No. I never said that. That's another assumption on your part that you've made from a few posts, where I really haven't said anything like that. For the most part, I bet wewould agree on almost all aspects of this. I'm just talking specifically about soda, man, and I'm basically playing devil's advocate to your position.

(and the fact that you keep calling names and saying things like "i thought you were smarter but i guess not", could lead me to make the assumption that you think you're smarter and superior to anyone who doesn't agree with you, and that gives you the right to be mean to them and try to insult them and make them feel bad about themselves)

So you agree that nothing will change if this happens, right? Poor people will still be poor and nothing about their lives or their situations will improve by this measure. Glad we cleared that up.

Again, i wasn't talking to you.

I'm not subhumanizing the poor. Perphaps that is accurate for some people in this thread. Again, you don't know anything about me or how I grew up, yet you're choosing to make this personal.

Anyways, I'm bowing out. This is silly, people comparing paying teachers to giving people food stamps for soda. and I feel like I've been totally misrepresented. and the name-calling shit is ridiculous and childish.

there is an ocean of empathy between "wanting poor people to make better/healthier choices" and "ban soda stamps so poor people have to pay for their own vices !!1"

i'm not quite sure how to articulate the difference any better.

Has any program reduced poverty? Ever?

That's not the goal. The goal is to create an underclass that we can feel good about blaming. Works fine.

I do know people who choose to buy homeless food or a meal to ensure their money isn't going to alcohol and drugs.
Plus your example is invalid because where as a samaritan gives money to a homeless person by choice knowing that it may go to
booze, my money going to Soda is involuntary.

Again, back to the subhuman thing. You think you're better than poor people so you want to try and control them and punish them. You even admit that this idea won't work, yet you still support it, just because you get off on the very thought of punishing the poor.

You're a teacher, right?

I'll take an iPhone 5. It's nicer than the one I have. I could then give mine to my cousin who only has a land-line in his trailer. He and his four kids could share it and play candy crush. (btw, every time you tell a joke about buying me an iPhone 5, it's even funnier than the last time.)

Minimum wage workers can afford I
iPhones if they save long enough, both of you can easily afford an iPhone 5 if you want it, having some shitty phone because you choose to doesn't give you street cred.

This should be obvious to any person.

90% of my students have iPhones and could probably qualify for food stamps and I still wouldn't trade places with them either.

Of course I could afford a new iPhone right now, I just choose to spend my money on vacations and other shit instead.

Having a iPhone isn't really a good barometer of one's wealth or station in life. It's a fucking cell phone.

I wouldn't trade places with them either,as I realize that I'm pretty fortunate to be in the position that I'm currently in. I'm supportive of my tax payer dollars going to people less fortunate than me. I believe that one of the primary roles of government should be to help it's less fortunate citizens and those that fall on hard times. That's why i support programs like welfare and food stamps. I also don't view fat people or cargo-short wearing people as subhuman, nor do i criticize people who wear socks that are different colors than their trousers. And i accept that people who have otterboxes on their iphone are just trying to be responsible and to keep their fancy phone in working condition, because they don't want to shell out money to replace a cracked screen. I don't think I'm better than them because I think otterboxes are a little tacky.

I don't much care whether sodas are banned or not, because here are the things that will happen regardless:

1) Most people on food stamps have more than zero money, and money is fungible, so if they really want soda they'll get it regardless (having used food stamps to pay for something else, for example)
2) We're all on the same page about sodas being unhealthy, but that's about where it ends. To me, the idea of a bunch of wannabe nutritionists and doctors arguing about whether juice and a gazillion other things should join the list of banned foods...well, it seems like a waste of everybody's time.
3) Food stamps are a tiny portion of the budget. So tiny that even their contribution to obesity via soda guzzling poor people can't be too big.

So yeah. If you can ban it relatively easily, knock yourself out. But if it costs more than $randolphcounty in political capital, maybe look elsewhere

^^^^ That's pretty much it. I think that food stamps should be run like WIC, where it's not by exception--types of foods have to be specifically approved. Cereal, milk, eggs, etc...not soda, etc...and you're damn right I think I should have a say in it, because it's my fucking money we're spending.

That said, it won't accomplish all that much. Many/most poor people are going to find a way to be poor, waste money, eat shitty foods, and fuck away their money and health and alcohol and cigarettes no matter what we do...and it won't accomplish that much fiscally, either. This is the right thing to do, but it's not a high priority and certainly not worth much political capital.

No, it's NOT the right thing to do. Everyone in this thread has already admitted this isn't going to accomplish jack shit. The sole purpose of this is to shame poor people. It's absolutely no different than when Repubs in FL wasted all that time and money drug testing welfare recipients. It didn't work either. I know that it's the sole mission for some people in life to go out of their way to invent new forms of punishment and scapegoat the everliving fuck out of the poor, but Jesus Christ, enough already.

How much per month are you paying for your cell phone plan? If you're start with "don't know exactly, because family plans have...", then it's too much. They just hid it from you.

You can buy an Android phone for $90 by now. I say Android, because there are plenty of handsets which are of debatable smartness. I am completely sure that, no matter what plan you have, the cost of the airtime dwarfs what it would cost you to get a smart phone.

What I'm saying is that your choice to "not get an iPhone" isn't being thrifty, you're just full of yourself. It's not really being anything. It's a style selection. If some dude has a quad core Galaxy or iPhone 5 which they plan to replace next year, then sure. They're splurging on it.

But otherwise, this test to evaluate phone service thriftiness isn't even correct to begin with.

Yes, it does. You (and others in this thread; the general 'you') don't like soda and wish to prevent others from purchasing it with SNAP.

I'm not saying dislike of soda is baseless, but it's largely secondary when you start using "It's my money" to justify strings attached to benefits.

I'm about 30 years old, so no I'm not on a damn 'family plan'. I bought my iPhone 4S when I signed up for a contract back in 2012, and my contract has been up for a few months actually. As I stated before, I could go out this afternoon and buy a new iPhone on the spot, but I'm choosing to wait until the next one comes out. This choice is not a reflection of my wealth or station in life. Call me cheap if you want, but I don't really care.

Smart phones are ubiquitous. They're like automobiles and televisions. 90% of people have them these days, so it's fucking dumb to assume someone is rich or poor, good or terrible with money, hard working or lazy, etc, because they have a popular cell phone. It's lazy rhetoric to attack someone on welfare who has an iPhone 5. Quit buying into the rich person persecution complex the right is trying to spin. Poor people don't have it better than I do for having the latest model of an iPhone- they're still fucking poor and can't afford housing, retirement, investments, savings, vacations, etc.

I don't get a say either. If I did, my federal tax dollars certainly wouldn't go to pay for pork projects I don't approve of.
