I thought when a home was framed to that point it was pretty much as sturdy as it was going to be. Was there any construction left that would have prevented this?

i would guess with the frame being open like (no windows/doors/etc that winds whipping through the structure could set up some pretty strong forces... (just guessing) 1/11/2014 10:51:38 PM |

There is still a lot to add that would give that structure stability. 1/11/2014 10:58:29 PM |

Gives you faith in modern construction. When that fell down it looked like a bunch of lightweight sticks and particle board. 1/12/2014 12:25:59 AM |

Its kind of like those bookshelves you get a big lots or Walmart, they have absolutely no sideways strength until you nail that big piece of cardboard on the back which keeps it from moving back and forth.
It looks like this structure did not even have the sheathing added yet, so it might have had enough strength to stand up, but not to sideways wind. The sheathing and drywall give it a lot more strength when its done.1/12/2014 9:31:21 AM |

Good thing is they probably can reuse most of the wood.
That said, i would not want to live in them still, If they cant hold up like that, serious integrity questions have to be asked. 1/12/2014 10:49:05 AM |

Unfortunately, homes and buildings aren't built like they used to be. Ever wonder why houses/buildings are built a lot faster than they used to be?
A lot of the walls, roof struts, etc.. come premanufactured and they just slap them together real quick... 1/12/2014 11:50:19 AM |

The neighborhood was called the Exchange at Brier Creek
Here's the full video on CNN. You can see how shit got real after the "house" fell. That's how it was in Cary. Complete white out by the rain/wind combination. Winds were coming from different directions too. It was really swirling at my house. 5 of my neighbors lost either shingles, or metal siding/roofing.

They'll make an insurance claim to recoup some money and they'll probably just scrap/landfill most of that, unless the contractor really wants to spend time demo'ing everything just to save a few bucks.
And it looked like that building was structurally complete and should have stood. 1/13/2014 12:42:04 PM |

I'm thinking some of those lower level walls should have have plywood both sides for shear, but it may have just been poorly timed framing with the wind conditions 1/13/2014 1:28:24 PM |
