I've been trying to use LogMeIn, but the performance is so poor that it's not useful for anything. I've got RR Turbo at home, and pretty good internet at the office, but even with turning the graphics way down it still had terrible lag and frame rate.

If I setup a VPN and use RDP, will that give me better performance? I'm assuming the LogMeIn competitors will offer similar performance (Splashtop, TeamViewer, etc...)?

I wish Microsoft didn't kill fetch and remote control in Skydrive, that worked fine

What are you trying to do exactly? If you are wanting to stream video or play a game or something, you're going to need something more heavy duty like PCoIP. If you are just wanting to browse the web, support family remotely or something like that, Teamviewer works great.

I would love to be able to use Photoshop Lightroom or watch video.

Splashtop had better video streaming performance than RDP, LMI, or TV when I was using it on my tablet. Wasn't there an improvement with Server 2012 and/or Windows 7 with RDP?

^That's true, RDP8 might help some.

I don't know about Lightroom, but watching video isn't a realistic expectation though.

Look around the black-hat forums for RATs you can put on your computer, then try one out.

If I setup a VPN I could watch movies by accessing the files that way. Would RDP be faster than logmein for trying Lightfoot?

Actually, I just realized I don't have Windows Pro on the home computer so I guess RDP isn't an option

Thanks for the heads up there guys. Got the following notification when I logged in today.
Quote :
"Soon LogMeIn Free will no longer be available.

To continue using remote access, you’ll need to purchase an account subscription of LogMeIn Pro. As a loyal user, you’re entitled to discounted introductory pricing, with packages starting at $49/year for two computers.* Your new account includes our signature remote access with premium features like remote printing, file transfer and cloud data access, plus desktop and mobile apps to improve your experience.
Please note: If you do not take action, the Free computers highlighted in your account will become inaccessible on 1/28/2014. Only 7 days left!"

Quote :
"After ten years, LogMeIn’s free remote access product, LogMeIn Free, is going away. We will be unifying our portfolio of free and premium remote access products into a single offering. This product will be a paid-only offering, and it will offer what we believe to be the best premium desktop, cloud and mobile access experience available on the market today. We will be notifying those impacted by the change in the coming days and weeks. In the meantime, we wanted to take a minute to explain the change and help users of LogMeIn’s access products better understand what this means for them.

Starting in January, we will gradually migrate users of LogMeIn-branded remote access offerings and Ignition-branded remote access offerings to a single, premium access product. Please note that once you log into your account there is a seven day window to upgrade. Subscriptions will include LogMeIn’s signature remote access to two or more computers, premium mobile apps for Android and iOS, and native Mac and Windows desktop apps. Additionally, all users who purchase a subscription to LogMeIn Pro will be upgraded to a premium remote access experience, with capabilities that include integration with popular cloud sync and share products like Cubby, Dropbox, Box, Google Drive and SkyDrive, the ability to manage and transfer cloud and local files, remote printing and more.

It’s worth noting that Central customers will not be impacted by this change (please see FAQ). In addition, this change does not impact other freemium products in our broader portfolio, like join.me and Cubby."

What's your upload on Turbo? If you're at like 5mbps you're limited by that. The "turbo" doesn't matter as it's your down stream speed. When I switched to 10mbps upload on Comcast remoting home was a much more pleasant experience.

I really like Splashtop for my phone or tablet but usually for PC to PC I just use RDP through an SSH tunnel. At 10mbps my home upload is fast enough for it to be nice and smooth. If it's Windows obviously.

Wow ... what a clusterf@#$.

So long, Logmein, my infrequent use of you over the years was nice.

Onto Teamviewer.

Splashtop requires yearly subscription for Anywhere Access, boo.

The old Splashtop and Splashtop HD had the one time purchase fee. The newer version (Splashtop 2) is free to download but requires a monthly or yearly subscription for computers outside of your local network. Quality seems to be a bit better than the original but isn't worth the premium. I just use PhoneMyPC for my home computer and the Microsoft remote desktop app for the computer at work.

As for logmein, I've already installed TeamViewer and the Chrome Remote Desktop extension which seem to be more than enough. We have Logmein Central at work but I may switch that just for the hell of it.

haha. Forgot about this. From when the started limiting the free accounts to only 10 computers last March. obamacare all over again.

Yup, used Logmein to install Teamviewer on a couple machines, classic.

TV is not my favorite interface, but it gets the job done and IS snappy. Oh, and hello Android app, you're actually pretty nice to use.

If I was only concerned with my computers I'd just OpenVPN and RDP/VNC ... but that does nothing for needing a minimal effort tool to help the in-laws and family.

Thanks, TeamViewer.

video performance with RDP in Win8/Server08/2012 is awesome. Instead of rendering remotely and pushing pixels over the network, it passes the directx handle to the local device and streams the video data across the pipe, rendering on the local client.

Works great, uses a fraction of the bandwidth, and by itself is worth upgrading to Pro on both end.

yeah, i don't use it everyday, but I'm realizing that paying the $100 to upgrade to Win 8 Pro is the solution.

For my VPN I'm using LogMeIn Hamachi because its pretty simple and I don't know shit about networking. Are there any other easy solutions I should be looking at?

I pretty much exclusively use RDP unless it's from a mobil device like my phone or tablet then I use Splashtop which is still free for me.

^^In my experience, the grace period starts when you actually log into LogMeIn and lasts for seven days; your accounts must have been dormant.

guess you're just lucky, then...you're the exception, not the rule

logmein can suck a fat one, teamviewer is faster for me, and less problematic (i occasionally had weird keyboard/mouse issues with logmein)

the "free sponsored session" popup is more annoying than i would have thought, but not bad enough to pay for TV

^^My sole complaint with TV is that when I disconnect from a computer it logs the user back out. I used to use LMI to give my kids access at certain times and when I ended the session, they could still be logged in, because I don't want to give them my password. Other then that I really like using it.

are you having that problem on more than one computer? 2 of the computers i have TV on have multiple accounts and it doesn't do that with either of them
