^^That was where we were. My father in law wanted to go to the imax so we went. It was a small fire but only after some idiot lit fireworks.

Doesn't matter what Lucas said, if he didn't put it in the movies it means nothing.

!!! SPOILER !!!

I just got back from watching it in IMAX 3D. Side note- 3D was annoying and the glasses distracted me.

Loved the movie... but I'm happy Harrison Ford is gone. He seemed really out of place and his acting was forced... IMO.

Rylo seemed like a typical Millennial kid with depression issues who needed a safe space because he came from a broken home.

here are my thoughts after finally seeing it this weekend:

- snoke is IMO going to be revealed as plagueis.

- rey isn't kylo ren's twin sisters. if she was, han and leia are huge dicks for abandoning her. she could definitely be luke's kid though. because he is a stupid dick.

-kylo ren should change his name to darth emo.

Yeah tru dat. I remember one time when I fell clear of out the top branch of a tree, hit every other branch on the way down, and then just got up and walked away. If that shit happened today I would have been carried away in a stretcher.

Why is it that people question how Rey and Chewy are able to find Luke on a planet, yet nobody bats an eye at Luke being able to find Yoda.

Yoda didn't travel the entire planet to get to him. Besides, they were obviously within walking distance of Yoda's home, which appears to be stationary.

I guess we just chalk up both instances as people being guided by the force.

Yoda/Luke was much more impressive given that the entire planet is a swamp and you can't see anything. Rey found Luke with a map, on a planet with a clear sky, on what for all we know could be the only if not only one of a few small landmasses on a planet mostly covered in water. Not many places to look.

Yoda guided Luke's X-Wing near his hut.

At least that what was mentioned in the Legends books.

Just out of curiosity, are you going to see what extra detail you can find? Or just because it's a very entertaining movie?

I'm thinking about seeing it again too, because it won't be on bluray for like, 18 months probably.

I'm just watching because I enjoy it now. The only new details I'm picking up are continuity errors. Here are two!

My favorite continuity error: What happens to Finn's blaster rifle? When Finn & Rey land with Han & Chewie on Takodana, Han gives Finn a blaster rifle. When Finn decides to part from the company to flee the First Order, Han tells him to keep the rifle.

After Rey runs off and Finn comes back as the First Order attacks, Maz gives Finn Luke's lightsaber. When she does this, you can see that Finn has the rifle slung on his back. But when they emerge from Maz's bar outside, Finn isn't wearing the rifle! And he even says to Maz, "I need a weapon!" Dude, you just had one!

Second one that's just kind of fun: When Rey is sneaking around on Starkiller Base, she climbs down onto a wall to avoid a group of stormtroopers on the move. There's a little droid rolling in front of the stormtrooper squad. The way the camera tracks, the droid is rolling toward the bottom right of the screen, but the camera's line of sight to it is blocked by some structure. When the camera clears the structure, the droid should be visible, but it has just disappeared--and the only place it could have gone is through a wall!

April will probably be a basic release with just the movie. I'm waiting for the behind-the-scenes and all that other crap. Although most of the deleted scenes seem to have made their way onto the internet.

Is it worth buying physical media anymore? I mean for something like this, blueray on HD TV's, you want crazy good quality. But at some point digital media will catch up.

Ok I'm a noob when it comes to digital media, but can you "buy" a blu-ray with all of the extra stuff like deleted scenes? Is it menu-driven? How does that work?

Some have special features, others are pretty much just play movie and scene selection.

Yes, I'm just trying to think of the file structure here. Do you download an iso and the software works out the menu? Or do you download several .mkv's?

I've bought a few movies on iTunes with what they call "iTunes Extras." It's usually the normal bonus content you might expect: deleted scenes, featurettes, etc. When I select the movie on my Apple TV, I see a menu very much like a DVD menu with a Play option and extra selections.

There's not really any storage on the Apple TV, so it's all streamed.

You can read more and see an example here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203020

I'm gonna get flamed for this, but I thought the movie was a disappointment. It was a blatant cash grab that was an obvious rewrite of 4 and 1. How many times are we gonna find a mysterious kid on a desert planet whose parents are nowhere to be found? Hey, let's throw in some of the old characters every now and then, despite there being little need for their appearance, much less a coherent plot element which necessitates it. Add in pained acting and stupid bits of "being starstruck" by the old characters, and it all seemed too forced to me, no pun intended. Instead of adding on to a great story, it felt more like they were milking it without adding anything new or original.

