I didn't spend anything on the meat. Paid for the experience, the harvest was just a bonus

You can ship it for fairly cheap.

go to the beauty salon store and get some of the 40 bleach. they will know what you are referring to

I did it on my deer head and the bone is just fine. Next time I encourage you to use dermestid beetles. A lot less hassle than boiling and a good colony can get rid of all tissue in 24 hours.

I was able to get in the woods last weekend. Not a single deer in sight.

However I did check the trail cam over at a new place we are hunting this year (or will hunt). Tons of activity, one picture had 5 deer in it. So far no huge bucks have shown up on camera, but plenty of does, which I figure will be good once the rut kicks in.

Managed to take out two does yesterday evening at the farm. I dropped the first one at about 150 yards. The other one took off running, and I shot her freehand around 150 yards, dropped her. I'll be hunting for horns now. I might take out another doe or two near the end of the season.

So we've noticed our food plot we hunt, which typically has deer all over it, has been pretty barren lately. Nothing even on the deer camera. Yesterday my brother went to walk around the other side of the food plot and noticed a tree climber a foot off of the property line, but hunting across property lines on our land. All around the bottom of the tree there were shotgun shells and cigarette butts. Who in the world smokes cigs while they are deer hunting!

We talked with that land owner who we have a good relationship with and he said it shouldn't be anyone he's given permission to, so take down the climber and give it to him. Hopefully the deer show back up. I'm taking off work next Thursday and Friday to hunt the full moon.

Saw 3 tonight...two does and button head.

Got pictures of 3 new bucks in broad daylight yesterday morning. Seems to be some new bucks on camera every time I go so really looking forward to cold weather next week

I am guessing the new bucks in broad daylight is due to the rut. Hopefully you get him tomorrow, because I think the rut is coming to end. Well, the rut is ending around my area anyways.

Got a scrub buck this afternoon (4 pointer). I wouldn't have shot him, but he had been shot by somebody earlier in the year and had a bad limp. They moved good today. Saw about 7 different deer, all does.

I passed on a decent sized doe 2 weeks ago. Watched her for about 15 minutes then 2 little ones came out and I didn't have the heart to do it.

what brand of thermal base layers do you guys wear? Under Armour seems to have a bazillion different levels and types. Base 1.0 to 4.0, infrared, ColdGear, etc. I somehow lost my Base 3.0 leggings and i'm not sure if i want to spend the money to replace them. Bass Pro's XPS brand is half the cost, but even their 3.0 level feels like nothing more than a cheap fleece.

Lower: Cold Gear + Rocky Fleece Thermals + Camo Bib (omit some or all of base layers if temps are warm.

Upper: Cold gear + Camo Hoodie + Camo Jacket if temps are cold

I have plenty of fleece or flanels that i add in if it gets really cold.

I'm an idiot. I just wear Patagonia thermals with a shirt and pants then a camo jacket. Some days are worse than others. I just use whiskey to get through the cold.

I do under armour for all my stuff.

Check out the under armour outlets. They are much cheaper unless you find a slickdeals thread.

I normally go with the base layer cold gear shirt and leggings and then throw on some normal camo pants and long sleeve as well as a jacket.

I have their thermal socks too...Im a fan of UA

yeah UA is great. They just make so many different variants of ColdGear. That's the only thing I hate, it's like WHICH ONE DO I NEED!?

to be honest though, I don't do too much deer hunting anymore. Most of what I shoot is upland game. So lighter "active" baselayers are what i wear. and the Champion brand from Target have worked out great. I still save my heavier stuff for football games though

Look through their site if you want to figure out "what to wear"

they break it down pretty well into what is best in what scenarios and the reviews online help too.

their stuff is great for active hunters and keeping scent lock with it...although scent lock is a joke.

UA stuff is great, but damn it's so freaking expensive. I've been taking my chances with off-brand stuff and it's been sufficing

^this is what I do. I'm more concerned with scent control than brand names. It never seems to get cold enough to worry about more than two layers of something. Jogging pants and sweatshirts with my outer camo have worked for me for years. I'm convinced deer don't care anyways. I've grabbed a gun and headed straight out the door with my work khakis and polo shirt, and had deer stroll right under my stand. Not ideal, but if deer are moving, you just need to be there. That's my theory anyways.

