I see people "smoking" them all the time in bars, restaurants, in buildings, and on the metro. Doesn't bother me at all. Thoughts?

Wait, what. This is bonkers. They don't even produce smoke, there's no feasible health risk. The only thing that could be deemed offensive is the SIGHT of people smoking, which has no more validity to regulation than offensive cologne or not liking people with exposed muffin-tops.

They should ban any artificial chemical emissions from a person that aren't for the purpose of entertaining 2 or more other people.

And there should be an absolute ban on emissions that are toxic unless otherwise approved.

Who wants to be eating, then have someones fake smoke blow across their face? That's like if i went up to someone and burped in their mouth while they were chewing their food.

I've never smelled an e-cig. The most I've ever seen is a very fine vapor mist that dissipates before it gets 2 inches from the "smoker's" mouth.

They never bothered me, but then a pair of dudes came in my store using some shit that smelled just like pancake syrup. It was an incredibly obnoxious smell.

I wouldn't ban them, but I also wouldn't hesitate to ask someone to stop with some obnoxious flavor/scent near me.

Yes.

A co worker smoked a flavored one, that sat ~20' away from me. I have allergy issues maybe once a year, but i pretty much couldn't be anywhere near him if i had any type of allergy problem.

The work vehicle he was responsible for reeked of the scent, and we had top open his computer, which was also caked on the inside with residue from the stuff.

I've also been in a restaurant recently where someone was smoking one, and the pungent vapor would drift over to our table every so often.

I don't see why people think it's okay to blow any type of chemical out of their mouth that can drift towards someone else, especially when people are eating. I can see them being allowed outdoors or in specific ecig areas, but seems pretty obviously dumb to allow that type of thing where people eat. Of course, we don't need a gov. ban on this, companies should just have the sense to ban them in food areas. But i guess they are still "new" enough not to show up on policies yet.

from what I understand...the only thing that the smoker takes in is nicotine...the vapor is nothing more than water vapor.

also, fwiw I've heard that nicotine is not really harmful to an individual other than just causing an addiction...and that by smoking e-cigs it's the same as basically quitting because there isn't anything harmful being taken in...

that last part could also be directly from e-cig companies so it might be wrong

I should also get off the internet after drinking those strawberry bud light limes...those things are fucking delish!

I have a co-worker who smokes these at his desk sometimes. (At my workplace e-cigs are allowed anywhere, whereas actual cigarettes are allowed only in smoking lounges and certain conference rooms. I work on the Philip Morris campus btw.) I actually think the scent of the vapor is rather pleasant, but it's faint, and I'm sure depending on what "flavor" you use it could be offensive.

Personally I think banning them in public is dumb because it's such a negligible health risk. On the other hand, I can see someone who is overly concerned about any scents and/or legitimately allergic or asthmatic being up in arms. But they also get worked up over perfume, woodburning fireplaces, smoke from kitchens, etc., so it's just one more thing on the list.

And, for what it's worth, nicotine is actually kind of bad for you...like your heart and whatnot. But it's worth it.

I don't really know what precisely is in the 'smoke' exhaled by the user. My decision on treating them like standard cigarettes would really hinge on what's in it.

If its non carcinogenic, I don't give a damn, but I'd like to see the data before I let someone use it in my car or house or something.


I've pointed out the flavor someone was smoking from across the room before. So, it does linger to an extent. Does the flavor smell matter? If it is safe, I guess its no more obnoxious than 'too much perfume lady'.... If it ingrains itself into fabrics and shit, I can't say I would want it around me.

I have never been a smoker, but I have been around people who use e-cigs...Ithink your coworker was partaking in something other than an e-cig. Maybe the e-cig was a front for what he was doing when nobody was around?

Man...I remember my 5th grade teacher getting furious at us for pretending to smoke those during lunch. I think her father or grandfather had passed away from smoking. Looking back I can sympathize with her. In any case, you can actually reason with a 5th grader, but if you come up acting like a bitch you'll probably be treated as such. She got treated as such.

I use an ecig.

The chemical in them is propylene glycol, found in everything from smoke
machines to food preservatives to antifreeze. its labeled as non hazardous by the FDA.

The "vapor" is technically harmless, but certain flavors do have a certain scent to them. The scent probably comes from the flavoring, not the actual chemical. I think banning them in restaurants is a bit much...its not a scent thats anywhere close to "making your clothes smell" or even one that you could pick out unless you knew someone used an ecig. From every study ive seen, ecig second hand "smoke" which dissipates immediately, is completely harmless to those around. I dont use mine in public places out of respect for others, but i also dont think the scent is anywhere near the smell of lotions/perfumes.

Some ecigs use vegetable glycerin instead, but most are propylene glycol

Point it, it appears to be one of those compounds found in everything...even some bad things, but isnt THE chemical that makes them dangerous. I do think its a very common chemical in food
preservation, so we eat it quite alot
