just rename 8.1 9, numbering problem solved

as long as it's more like Windows 7 than 8, I'll be happy. having a start menu is a step in the right direction. I don't want touch screen crap on an actual computer.

having a touchscreen for the laptops that lend themselves well to tablet mode (ie. detachable screen, 360° flip, or a tablet-esque laptop like the surface) is great

writing off* the desktop users was their biggest mistake

* or expecting them all to go out and buy touchscreen monitors in order to keep 8 from sucking huge donkey balls

it's a moot point now that windows 8/8.1 is going the way of vista, gladly forgotten once microsoft pulled their collective head out of their collective ass

Damn I remember #winbeta #msbeta #win2000 on EfNet and installing every single beta build of Windows ME. The final product ran so much worse than the earlier builds.

For desktops... I'd hate to be cleaning off smudges all the time. I'd be happy if my monitor never got touched again, especially by coworkers.

i wonder if it'll be a free upgrade for windows 8 users...the rumor mill certainly suggests it will, but that doesn't mean anything

i don't think 8 was a bad OS, just one with stupid UI choices, so i'm not saying they "owe" it to anyone...but that would be pretty awesome

when you upgrade from windows 7 to windows 10 its done through windows update

like it puts an update on your list and then once you accept it goes to town, asks no questions, all software seems to work fine after upgrade

I'm honestly of the opinion that MS is trying (or should be trying) to phase in of a subscription/mini upgrade model similar to OSX.

Instead of buying windows 7, and then hanging with that until you buy your next computer in 4-5 years, they will incrementally add functionality I.E Windows 7.1 7.2 and charge you small fees ($20-$50) for upgrading to the next "revision"

I think this would also allow "In App Purchases" where the OS could have features enabled at a small cost. I.E. if i am running Windows 10, and I want to add in Media Center integration I can buy the feature for $20. If I want bitlocker i can add it for $10. If I want to add in a working start menu they can charge me $5 dollars.

If they start doing this in windows 10, they can ensure a more stable flow if income from the consumer market, and also lock business into a better upgrade model.

It will however require them not to try to redesign the OS every 3-5 years, or pretend that corporate customers are all 21 and want their user experience to mirror the Xbox ONE. I think a break from that cycle will be positive in general. (don't even get me started on the tile interface on server 2012, what crack head though that was a good idea?)

Finally, I think with many of their products, at least over the previous cycle, Microsoft demonstrated that they adopted a stance of NOT listening to consumers, or at least listening to the wrong consumers. I do think that they are trying to get back in line, but they have and are going to continue to backtrack on very poor design decisions across an array of products, or they will continue to loose market share.

Microsoft tried to use its market share to force the user to buy into their vision. While this may work with a smaller vendor, it didn't play to their main strength, Microsoft's main advantage over the history of the company that they made their products to enable you to execute your own vision, they worked with everyone.

Vendors who force you into a locked ecosystem imho will eventually loose market share over time, because they can't easily compete with a vendor that opens the door especially at a lower price point. Even large customers will adopt products that are cheaper to operate, and integrate.

They have plenty of nagware embedded to remind you its the trial version. There is text in the corner of the desktop. Also, last time they had the preview of windows 8 once they abandoned the trial version program it had constant popups reminding you the trial was over and support (updates) had ended. I have never heard of them just stopping your computer from booting up but they can and will make it pure hell to use and unsupported version. Most people want their computer to run smoothly and want security updates.

With Windows 8 you could buy an upgrade for $15 for a limited time upon release, which was available to everyone who had the link. They sent that out in email to everyone who had downloaded the "test" copy. So while you do need to pay for an upgrade at the end of the trial, you can get it stupid cheap.

Also. It says "do not install this version your primary business or personal computer".

I prefer Wordnik; it draws from the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (4th Edition), Wiktionary, WordNet 3.0, GNU Collaborative International Dictionary of English, Century Dictionary (from about 1900), and a wide variety of quotations showing the word in context: https://www.wordnik.com/words/loose

This is also a nice multi-dictionary search: http://www.onelook.com/cgi-bin/cgiwrap/bware/dofind.cgi?word=lose

I dig 10 so far. I put it on a somewhat older Dell laptop. I had Windows 7 Enterprise on it previously. 10 put on every single driver with no issues, including my fingerprint scanner. 7 wasn't even able to pull that off and I couldn't even find a driver for the fingerprint scanner. IE seems more secure, the antivirus is built in (I read that was the case in 8 as well but it's new for me). Seems clean, relatively fast and stable, even for a dev build. I'm looking forward (so far) to the final release.

@disco_stu

the quote in contect was:
"loose market share" and was implying a "loss" of market share, so the correct term would be "lose"

you can't "loosen" market share. it's not an object or "material thing that can be seen and touched", just like market share can't be "tightened" or "taken hold of" so it can't be something that you let go.

jaZon, a little friend named Daz has figured out how to get Windows 7 activated again

Anyway, I tried installing the tech preview on a 2007-era laptop I was refurbishing (first by putting Windows 7 on it, then taking the update), and it ran better, but the audio wasn't working so well; chances are there was some old driver I could have downloaded and installed and it still would have worked, much like the old Win7-era driver for the NVIDIA graphics that still worked in Win10.

Apparently if you take the upgrade on a "non-geniune" Win7 or Win8.1 installation, Windows 10 will still say it's not genuine.

Also, OEMs will no longer be required to allow consumers to disable Secure Boot, so first thing you should ask when buying a new Windows 10 PC is whether Secure Boot can be disabled: http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/03/windows-10-to-make-the-secure-boot-alt-os-lock-out-a-reality/
