^see, CHASS is weighing us down. Time to shed that dead weight and force people into real majors or to their homeland a few miles west.

Yes. NC State is poor in CHASS but EB I and II really remind me of Silicone Valley.

We should follow Duke to put a chapel on campus to enhance the humanities atmosphere.

Nah, we don't need a chapel on campus. Though a Hooters would do.

The problem is the Acceptance rate is too high. NCSU accepts over half the students that apply (52%).

CHASS majors are people who couldn't get into Chapel Hill..

You are going to fall behind at NCSU because you aren't going to build as many contacts with people who are going places, but all of that can be overcome by your own talent and hard work.

WTF why is this considered a good thing? UNC has had a problem with grade inflation for a long time and it HELPS their ranking. That is fucked up.

No one gives a shit about ranking unless they are trying to become a professor. They care about jobs. NC State has the biggest Engineering Career fair in the state. I'll take that over some high ranking in a shitty survey any day.

[old thread but just reading it over]

^^ true, but as an engineer who gets sent to State to speak and recruit on behalf of my company some, I can definitely say that we utilize the face to face time and paper resumes as well. You still always have to apply online because of the way jobs are posted and tracked and government regulations and all that (it helps a big company keep their records for reporting and in general helps keep records of everything job related within the company. It would be a mess having to deal with thousands of paper resumes if that was the ONLY way we handled recruiting).

I typically take notes on resumes while speaking to candidates and they actually are used and good ones passed on to department managers. You just have to also apply online if you are actually interested in a position.

Try biggest engineering career fair on the east coast. I heard it from LMV himself last week. You're not calling our Dean of Engineering a liar are you?

but seriously its not difficult at all to get an internship through the career fair. Entry level jobs are even possible with a good resume and a little bit of effort.

QFT! When I started working at my current job and people asked where I graduated, I had a number of people say "NC State? They have a pretty tough senior design program for their aerospace students, right?"

I don't blame CHASS I blame first year college and the state Congress cutting more and more money from the UNC system. FYC sets students on a 5+ year path beginning with complacency. There's nothing wrong with starting in one major and changing to pursue your interests, but starting off with no major and partying for a year, I do not believe, is a successful formula.

If you talk to the professors, they are sick of not having had a raise in years. Couple that with constant upper-level administration turnover and its no wonder that departments across the board are not too thrilled with both State and the state of NC.

Student cost is also flying through the roof. Tuition has increased 5 fold in the last ten years. Even a meal plan is absurdly high now with McCrory deciding to tax student meal plans.

As far as selectivity goes, my friend's son who was a solid B student with SAT scores above the average for NCSU was denied acceptance for this year and that surprised me with all this talk about how State isn't selective enough. While we are no Ivy League, we certainly aren't letting everyone onto the brickyard either.

NC State, by charter, is not supposed to be exclusive. We were created to serve a different purpose than UNC-CH, State is a land grant university that is intended to be accessible to the people of the state and to serve the people of the state. It was never supposed to be exclusive; it was always supposed to be accessible, by design.

The real reason why NCSU's rank (101) is so low is not mostly because of the academics, but because the poor quality major athletics programs. a lot of the other power conference public schools like the ones in the Big 10 have higher acceptance rates and lower SAT scores yet they are all at least like 30 spots higher. If the athletics were better more people would want to come to the school and graduate, more donations, etc., better sports can improves the perception of a school's academics.

^ I don't think that's true at all. When was the last time you saw an Ivy League school dominate the college sports world? It might not be fair to include those schools, but even then there are others such as Illinois, Berkeley, and Washington that are considered amazing public schools yet aren't known for their teams.

I am not saying athletics is everything but it helps definitely. the schools you mentioned were already traditionally strong academically

I am talking about schools with comparable academics, Look at FSU for example, a few years ago they were in the 120s now it is up like 30 spots - It wasnt the academics that got better but the sports. you honestly think NCSU would drop this low if the athletics weren't so lackluster?

I mean, you could argue that engineering is what makes our freshman retention rate so low and I'd bet a large part of that are form kids that are under prepared/unmotivated to pursue engineering. Or you could say that CHASS gets fucked with our funding and the programs suffer as a result.

It's all relative. You'd think for the number of students we have, we'd pay our faculty more and attract better faculty members. NC State instead has cut major and minor programs, increased enrollment, gotten huge donations from alumni (Poole, Goodnight, etc.) and we've just gotten worse. The university is a money making machine that's not interested in making the school better as a whole, but only funding programs that get them a high return. I don't know why on Earth we let Campbell beat us to a law program in Raleigh, that shit could have made bank while being profitable.

^ Just saw that too. What I had heard from a professor a couple years ago was that the previous administration (Oblinger) didn't really do much in the way of trying to make State appealing to the people who do these rankings. One of Woodson's big things as chancellor was to fix that - seems like he's doing a good job so far.
