It's a little buggy using iPhone to control Netflix. Freezes up and have to close out Netflix and restart. Works good to stream from browser I've been happy with that part.

So it connected to my Windows laptop just fine. Tested youtube and it was great, tested streaming from wral.com & abc.com and it was laggy, eventually froze, and I only got audio from both sites.

Tried to connect my linux laptop via the setup site, it says there is no chromecast on my network (fair enough, there is no linux support)

Tried to connect my Droid Razr Maxx via the app, it says there is no chromeccast on my network.

Not a positive experience so far

"Your Amazon.com order of "Google Chromecast HDMI..." has shipped!"

Should be here Tuesday, sweet! Hopefully that Netflix code isn't far behind it.

Itching for it.

http://gizmodo.com/aircast-turns-chromecast-into-an-android-airplay-1165893246

"Koushik Dutta has been working on stream-everything functionality for the Chromecast for a while, and now the first version of his new app Aircast is proving that it works. If you've got Aircast, all you have to do is play video from Google Drive, or Dropbox, or something stored locally, and pick Aircast in the share menu. It's that easy."

womp womp, google's not a fan of casting videos it cannot profit from: http://www.theverge.com/2013/8/25/4657202/google-blocks-chromecast-app-that-let-you-stream-own-videos

I'm still debating getting one, someone will have to see how hard it is to work around the OTA update

Getting mine via Google this week, the Google Play store says ships in 2-3 weeks if you want to order there.
https://play.google.com/store/devices/details?id=chromecast

^^ Also read the update.... not broken permanently:

Quote :
"Update: Google has responded to our request for comment, and any fears that the company may bar playback of local media appear to be unfounded. "We’re excited to bring more content to Chromecast and would like to support all types of apps, including those for local content," a spokesperson tells The Verge. Google notes that its Google Cast SDK is still in "early days" and may change significantly before an official release reaches developers.

Google says it aims "to provide a great experience for users and developers before making the SDK and additional apps more broadly available." Dutta has admitted that he reverse engineered the Google Cast protocol to make AllCast possible, but it seems he may have another chance to do things the proper way once a full-fledged SDK arrives. The company's full statement is below.

We’re excited to bring more content to Chromecast and would like to support all types of apps, including those for local content. It's still early days for the Google Cast SDK, which we just released in developer preview for early development and testing only. We expect that the SDK will continue to change before we launch out of developer preview, and want to provide a great experience for users and developers before making the SDK and additional apps more broadly available."

So I have a problem.

I have enough HDMI inputs on my receiver (HTPC, PS3, AppleTV, Wii, Chromecast, + 3 empty) and the receiver max resolution is 4k; but my 55" Sony Plasma only has a DVI input and maxes out at 1080i, and no, I'm not upgrading until this one dies, the picture is still beautiful.

Anyway, the problem is that while my receiver can upscale to 4k (or in my case, 1080i as needed), it cannot downscale when a device (say, the Chromecast) has a default resolution of 1080p when its resolution auto-detection fails. I can see it as it boots up and the resolution flashes between 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p ... and then it stays there and I have a blank screen.

Except for the video output not being correct, casting works like a charm for audio, and I have no issues with the HDMI input on my monitor.

Any suggestions on getting the Chromecast to set a lower resolution, or tips on tricking the auto-detection?

Thanks.

I've seen that issue come a few times in forums. It's sort of a known issue. From what I've seen, there's no fix for it currently. But it's something that they can remedy in an update by making a lower resolution the default and then letting you select a higher resolution if you want.

So I'd be surprised if they didn't resolve it soon with an update.

Would this thing be useful for tailgating?

Say i have a tv or display in my truck bed...could i essentially hook this up and run my laptop or even iphone to play streaming media via the watch espn app?

I have unlimited data so that wouldnt be an issue

as long as you have an HDMI port in whatever device you'd be using, I wouldn't see why not

For watch espn all you have to do is copy the url from the popup box and paste it in your main chrome browser window. I did it the other day, but it lags really bad

This is cool:

Cast To UPnP/DLNA for GMusic

I'm finding this Chromecast to be pretty slick.

played around with mine for a few days now. It's cool, worth the price. Biggest use for me is Youtube. I have a Youtube app on my BluRay player, but for whatever reason I can never log into it to play shit I've saved in my account. This works wonderfully for that.

Finally reached out to Amazon since I never got my Netflix code ... and a few hours later I have it in my email and get it applied.

A discount of $23.97 has been applied to your account.

Thanks Google for such a great deal!

Chromcast just arrived. I like using it with my tablet. Its nicely integrated.

I'd like a chromecast player on my computer, instead of opening a video in the browser and playing it that way.

it can't connect to my network

i turned off the 5Ghz and don't have AP isolation and its not working and the help menu doesn't provide me any other clues for how to make it work. I tried completely uninstalling chromecast and starting over and haven't had any luck

yeah fuck this shit, i don't have any kind of weird router setting or network configuration.

yep

Edit:
my friend with the same router said he had problems but knows how to fix it.

so assuming I get this setup correctly, it only casts browser tabs, right? I can't use this to watch a .mkv video on tv?

i don't have a free usb on the tv, so i was already using that

(so per googling you can play local .mkv files if you navigate to them in the browser, but the performance may not be great)

His trick didn't work, but I reset the router to factory settings and reinstalled my network adapter, and then reinstalled my network adapter again, and then it started working.

i hope that they improve the performance for local files, that would be awesome

Have you gone to the store and checked their stock? After that initial rush with netflix promo I've always seen them stocked at the Google display area.

nah, I checked the "store availability" on the website and it said shipping only (as in it's not available in the store). Other products show what stores they're in just fine. So I assumed they weren't available in the store any longer.

I have to run by there in a bit, I'll just stop in and check since you've seen them there.

Yeah, BB in crossroads had a bunch right at the entrance. Not sure why their website says they're only available via shipping. I got one last night, but couldn't get it to work with my phone. Gonna try setting it up with a laptop in a bit.

^ I don't want to use it for anything but watching football streams from chrome really. Got rid of cable a while back, just use a Roku mostly. But I wanted a way to get NFL streams to my tv without running a cable. If I can do that for $35, I'll be happy to be honest.

I run a pled media server. Someone told me I could use the gamepass channe to stream nil gamesl. But it's unavailable in the US. If I can get that to work using a vpn, I'll return the chrome cast. If anyone has experience with that, i'd be invested in hearing about it.
