I am thinking about switching to straight talk and have a quick question. I am hoping to borrow a friend's old at&t iPhone 3gs and was looking online and I am going to need to change the APN settings. Do I need to change them back so she can use it on att again if needed? Anyone use unlockit.co.nz? is it easy to change the settings back?

Also if you have straight talk, any comments on service or speed, etc?

i use straight talk. and unlockit.co.nz. and on a 3gs. unlockit works. you can reset the apn profile in the settings, so yes, super easy to do that.. speed isnt that great.

speed is the same as att or tmo, depending on your phone

Yeah unlockit.co.nz will work for the internet APN settings, but I never could get it to work for the MMS settings.

I ended up jailbreaking all of our iphone's, and plopping on the cydia app to set the APN and MMS APN.

^thats what I've read online. I'm not to worried about MMS right now anyways, I'll still have my Verizon phone for a month. Glad to hear unlockit works well.

okay, so my wife hasn't been happy with her RW phone/service...as noted by others, the phone is about as entry level as you can get and while she's far from a power user, it's just so SLOW

furthermore, calls drop all the time and 3G service is spotty, at best

i'm not here to figure it out, though (i'm working with RW right now and we'll see if we can get something worked out, but i don't hold out much hope)...since the return period has been extended until march 2nd (due to the OTA last month), we still have a little time to (maybe) get it worked out

in the meantime, however, i want a backup plan...and so i'm looking at straight talk and virgin

anyone in RALEIGH have either ST or virgin? if so, what's your experience? we live where we SHOULD get 3G from every carrier (despite the issues with sprint/RW) and that's all that she needs it for (we have my verizon phone for when we travel away from cities or the interstate ) i'm looking for actual experience in this area

also, trying to figure out which phone to get (on either ST or virgin)...suggestions?

we'll probably go with a phone that's at or below $200...she's not a power user and we're trying to keep the cost down

so, in your opinion, you think going with a GSM phone is better than opting for a new phone that uses the verizon network?

virgin uses sprint to my knowledge. I would go straighttalk for unlimited everything or if you just need data, tmo unlimited data + 200 minutes for like 25 or 35 prepaid. I had st in raleigh and it's as good as att, which is to say not stellar but light years ahead of sprint

Nope, if you can find a Verizon ST phone that you can live with, its definitely the better network.

But when I looked, there wasn't a single Verizon ST phone that wasn't just garbage (granted this was a year ago almost, but every phone was either a feature phone, or running Android 2.2/2.3).

well, i don't know that there are any better options in my preferred price range, even now

i think the samsung proclaim is about par with the motorola defy XT that RW uses...which is to say, less than stellar for any but the most basic of users

i'll look into AT&T phones

thanks for the feedback, y'all

I ended up ditching Verizon and getting a Nexus 4 on ST with an ATT sim. Had it about 3 months and it has been great so far. I have HSPA+ everywhere I've been, including a road trip to Charlotte. Call quality has been fine and no drops.

Would definitely recommend it, but I've heard that ST has stopped selling ATT sims.

It's true, go to straighttalk.com and actually try to buy a SIM card. You can only buy a T mobile one.

that would suck...my bionic includes (disabled) GSM radios, but the unlock procedure is pretty easy...i figured that, at least, i'd throw in an AT&T SIM and use ST after my contract is up

i can still do page plus, though depending on the CSR, they might refuse to activate a 4G phone (which they can tell from the IMEI, if it starts with 99, apparently)

Well fuck me, who has two thumbs and is a moron? Noen.

I definitely wouldn't be signing up for a tmobile sim. If its tmobile only, your better off just getting a tmobile prepaid plan directly

^yeah that is definitely true. might as well just go straight to t mobile - at least you will get customer service.

i wonder why ATT decided to shut them out. i cant imagine ST taking up too much bandwidth but you never know.

Yes, ATT sims still work just fine (both our phones at ST ATT sims).

^That article answers the question. Yes you can still buy ATT sims for ST, just sold out through straighttalksim.com at the moment. Phwew (and it sounds like that means quagmire02 can still use ST )

it sounds like everywhere is just out of stock...whether that means that AT&T only allows so many to be sold within a certain timeframe or they're simply waiting for more ST-specific SIMs to be made/shipped/whatever, i don't know

no idea...but walmart is OOS of the "real" AT&T gophone SIMs, as well...so it could just be an issue with AT&T

i'm going to be right next to a walmart later today and thought about stopping in to see if they have any in-store

Both. Pro Wireless has them for 79$. Ebay has them for 35-ish$ if you get a good auction. Also pro wireless will cut a regular SIM down to micro for you.

Hey all, I have a new Credit Card I need to spend a bunch on to get the rewards, and ST service refills seem like a pretty good way to do it.

For anyone interested, I can offer 3 month refill pin #'s for $100. For reference, these are $125+tax from Walmart (link)

If you're interested, send me a paypal gift payment of $100 and your Straight Talk cell number, and I'll activate the 3 month refill on that number. Usually takes about an hour. PM me for more information. This comes out to $33.33 a month, which is a 33% savings after taxes.

^I see some websites list the .rdf file (UAProf). Why doesn't that site?

Also, for MMSC I see some put http://mmsc.cingular.com and some put MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com:80

which is correct?

^They are both correct. Port 80 is the default port for http requests. So putting http://mmsc.cingular.com is being executed as http://mmsc.cingular.com:80
