"Fallout 4 set in Boston?

Reddit tipster claims Bethesda has been "scoping out and researching" Massachusetts capital for upcoming unannounced game; Fallout 3, New Vegas in-game messages lend credence to assertion.

If a new rumor proves accurate, Bethesda's next Fallout game will be set in Boston. A Reddit user going by "fallout4boston" claims the unannounced Fallout 4 will be set in the Massachusetts capital city.
Might Fallout 4 do battle in Faneuil Hall?

Might Fallout 4 do battle in Faneuil Hall?

This tipster says Bethesda has been "scoping out and researching" the city, and suggests the developer has a "strong connection" to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a prestigious research university near Boston. The Reddit user "may or may not be an MIT employee," according to the post.

A Bethesda representative told GameSpot, "We don't comment on rumors and speculation."

According to the Fallout Wikia page, "The Commonwealth" was referenced in 2008's Fallout 3. Four real-world states in the US categorize themselves as Commonwealths: Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Virginia, and Massachusetts. Bethesda lead designer Emil Pagliarulo told 1UP in 2009 that the Commonwealth reference in Fallout 3 was in fact speaking about Massachusetts, not any of the other three states.

Additionally, Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas included mentions of a mysterious "Institute," which is located in The Commonwealth. This could potentially be related to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology referenced by the Reddit user.

The most recent Fallout title was 2010's Fallout: New Vegas, which was developed by Obsidian Entertainment and set in a postapocalyptic Las Vegas. Its predecessor, Fallout 3, was developed by Bethesda Game Studios and took place in Washington DC and the surrounding area. "

Assuming this is true (Redit/4chan anonymous sources tend to be inaccurate) Let's see if Bethesda can do something original this time.

Fallout 3, while a fun game, was a pathetic mashup of story elements from Fallout 1 and 2 set in a geographical location they had no business being. New Vegas was much more original with more original factions despite being much more closely connected to the original games.

Let's see if they can make this game without falling back on the Brotherhood of Steel or the Enclave, both of which have no business being there. Supermutants don't either but I'm pretty sure there will be supermutants in every Fallout game.

Chicago would be better, but sounds cool nonetheless.

Myself, like 99% of the population, didn't play 1 or 2. So it was all new to us, damnit!

Not trashing you, (wish I had played them) just being objective.

guess they really needed to consult you on what should and should not appear in their game they designed.

^^ I have to be the one who designs a game to criticize it?

^^^ 3 was clearly much more popular, but Beth wouldn't have bothered with buying the franchise and making the game if the first two weren't successful.

no, but you're criticizing the use of organizations and creatures that exist in a fictional universe like you know better than they do, or something

I don't know if I know better than they do, but I do know better than what they put in the game. They didn't invent this fictional universe, and when people enjoy aspects of a universe they have every right to criticize it when something comes out that is not internally consistent or doesn't make sense.

If grr Martin dies before he finishes his books, and whoever takes over writes a story about the lannisters and Starks fighting a war on the other side of the world where neither of them have any business being jus because people like seeing the lannisters vs Starks, people would be disappointed.

I wrote several long posts about it on another forum but it's blocked at work, and I'm not going to recreate it because I have already written it once and again, I'm at work. So I'll get back to you after 5 today.

Let's just say that the gist of it is that Fallout 3 is unoriginal and the world doesn't make sense, and New Vegas is way better.

Yeah, I guess I don't get it. Books are books, games are games. If you want the book story, read the book?

^ I can't tell what you are saying, only books should have stories? What about movies? Tv shows? And if game stories dont matter then why do they bother trying to make them?

Here were just a few examples of the problems with fallout 3. It's a long post and most ppl don't give a shit so I will jus link the thread.

And I'm post 2 and 6 here for a more in-depth conversation.

An example of what I'm saying: movies based on books don't absolutely have to have the exact same story as the books they are based upon... meaning if you wanted the exact same story as the book you might as well read the book. If you have an opportunity to use an existing story in a new medium you might as well tweak the story a bit to make it a new experience, otherwise you're just being repetitive.

