^ the site you're looking for is:

http://nissanroadracing.com

Example:
This guy tracks his car regularly (every couple of months, if not more often). He has an SR20, built bottom end, stock valvetrain with mild cams, stock coated exh mani, Greddy intake mani, bigger fuel pump and injectors, and a GT2871R. It makes 400hp/323tq on a ROM tune and he's been taking it to the track for 4 or 5 years without any major engine problems. Stock trans (at least for a long time, he might've upgraded by now), all OEM Nissan parts in rear end (but a mix-n-match from different models), etc.

A few others I can think of off the top of my head...

This guy has a built KA24 with an intercooler-less GT35R (iirc) setup for quick spool on small/auto-x courses.

And the PDM coupe/hatch twins are sweet too

Oh, and these two guys both live in Raleigh, both have LS-powered S13s, and both go to track events fairly regularly.

jawhitak, it’s good to see them out there (and I undoubtedly suffer from sampling bias), just interesting that I may have seen maybe 3 of them on track out of literally hundreds of BMWs, Porsches, Corvettes and even Mustangs. Of course one can modify anything to be fast or durable on track... Alas, looks like my own biases has me leaning towards a stupid e30 turbo (which most likely wouldn’t be all that track worthy in any case). Regardless, I love seeing almost any car on track, and the culture of cheap/sensible modifications that the 240 crowd often has is nice to see... Even though there’s plenty of mods that don’t fit either of those descriptions amongst the 240 people also lol.

I remember back in the day, their reputation was that of a very good chassis, among best in class, hamstrung by a mediocre engine.

I think maybe there aren't too many of them at track days because it's rare to find one that isn't built for drifting and/or all fucked up nowadays, either due to a combination of catastrophic ricing and getting halfway into a project and running out of money, etc.

Remy, that pile of shiny parts looks nice. What turbo did you end up getting? 2860? 2871? godspeed equivalent?

And what kind of mani did you order? Those stock manifolds are actually supposed to be better for quicker spool than most tubular types, plus they flow well enough to break 400hp even with the T2 flange. If you got a tubular one, definitely exhaust wrap it to mimic the heat retention characteristics of the stock cast manifold.

Heyy a random thread with a pic of my car in it!

S13 is a pretty flexy chassis. Problems I have come across after tracking it are:

Rear wheel bearings suck once you switch to R-comps
Fuel tank hangs way far over the back wheels and the baffle inside likes to break off

My own problems are I was suckerd into buying shit suspension because it was all I could afford, and to get what I want i need to spend some $ and don't feel like it. Most cars you can buy decent stuff (read, Bilsteins/konis) and mount right up. Not really so on s13/14 without some custom stuff. $1500 or so for 8611 konis after custom housings, camber plates, ect. I also managed to totally bugger up my brakes and have a pedal that basically acts like a on-off switch. Master is the wrong size to work with the pedal ratio and brake pads.

Jay I got the twisted motion 2871r
It's a knockoff

I was going to stick with the stock manifold but I was ordering an exhaust gasket and saw a cheap tubular manifold (including gasket). Read about the potential for cracking..i will definitely hold onto the stock manifold. ordered some heat wrap too
maybe i should just use the gasket and put the manifold up on craigslist..?

Some crack, some don't. Not a bad idea to weld a couple braces from the head flange to the turbo flange if you get a chance. Also not a bad idea to keep that stock manifold in case you ever want to switch to an external wastegate like so

It was running for a while with the 2871r and external gate, then I cracked the oil pan in June, aaaaaand it's been on jack stands since then.

I stopped caring about the car because I got preoccupied with buying a motorcycle.

And then I stopped caring about the bike because I got preoccupied with buying a '30 Ford.

So basically I have a bunch of shit and none of it works and I'm lazy as hell.

manifold came in and we tried getting the turbo back into the car yesterday..
of course when we started to work it started pouring...so we made a little makeshift garage so we could get a little work done.

fitting the larger turbo with new manifold was not easy..eventually we got it into place but the oil feed line fitting going to the block is the wrong thread pitch. Here we are trying to get it into place:

got it in place but i still need to connect the oil feed line and piping, etc.

when trying to hang the exhaust we realized that the "s13 turbo back exhaust" off of ebay doesnt even come close to fitting. the elbow is short causing the long part of the down pipe to run straight into the floorboard. Hopefully i can take the down pipe to henrys and they can extend the short side by 1.5inches or so. ...cxracing parts on ebay..dont buy em

Turbo/manifold are in. All lines connected and exhaust is hung. I took the downpipe to meineke and had them extend it by one inch. Fit perfectly after that and exhaust sits nice and even with the frame rails.
Today I need to reroute the hotpipe and I should be ready to start it.

Now I was just going to ride around like this for a little while but I really want to take advantage of the 2871
So I Ordered deatshwerks injectors and a z32 maf. I also ordered nistune
Also bought a few hours of dyno time at phantasm. (Went by there yesterday to watch some cars during their dyno day thing..that's what the cardboard is)

Nope, never messed with em. I do, however, have experience in sending an ECU off for a ROM tune, hooking it in, and being fine.

JWT and RS Enthalpy both have solid ROM tunes for common turbo/injector/MAF setups on SR20s. I've used ECUs flashed by both companies and have never had a problem. In fact, there were a few serious road race guys on NRR that dyno'd their cars with JWT and Enthalpy tunes to check the datalogs for issues. Their only real "complaint" is that the tunes are generally a bit conservative (rich AFRs), which makes sense since they're intended for street use as well as track use.

If you're dead set on having the ability to tune your own ECU and if Nistune doesn't work out for you, remember that MegaSquirt also offers a plug-n-play MS3 standalone for SR20s too. Two of my housemates used MegaSquirt, as well as a couple other friends. I've never heard any complaints about it. And if you ever want a top-notch tune for it, National Speed in Wilmington has the software to tune MS ECUs (though they can probably do Nistune as well).

i was going to go with a rom tune but if i upgrade any other parts after the tune.. the additional $150 re-flash would bring the total over what i would spend on nistune or nistronic. Im also looking forward to being able to switch maps and log runs and whatnot. I will look into megasquirt..havent read too much about it.

So i got the car back on the ground today started it up and drove it around. Everything seems to be working smoothly..tomorrow i put in the larger injectors and maf.
