I never understood this mentality. Why would people be ok buying 100 shares of a $10 stock but not 1 share of a $1,000 stock?

It is very hard to get past the mentality of thinking about possible gains for a lot of people. Probably one of the hardest concepts is just to look at % return rather than dollar amounts. We all have fallen into that trap at one point or another. People think oh I bought 1 share at $1000 dollars and its at $1100 now I only make 100 bucks rather than I made 10% which is pretty good. Instead its easier to think hey I'll buy 100 shares of a $10 stock and it only went up 1 dollar and I made... oh wait

^^^ haha, if someone says "low priced stocks", I just assume they're talking P/E.

^^ really? I never heard of anyone thinking like that, other than "oh, cool, I made $____ by day trading today."

^^ The only time i can think of share price being a valid concern is when BRK.B used to cost a ton. A beginning investor could have not had enough for even 1 share back then, or it could be an inordinately large position for the size of their portfolio.

Since BRK.B's 50:1 split, though, I can't think of a stock that is pricy enough to be a factor. The priciest stocks nowadays (that don't offer multiple share classes, like BRK) are what, $1000ish? (and with price pullback, special dividends, GOOG/GOOGL split, etc, there's one less in that range).

$1000 shouldn't be a barrier. If you can't put together $1000 per buy, you should generally wait until you can, so you don't get killed by brokerage fees...and if you can't scrape up $1000 to invest at least every couple of months, I would say that you would likely be better served by buying into automatic monthly buy-ins to mutual funds in whatever amount you can afford.

well, i can now, post-50:1 split!

I have 65 shares of it, actually. I'd buy more, but I feel like there might be a buying opportunity whenever Buffett steps down, and it can't be but so much longer.

been playing GTAT since 2011, I still think its got plenty of room to run. Im targeting 50 PPS in 2 years. The sapphire business is going to be huge but they have their hands in tons of other tech, especially regarding solar.

"Inovio Pharmaceuticals Inc (NYSEMKT:INO) tumbled 9.89% after news that it has proposed a reverse stock split of its common stock to a ratio not less than one-for-two and not greater than one-for-four in a notice for its annual meeting of stockholders to be held on May 22.

The decline appeared after a Seeking Alpha blog claimed “Documents show that Proactive has been paying writers to write bullish articles on Inovio” (among others). The report identified clear indications of undisclosed promotions on Inovio Pharmaceuticals (INO), using the Proactive Group, an IR firm that is listed as a partner of The Dream Team Group. So has this split happened and that's why it's $2.14 and falling, or is it just $2.14 and falling?

A reverse split is bad. Its an attempt to keep stock price higher to stay on NYSE. worse case is they don't reverse split and the stock gets demoted to OTCBB, I think.

INO is up this morning after they announced purchase of some new Chinese technology (and corresponding seeking alpha article). Tempted to buy back in but with the split looming, I don't know.

Noob question. Where do shares come from? That is...can a company decides to put more shares out or is it a fixed number during the IPO?

There is a fixed amount during an IPO but the company can choose to release more.

Market cap (that is the value of the company) / number of shares released on the market = stock price.

so as you can see, if they do release more later, it would have a negative impact on the price, which could cause people to sell, further lowering the price.

Another noob question. Can there be a situation where a buyer wants to buy but the seller does not sell? What I mean is when I go to my trading platform and want to buy some shares...I press a button magic happens and I get those shares. Are those shares on standby or something?

that is where volume comes into play. with stocks such as INO, which have few shares and low volume, you may not be able to find someone out there willing to trade. Typically with large volume stocks you'll always get someone willing to sell.

The fuck? They have 240 million shares outstanding with a current average daily volume of 5.72 million shares exchanged. The bid/ask spreads are virtually nil on this stock.
