Do you think its better to do a track day in my car or do something like VIR's atom experience? I want the best bang for buck since track days + insurance are $exas when compared my $20 afternoons at the dragstrip.

If you haven’t done any auto-xes, I’d suggest doing a few of those and reading a couple of books. That’ll be inexpensive and very low risk. Karting would also help some, but I don’t know how much direct translation there is between “Rush Hour Karting” and a car though. Unfortunately those carts don’t have enough power to make throttle a factor in all but maybe two of the turns. You would probably understand momentum conservation a bit better, and perhaps the line. Anyway, I’m happy to meet up over lunch and talk about this stuff btw. Also, if and when you do decide to do a track event, I’d highly recommend a more relaxed format. If you hook up with me, you’re welcome to ride for several laps even if you’re not participating at that particular event. I hope to do a lot of events this year.

I don’t have experience with VIR’s Atoms (or what that program entails). I suspect it may not be cheaper than using your own car overall. The basics of driving should translate, the Atom may be a bit more fun but as a beginner you wouldn’t really get too much out of it.

Side note: Half the guys at any BMW CCA event used to have an American car (Mustang/Camaro/Corvette, in that order), and half the guys at Porsche events have come from BMWs, (a few directly from a Corvette or a GT40 or the like), so at any given Porsche event, perhaps a third of the drives seem to have gone from American to BMW to Porsche. If you really get into it, it gets expensive, and the progression is pretty common.

Since baonest is replying here:
The guys with S2000s or Exiges/FT86s have often come from another Asian car, and they remain slow!
-This doesn’t count Maria’s supercharged NSX.

^^, ^^^

dude, I'm pretty sure that baonest has logged a lot of miles around road courses

(even f a lot of them are in shitty FWD Hondas )

^ Come on, 'Vettes are legit. They're piece of shit plastic rattletraps, but they are not to be trifled with on a racetrack. It's what they're best suited for, really...it's the daily grind where I'd 10x rather have something German.

My apologies, I assumed I had another yowill0 running off out the side of his head.

I'm just going to put on some sway bars, upgrade the brakes and head out to a track event and have fun with it.

^ I almost bought a vette, sometimes wish I had when I see them on the road. But having 4 doors has saved me so many times.

^^ You should post your schedule for next year

Taking your own car to the track (incl insurance) is still considerably cheaper than VIR's atom experience.

I didn't see a price associated with it, that should have told me all I need to know

It's decided I'll take my heavy sedan and go plow some curves.

I will be at VIR the Sunday after thanksgiving if you want to come ride along on a open track.

Also, ChumpCar world series is at VIR the first weekend in December if you want to come watch and hang out. Its always a good time!
