$2 is fine.
When I delivered for Jimmy John's one of the frequent customers wouldn't tip and would always say they "needed money for bus fare".
Bitch why are you paying $9 for a sandwich and chips if you are broke 12/5/2013 2:14:03 PM |

I assume these delivery people get paid at least minimum wage right? Also do they have to pay for the gas to truck a $7 sandwhich half way across town. If so, why the fuck would you become a JJ delivery person? 12/5/2013 3:13:07 PM |

If delivery works anything like pizza delivery does, the delivery fee goes to the driver to cover "vehicle use & gas". at least thats how it worked when i delivered back about 7 years ago. 12/5/2013 4:26:04 PM |

I recently started working delivery at JJ, and from what I've seen so far, $2 is good, especially if it's just a sandwich or combo ($5-$10 order). If you're giving less than a dollar on an order, you're an asshole, and if you're giving less than $5 on a $50 order, you're an asshole.

NOPE. We don't get the delivery charge. That goes to the store. We just get our low hourly rate + 2.5% of our personal daily sales, and that's taxed. i.e. if you deliver $150 worth of sandwiches, and assume that's ~40 miles worth of driving, it's a measly 9 cents a mile.
But for those of you tipping with cash if you pay for food with a card, thank you, because those tips go straight to the driver.

Yes, we have to pay for gas et cetera ourselves, but the delivery range is only a few miles from the shop.12/5/2013 4:51:37 PM |

Completely understandable. JJ subs are actually pretty cheap relative to other subs, the normal subs are 4.75, and from what I've seen, the delivery fee is basically the rest of the dollar that tax doesn't take up (i.e. your total is 5.75).
Fortunately, there are enough people that do that the JJ I work at is understaffed, which was how I got the job
I mean I got because I'm awesome 12/5/2013 10:37:47 PM |

I've always viewed that if there is a delivery fee then its something your paying for and not a courtesy and shouldn't get a tip. Not saying I've never tipped but depends on the situation and the delivery fee. 12/5/2013 10:44:49 PM |

What about at Sonic? I never can figure that out.
I tip a buck to the guy that walks or skates 12 feet from the kitchen to bring me my jr. burgers but I don't have the first clue as to whether thats about right, no tip is required, or I am stiffing the guy. 12/6/2013 6:43:43 AM |

I worked at Sonic through high school and part of college. Tipping is expected, but I wouldn't tip a carhop who didn't at least come out to check on you once after bringing your food out.
If you watch what they're doing inside, most carhops do the expediting, take orders over the speaker, prepare drinks, and work the ice cream station. I honestly think they work pretty hard considering a lot of them do it all on inline skates. 12/6/2013 7:15:31 AM |

You know Jimmy John's is cheap as fuck, right?
So now that we have an actual JJ guy on here, I want to ask him how he feels about my tip...
I get the Vita w/chips...comes out to $7.50. JJ is 5 or 6 blocks from my office. Delivery guy rides his bike. I round off to $9.00. Is that acceptable? He's not paying for gas, he's not going that far...but sometimes I feel like I should give him $2 because he's just going all this way for one fucking sandwich.12/6/2013 7:21:59 AM |

I would usually order two sandwiches and a drink and throw on a cookie or two maybe some chips to get it close to 15 then give them a 20. I no longer live near a JJ though which makes me sad 12/6/2013 8:23:16 AM |

One question sir. Why didn't you call the fire department first? (That commercial is slightly less annoying than the one with police sirens, but I am also of the opinion that any commercial that has sirens should be banned from the radio, it's obnoxious while driving)
And synapse, where do you work? To be honest, I doubt it - as I said prior, $2 is a pretty good tip on a single sandwich. People that don't tip might get a funny look, but I also try to not look at the number on the receipt until I/the person leaves to avoid reaction faces

Yeah JJ has defintely replaced subway as my budget sandwich place. Now that we're here, got a question. My boys got into a drunk argument, as most arguments start, as to what makes a sandwich:
The meat or the bread
I say bread.
Now you go. 12/6/2013 1:13:22 PM |
