I thought when a home was framed to that point it was pretty much as sturdy as it was going to be. Was there any construction left that would have prevented this? [Edited on January 11, 2014 at 10:13 PM. Reason : l]

i would guess with the frame being open like (no windows/doors/etc that winds whipping through the structure could set up some pretty strong forces... (just guessing)
1/11/2014 10:51:38 PM
There is still a lot to add that would give that structure stability.

Gives you faith in modern construction. When that fell down it looked like a bunch of lightweight sticks and particle board.

THAT...WAS...FUCKING....AWESOME.Brings me back to my static and dynamic classes at good ole NCSU. NC State Engineering School!!!!

saw that yesterday and I think I'm gonna have to grab a soundbite of that use it for when texts come in

Resonance through the open framing would be my guess

I enjoy the indignant-sounding "holy shit" at the end.

Where was this in Raleigh?

Brier Creek

Good thing is they probably can reuse most of the wood. That said, i would not want to live in them still, If they cant hold up like that, serious integrity questions have to be asked.

Lionheart I had the same idea... Not sure of the best way to capture the audio. If you do will you send it to me or post it here?

Unfortunately, homes and buildings aren't built like they used to be. Ever wonder why houses/buildings are built a lot faster than they used to be?A lot of the walls, roof struts, etc.. come premanufactured and they just slap them together real quick...
1/12/2014 11:50:19 AM
pre-manufactured trusses and walls are going to be better quality than other stick built trusses and walls

New Technology is allowed to circumvent building code, dintyano?

"OH NO, LOOK AT THAT!" is now my text sound.

wonder where in brier creek?
1/12/2014 2:36:31 PM
The neighborhood was called the Exchange at Brier CreekHere's the full video on CNN. You can see how shit got real after the "house" fell. That's how it was in Cary. Complete white out by the rain/wind combination. Winds were coming from different directions too. It was really swirling at my house. 5 of my neighbors lost either shingles, or metal siding/roofing.http://www.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/video/us/2014/01/12/raw-nc-storm-condo-collapse.ed-braz-wildlife-photographer.html

1/12/2014 6:21:45 PM
You want me to tell you what caused this??? 90mph wind Nothing to do with "quality"
1/12/2014 6:47:40 PM
They'll make an insurance claim to recoup some money and they'll probably just scrap/landfill most of that, unless the contractor really wants to spend time demo'ing everything just to save a few bucks. And it looked like that building was structurally complete and should have stood.
1/13/2014 12:42:04 PM
I'm thinking some of those lower level walls should have have plywood both sides for shear, but it may have just been poorly timed framing with the wind conditions
1/13/2014 1:28:24 PM
Has anyone said "Thanks Obama" yet? Because fuck that guy
