what you order
if I linger for 2 hours eating a $10 meal I should tip more than staying for 20 minutes for a $40 meal, not less
(if i was writing an algorithm i would also add a factor thats based on how many times your waiter/waitress shows up, and how many extra requests you made)
does anyone second my motion? 2/13/2013 6:05:12 PM |

Oooh, a tipping thread. This should be good.
I think if servers (what a bullshit PC word) wanted to make more money they should have gotten better jobs. Why am I supplementisng the poor pay they get from their employers?

Depends on how busy the place is. If me staying longer means another party doesn't get seated and my server loses out, then I feel obligated to tip more.
If the place is dead and I'm clearly not holding anyone up, then I give the regular 15% plus or minus how good the server is. 2/13/2013 6:09:37 PM |

You should tip based on how many drinks you order, not how expensive each drink is. This assumes of course that you're drinking beer and not ordering a dozen Pimm's cups. 2/13/2013 6:10:47 PM |

I also tip well if I'm trying to eat fast, like grabbing a bite before a show or a meeting. If the server can get my food ordered, beg the kitchen to bump it ahead and drop my food, refill my drinks and hand me the check at the same time then I'm going to tip well. 2/13/2013 6:19:20 PM |

I'll allow it.

oh wow this thread hasnt been done before.
you tip when you get good service, not by default, and not based on the amount.
you tip how much you want to, because you arent retarded, and you know how much they deserve.
there is no metric or algorithm, youre overthinking this.
if more of these fucknuts didnt get tipped then they would realize they suck at their jobs and quit. then they could be replaced by someone who doesnt suck.
or you could keep them on at your business and have them serve black people exclusively because they wont get tipped regardless of service quality. then black people might get tired of shitty service and start tipping and the silly system could be eliminated.
magic stone kills so many birds.

the amount of time is not an independent component of how much i'll tip...though i'll second the notion that i will tip better if the place is busy, i'm keeping them from having another group, and they're still fast without making me feel rushed
there's only so much i'm going to tip...i consider myself a consistently good tipper because i know the job sucks and if they do it WELL, i'm happy to tip WELL
but at the same time, it's their JOB to keep me happy...i don't tip the garbageman for NOT spilling garbage all over my lawn when s/he picks it up 2/13/2013 6:39:57 PM |

Chicken, egg. Many servers (waiters, waitresses) take those jobs because they know that if they're good at what they do, and work at a restaurant with either fast turnaround or a decent-sized average check, they can make good money despite the low base salary.2/14/2013 11:40:58 AM |

Yeah, it has the following inputs: - Amount of football game complete - Is beer left open and unoccupied - Have I been drinking - Do I want to drink more - Will bragging troll people into being very angry
When game completion >50%, beer is left open, I have been drinking, I do want to drink more, and bragging will troll people into being very angry (always true, should probably remove to optimize) then I drink beer and brag about it2/14/2013 11:46:08 AM |

poast up the good job let the people decide.
every good job i've ever had has had a exclusivity clause...

I definitely tip better based on duration of stay versus cost of the meal. Just due to them not able to get another table while I'm busy occupying one of their tables.
I'm glad when they have added gratuity due to party size the checks are more commonly saying "Add'l Tip" instead of just "Tip". 2/14/2013 11:49:57 AM |

Depends on whether or not that's enforced though. I'd say the majority of those are in place to keep someone from holding down 2 jobs in the same industry, or to keep on-call availability open. In a lot of cases if someone wanted a part-time job waiting tables or tending bar that didn't infringe on the normal work hours and didn't cause the employee to be so tired that their performance suffers, it wouldn't be a big deal.
Depends on the boss and their interpretation of the rulebook, basically.2/14/2013 12:14:53 PM |

lol i know i'm just saying most big boy jobs don't like you working nights and weekends cause they feel like your performance will suffer at your primary job.