I don't really see the importance where the story takes place, did it really matter? As it was D.C. provided a cool backdrop for a game. I can see some of your points you made in those threads, but I stick to movies when it comes to nitpicking the lack of farming for food, abundance of electricity, etc. not jiving with the world they try to create.

And ultimately, yes I play a game for the gameplay. Story isn't all that important to me. I doubt I'd force myself to play a terrible game just to finish out a story and I'm more than willing to completely look the other way when the story sucks but the game is fun to play. I realize I'm probably in the minority there.

No I agree DC was a cool backdrop, and there were infinite numbers of awesome ways to show what DC was like in the already established fallout universe, in an original way.

Instead what they did was take groups that already existed in fallout, change almost everything about them, put them thousands of miles away under the flimsiest of justifications, and insert a derivative plot that's a straight up mash-up of the originals. They actually could have stayed "truer" to the originals by making fallout 3 less similar.

Overall it was good though and I enjoyed it, but I have said before that it was a good game but not a good Fallout. New vegas was both, and hopefully fallout 4 can be also.

^^ lol yeah there are lots of non-americans on that forum and not all of them like America all that much.

Anyone been following this website?
http://thesurvivor2299.com/

It's either great viral marketing or an epic hoax from people who put way too much effort into it. The amount of time people have put into decoding the messages posted over the last couple of weeks has been incredible, and it changes every day or so.

Here's an extremely long video about it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nr2IWsUwYS0#t=1

Either way, we will know in a week whether it's a hoax or not.

I played 1&2 many times back in the day and I couldn't tell you if the bother hood or enclave should or shouldn't be in any area. I would rather them keep those characters instead of adding new ones so I can keep nostalgiaing out like I did with 3. They should really port 1&2 to iOS/android, I wouldn't get anything productive done.

" Fallout 4 in development, set in Boston - Report
Casting documents reveal details about long-awaited role-playing game.

by Eddie Makuch on December 11, 2013

The Fallout faithful were dealt a blow recently after Bethesda confirmed the Fallout 4 website was indeed a hoax, but now new evidence suggests the game is real and set in Boston. Casting documents obtained by Kotaku for a project code-named Institue include scripts and character descriptions believed to be associated with Fallout 4.

One line of text from a script starts off with the familiar line "War. War never changes," which started off Fallout 1-3 featuring the voicework of actor Ron Perlman. However, this time around, it appears the character will deliver the line.

Other documents speak about a mission set in the Institute--described as a post-apocalyptic version of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass. The Commonwealth, which was referenced in Fallout 3 as being what remained of Massachusetts, is also mentioned in the documents.

A report from August 2012 claimed Bethesda had conducted a scouting trip to Boston and the immediate surrounding areas, launching speculation that the unannounced game would be set there.

Characters referenced in the document include a radio DJ named Travis Miles and an engineer called Sturges, described as a "cross between Buddy Holly and Vin Diesel." The documents also include casting calls for both male and female versions of Fallout 4's main character, and explain that the player will begin the game in a cryogenic sleep chamber.

As Kotaku points out, it is possible that some or all of these details were invented for the purposes of the casting call; and if they weren't, they could still change through the development process. It is also unknown if the project will called Fallout 4 or if players will get to travel outside of Boston.

A Bethesda representative declined to comment to Kotaku and to GameSpot.

The most recent Fallout title was 2010's Fallout: New Vegas, which was developed by Obsidian Entertainment and set in a postapocalyptic Las Vegas.

Its predecessor, Fallout 3, was developed by Bethesda Game Studios (BGS) and took place in Washington DC and the surrounding area. Bethesda Game Studios, which also developed The Elder Scrolls V: Skryim, moved onto a new project in April 2013.

Bethesda also recently trademarked Starfield and Soulburst, as well as Void Engine, none of which have been officially announced to date."