Went hunting Christmas Eve, and finally had some luck. Had 4 doe walk up on me, I took the biggest one. I filmed it all on my new Polaroid action cam. I'll see if I can post the video later (although the sun had just gone down, so the quality isnt amazing.

cream of mushroom, onion soup mix, little water. just skin and gut them and throw them in whole. pull the meat off the bones and throw it back in the gravy. serve it over rice/biscuits/mashed taters.

don't forget to cut the glands out from under their armpits

Put down a nice doe on the 31st at about 4:30. She came in with a group of 5 others.

First kill with my Tikka T3 in .308.

Got her in the oven a moment ago. Teriyaki/Garlic/Sriracha deer jerky. Should be ready in about 4 hours.

Finally got one myself. She came in with a group of 4. I got it on video, but it came out a bit grainy since it was right at dusk. We got about 30lbs of hamburger along with the tenderloin and backstrap.

Ended the year with two does and a four pointer. It was a decent season. I had countless oportunities with does, just no horns. I stuck a doe earlier with the bow, but couldn't find her. Honestly, I'm glad the season is over. I get obsessed with it and find myself hunting when I should be doing something more productive. Anyways, I'll probably be drifting the river for squirrels this coming weekend

Still running with this thread I suppose.

Anyone going this weekend?

I've put a five pointer in the freezer already with the bow, looking for some horns now. I might take out a doe if the timing is right this weekend. We shall see.

I may try to go this weekend. It's was nice and cold last week, but will be warm this weekend. Hope that doesn't bring in droves of out of towners.

I'm hearing the 3-4 year old bucks are looking great.

glad to see this thread got picked back up.

I didnt get a chance to go this weekend. My dad and brother went. My dad said a buck walked up on him, but he was getting eaten by mosquitoes and flenched and spooked the deer. The place where I am hunting this year is a new spot deep in the swamp. I got bit about 50 times last week putting out corn and the camera. I'm hoping to get out there this week.

What do y'all use for bug repellent? I was looking into buying one of the ThermaCELL repellent things, since they are supposed to work great and be odorless. Anyone have any experience?

^thermocell is great. That's all I've ever used, and deer walk close enough to me for bow shots. I've never used a battery powered thermocell though, I use the little fuel bottles.

I was finally able to get in the woods last Saturday. It was raining most of the day, so I sat in my dad's stand which has an umbrella mounted to the tree. Right at dark I had a spike walk up on me. Didnt shoot of course.

F&S is predicting this upcoming weekend as the best days to hunt. I'm taking off work Friday to get in the woods. I was hoping for a late football game so I could get a morning hunt in, and of course they put the game at noon.

Got a nice seven pointer this weekend. 15.5" wide, 160 lbs on the hoof. He was chasing does hard Saturday morning, grunting almost every time he took off strutting through the field. The bucks are definitely in full rut where I'm at around New Bern.

Hunting in city limits this year with a bow... should be interesting.

Trail cams are showing packs of does as big as 7, every morning and evening, so Ill probably throw some corn our daily and try to take a few on Saturday.

Saw just 1 buck so far, last week - 8 pointer on the cam ... came by the camera twice, but havent seen him since.

Also, spotted an albino twice in the same week with a pack of other does in my neighborhood. Should I let the albino do her thing, or take her out?

^good luck with the bow! That's my favorite hunting. I sometimes wish my area would go strictly bow, I think the deer would get bigger.

I'm on the fence about albino's. I just don't think I would do it, but I wouldn't condemn someone who would. Here is an article of an albino that was recently killed by an ECU student. The comments are from one end of the spectrum to the other...

^yes! Several bucks have been killed around my area, including mine, that were chasing does, neck swolled, and rank. No doubt they are in rut. I'd say there is about one more week of bucks running stupid. After this week, I think they go back in to hiding and walking at midnight.
