^^it doesn't fit under the Viper's hood. And I'll be damned if they ruin the styling to accommodate the Hellcat engine.

Is it bad I kinda like the sound of ups trucks?

God I really wish they would put a manual in the 4 door. I don't understand how it could cost soo much to put a trans that allready fits the engine and the chassis into the car?

Literally the only thing they would need is a driveshaft that would be a new part.

"Dodge Viper to out-Hell the Hellcat with supercharged V10?

Although the Hellcat's engine reportedly won't fit under the Viper's hood, SRT is now rumoured to have another trick up its sleeve: supercharge the existing V10. According to the Pentastar performance enthusiasts at allpar.com, Chrysler has already taken delivery of the first such prototype engines so that it can begin the process of fitting it into an upgraded Viper."

"According to K&N's dyno results, the Challenger SRT Hellcat puts down 635 hpand 591 lb-ft of torque at the rear wheels. Assuming a 12-percent drivetrain loss (automatics are getting more efficient each year), that means the Hellcat puts out about 722 hp at the crank. As for torque, well, the Hellcat makes more than advertised there as well -- 672-lb-ft."

Quote :
"The Hellcat is the fastest thing K&N had ever strapped to its dyno. The speedo stopped reading at 202 mph, but the car kept accelerating to above 225 mph when it over-sped the dyno."

Remember, the Hellcat runs a water-air intercooler. If the air temperature in the manifold is cooler when running on the chassis dyno than when the engine is certified on an engine dyno, it's going to be easier to make more horsepower.

Wonder how easy it will be to tune these cars. There are 6 year old CTS-Vs making 900+ rwhp.

Buy car... get a propper set of tires... learn to drive.. enjoy...

Stop getting confused on how your 1800lb Vw can't put 250 to the ground without erupting the tires

But if Dodge is going to sell a glorified drag car it should come with some nice, phat, sticky rubber. If you get a chance go look at the wheels and tires on a Z28 Camaro if you want to see what a proper tire setup looks like.

Can't embed facebook video, but now I know why they didn't put real tires on it. It is a Dodge after all.

I've been following this thread

http://www.challengertalk.com/forums/f290/here-facts-10-48-run-310578/

2 hellcats go to the track, identical tires. 1 runs 11.05 @126 (Which is close to what it should run at its weight and rated power). Other somehow runs 10.46 @133.....*cough spray cough*

Seems like its RPM triggered and hits hard in 2nd gear. But the Dodge guys think one Hellcat is half a second a 7 mph faster than another...SURE.

Ignoring that he jumped the start and then backed off at the wrong moment, it doesn't really matter who's driving the Hellcat. AWD with one gear against RWD with gear shifts? Apples to Oranges comparison.

^ Impressive nonetheless. Also, while I'm more into hp than torque, torque is good in a drag race from a dig, and electric motors make maximum torque down low, and the AWD is able to put it down. On top of all that, I bet the Tesla has enough of an advantage in rotational inertia over a conventional drivetrain to make a difference (on top of no time lost shifting, etc).

It is apples to oranges, but saying "it's fast because it's electric/direct drive/AWD" is kinda like poo-pooing something by saying "it's fast because it runs a [power adder]." Yeah no shit. Sounds good to me.

Both are bad ass, though.

____________

^^^^^

I could buy a few tenths worth of E.T. based on tire pressures, or maybe shock/spring rates if they're modded, or even one not being a very good launch (not in terms of RT, but in terms of 60'). 7 mph worth of trap speed is a pretty good indicator of a power difference, though. That's pretty tough to reconcile, with a well-tucked bottle feeding system being top of the list of suspicions, haha.

Oh I think the Tesla is pretty sweet, but I think comparing AWD to RWD is for the most part meaningless. Do it again from a roll at 60 and the opposite will most likely happen.

i mean the guy spun the first 1/8th mile... so yes.. if you compare kinda rich yuppy moron to really rich green yuppy moron... the really rich green yuppie moron will win.

Plus the faster the Tesla goes the less power it makes.

no, the faster it goes the less torque it makes. power remains constant.

I thought electric motors still had some observable power 'curve'

[/semantics]

[Edited on January 21, 2015 at 4:25 PM. Reason : wait, no, torque is nearly constant, HP increases with rpm]

[Edited on January 21, 2015 at 4:25 PM. Reason : at least for an AC motor, right? shit]

It all depends on the motor, the control and the heat capacity of both.

Technically a 400kw motor should make 400kw as long as the motor is timed right which theoretically could be down to nearly 0 rpm meaning nearly infinite torque... The problem with that is it breaks everything including the motors own armature shaft so they typically limit torque until they can let it fly free and then it will taper off once the system gets to maximum voltage and amperage. Then kW & hp will stay relatively constant accept for the rotational power lost due to increased rotational acceleration at the higher rpm.

That being said infinite torque really isn't possible but they can make enough torque to break shit and any curve you see on the power figure is generated by the motor controller not they physical system.

^ jackass

TLDNR:

Any gas style curve is simulated by a motor controller.

The torque is artificially limited at first or power would remain almost flat.

as a side note,

"wait, no, torque is nearly constant, HP increases with rpm"

is what most people find desirable in a gasoline car engine.

Yeah ...an un-controlled electric motor should have a hp plateau at the rated hp for 95% of its functional rpm.
and the torque should look asymptotic.
