Pics from his cell phone.

conservative opinion when a white guy has pictures with guns: look at the media with their scary gun scare tactics! why does anyone care? it's not illegal or anything! there is nothing scary about guns, the guy is just expressing his second amendment rights. the lamestream media is just using scary guns to scare you!

conservative opinion when a black guy has pictures with guns: obviously a criminal, definitely guilty.

Strange also that they move between "The black community needs to fix their problems with crime." and "The solution to crime is more guns." without linking the two, hmmm...

he was a worthless little pothead thug stoner, of the ilk you see hangin on the stoop skippin school, laying in gutters at protests, and skipping work blowing dope out of their cars complaining about the police "targeting" them

dope smokers are the scum of society

but picking up a joint and holding a gun doesnt mean you automatically are the aggressor in all future altercations. All these little kids you see working at mcdonalds and goin to school, college, skateboarding, etc have access to guns.

The problem is all you white liberals that grew up in Gastonia only concerned with your own lives dont realize that the couple of teenage robbers/thugs arent the only ones that have guns. Its just young blacks arent as ignorant as you think they are overall. And they act like thugs on FB and shit because its imagery they can project that all their little friends identify with but in reality they dont want no parts of an altercation or getting a record. Hell they arent even comfortable holding the shit in their hands or carrying it. Believe it or not, these kids posing on FB with guns and weed drinking underage do wind up completing collegiate degrees and going on to normal careers with a wife/husband and kids.

so basically just because he has a gun doesnt mean hes out jackin and no good. Theyre just young punks that havent matured mentally yet. Theres 40 year old men on FB perpetrating this stuff on FB and want no parts of that actual life style.

i'd be willing to bet there are 10s of 1000s of "dope smokers" who are more productive members of society than yourself. problably not trayvon, but that's just a stupid thing to say. not out of character, though.

edit: i finished reading your post, and it's all over the place. he's was a worthless druggie thug that was the scum of society who was scared to hold a gun and who would have gone to college and had a carreer and a wife and kids?

^^We don't have the same opinions about drug use, but amen to the rest of your post. An image -- a persona -- is not the same as a person's identity and is mostly irrelevant as a persuasive device. "Look at these pictures! There's a chance that he might have been a thug...and that he might have been violent...and that he might have been the aggressor in the altercation"

The defense contends that Trayvon Martin is guilty of the following:

1. Posing with a gun on facebook NOT with a "Don't Tread on Me" flag behind him

2. Smoking reefer in some place that's NOT his mother's minivan in the suburbs

3. Enjoying violent music that does NOT fantasize about the South rising again

4. Wearing a hoodie that does NOT have a college's initials on it

Why didn't Trayvon have his piece when he and Zimmerman got into it? Seems in retrospect that it might have done him some good.

they're both relevant. but a grown-man's police records that include violence is a little more relevant than a teenager's phone-pics of weed and a gun.

My whole issue is not that the pictures exonerate Zimmerman, it is more of the way the media spinned the whole situation when it occured.

Everytime the story came up the picture used to portray Trayvon as some innocent little boy that was murdered by some over zealous community watchman. When in reality the issue is somewhere in the middle.

Wow that's some seriously selective memory. Is it relevant that:

- his texts mentioned brawling?
- he had pics with a hand gun?

I can see the flipping of the bird being a little less relevant. Taken as a whole, these things seem absolutely material to the trial. I get the concern that the jury won't understand the cultural context that this stuff exists in. But so what?

^^^ It seems this happens more than I would like to believe.

The Brad Cooper trial was extremely douchey, but no one was arguing prosecutor misconduct because of that. AFAIK, they blocked evidence from the trial and prevented the defense from... defending their client. The jury made their decision based on the Google Maps search, not the neighborhood gossip.

If you're so worried about the jury being racist assholes that you don't want them to see the full case, then you shouldn't support the jury system.

As far as I'm concerned, justice has already been served in this case, with Zimmerman being arrested, and SYG not being used.

I don't really care how this plays out at this point.

He was 17 years-old. I don't think anybody had any illusions about him being an "innocent little boy." And, when somebody dies, we always use the most flattering representations of that person. This practice is changing a bit, as the Internet has made candid pictures more readily available...but no respectable news source is gonna use dead-kid-flipping-the-bird-like-a-jackass pics.

Furthermore, Fox News, the most watched cable news source, has covered this story precisely the way you seem to want it covered. And it's a little silly to criticize the reporting of other outlets: there was obviously a racial element at play and a pretty exciting 911 call to examine. Of course, the news in general does suck, but it's pretty telling if this story is where you choose to take your stand.

I will say that I'm surprised people are being so blasé about the gun/marijuana plant pics. I realize that the gun may not belong to him, or he might have had a permit or whatever. But, if not, that is regarded as a very serious crime, and it's really sad if that's just the kind of thing we expect because of the "cultural context." His parents were married at one time. His mother had him in her 30s, and she was gainfully employed his entire life. If he had been caught with this stuff, he would have gone to prison. That's insane, horrible, embarrassing...all around really, really not okay.

I don't think it's racist to expect young people from comfortable, nonviolent homes to avoid carrying illegal firearms.

I'm not suggesting he was a "bad" kid. I am saying that if this is a thing--kids carrying guns for no reason--I am not okay with it, and I'm surprised people are being so dismissive about it. The kids are going too far.
