

One 5-pack cartridge from shave club is $3 so shaving 3 times a week will require 7.5 razors which comes out to $4.5 for 5 weeks of shaving.

So I guess I was originally comparing the price of the 5-packs, that's where I got the $12 from but still $4.5 vs. $15 is quite a bit of savings (or should I say quite a bit of... shavings? )

They can be had for $2 per blade on Amazon currently, closer to $1 per blade when they're on sale at Amazon (that's when I stock up).

Wow I shave 5 times a week and only change blades every 3ish weeks...and even then it's not due to my face getting cut up, I can just feel it's not quite as sharp as it was. I guess your ticker hairs dull it faster or something...

Well yeah it is entirely dependent on the user-- how thick their hair is and how often they need to shave. Due to Middle Eastern heritage I've got thick black/dark brown hair that grows pretty fast. Typically if I shave at around 7am I'll have a five o clock shadow by 5pm. If you have light colored hair or it doesn't come in too thick or grow too fast this probably isn't something for you.

So you get 15 shaves out of one Mach 3 razor before having to replace? That's awesome. The only real benefit to having facial hair like mine is I can do just about any type of beard/mustache/sideburn design that I want.

[Edited on March 28, 2012 at 2:35 PM. Reason : Also, you get a free month of razors for every person you refer, so there is that too.]

I get at least 1 month from my mach 3s. I shave 3-5 day/week though (depending on how lazy I am). I'm pretty sure I've gone 5-6 months without changing blades

Barbasol, FTMFW!

And why is your mirror fogging up?

Also, I need to start using Amazon more... $2/blade? wooo

^^^^ Haven't found a mirror that really stays fog free, the one I use just hangs on a hook in my shower and I warm it up with the hot water and it stays pretty fog free for most of the time I use it. Fogs up a lot faster when it is cold and you have hot steam.

^^ that makes me cringe thinking about it. Granted I only use razors to shave my head and there is a lot more hair on my head than my face but if I try to get 4+ shaves from one I start risking cutting my head up.

Back when I used a Mach 3 Turbo they would last maybe 5ish shaves before they started to hurt. I guess it just depends on your face and beard, and how you shave.

Now that I use a double-edge, the blades are cheap enough I can use a new one with each shave...especially since I now shave ~2x/week. 17-cents per blade isn't going to put me out on the street.

Lifehacker ran a story where somebody figured out the company that Dollar Shave Club buys from. You can just buy straight from them and get razors crazy cheap.

Okay,

Ill weigh in on this, I still use the Mach 3, ive tried others, and its the best shave for me.

I only buy razors with an open back design, as that the only way to get the skin out of it.

I have pretty thick facial hair, and a decent amout of it (ill be scratchy by 5pm).

I have no problem getting a 2/3 weeks out of a mach 3 cartridge, now I don't really mind a rough shave, and i strop the razor against my hand every time i use it. I also only shave in the shower, after washing my face and applying conditioner.