At least there was no Jar Jar.

So many people are repeating this "The Force Awakens rehashes A New Hope" meme. If you have found yourself saying this, you either aren't very familiar with A New Hope or honestly just kind of suck at watching movies. Like, your critical faculties, your ability to comprehend a narrative, they are below average. You mistake consonance and rhyme for pure repetition. You see red in two paintings and think both depict the same subject. Colossi stand opposite each other, and you think one a reflection of the other. Your ear: tin. Your eye: dimmed. You are a fool or an enemy of joy.

To each his/her own.

They gave the majority of Star Wars fans what they wanted to see, and nearly 2 billion dollars later, people are still wanting to see it. Does it include Harrison Ford for the nostalgic cash grab? Sure. And I'm ok with that. Most people got a little goosebumpy the first time they saw the trailer where Han and Chewy made an appearance.

I think it would be pretty hard to have a new Star Wars trilogy not start off the way Abrams kicked it off. Ease audiences back into the world of the Force, after Lucas just about ruined it.

And just take it for what it is...a very entertaining popcorn flick. Nothing more than the originals were intended to be.

^^ I'd posit that you are one of the Star Wars fan boys who would never find a single fault with anything officially related to the subject, with a response like that. You know, the kind of person who would laud the vision of a copy of Saving Silverman as long as Lucas, himself, slapped a Star Wars label onto it.

Seriously, it's not a "meme" to point out the substantial number of identical plot elements between the two films. Add in Episode 1 and its similarities, and it becomes a valid criticism of a lack of originality. This isn't "two paintings have the same colour used somewhere in them;" it's "two paintings have identical subjects, in the same place on the canvas, doing the same thing, with the same backgrounds, but with a slightly different color b pallet." Maybe Disney does something stunning with a major divergence, thus playing off of audience expectations due to the initial similarities," maybe. But then again, you could accomplish that with similarities in just the first 30 minutes; you don't need a full feature-lengthed movie of it.

Instead, it looks like a naked cash grab by repeating a story for an audience who the filmmakers know would not be accepting of a reboot

See, you being dumb though. Look:

Quote :
"How many times are we gonna find a mysterious kid on a desert planet whose parents are nowhere to be found?"

Luke lived with his aunt and uncle. That film told us that his father was dead, killed by a student of Obi-Wan Kenobi's.

Rey has no one. She's alone, and we don't know why. She is a mystery in a way Luke never was. And there are much more fundamental differences between the two of them.

Luke is introduced as a boy who whines about his chores. Rey is self-sufficient and capable.

Luke wants to leave his home behind and find adventure. Rey needs to stay right where she is, because she dreams of a family that left her coming back.

Luke embraces his destiny but only after his old life has been destroyed. Rey refuses Luke's lightsaber (yeah, yeah, "refusal of the call") until after the new life she hopes for has been threatened.

I could do this shit all day. You know why? Because I'm fucking thoughtful and attentive and not a dullard or cynic.

Quote :
"Hey, let's throw in some of the old characters every now and then, despite there being little need for their appearance, much less a coherent plot element which necessitates it."

Leia and Han were leaders in the Rebellion. The rise of a faction that threatens the Republic draws Leia into the Resistance. The First Order and the Resistance are both looking for Luke Skywalker. That search takes Poe Dameron and Kylo Ren to Jakku. Finn serves the First Order, and Rey is on Jakku. Leia's involvement is completely natural and coherent, which I can appreciate because I have a brain capable of comprehending the narrative.

Han and Chewbacca are looking for the Millennium Falcon. Rey and Finn escape the First Order aboard the Millennium Falcon. Why was the Falcon on Jakku? Rey explains the chain of thefts that brought it to Unkar Plutt, but oh my gosh could something else possibly be going on that the movie didn't make explicit?

When that little microphone droid on Takodana reports its sighting of BB-8, that brings the First Order running. Leia and Han are reunited, and they reveal through their conversation that Kylo Ren is their son. But no, you know what, you're right. It's totally contrived that two prominent figures from the days of the Rebellion would get involved with anything having to do with their son who is a fearsome commander in the First Order. Doesn't make any sense for them to be in the movie at all. You're not obtuse in the least.

Quote :
"Add in pained acting and stupid bits of "being starstruck" by the old characters, and it all seemed too forced to me, no pun intended."

Rey was thrilled to meet Solo, but she was anything but starstruck. She held her own as his co-pilot and earned his appreciation.

Finn wasn't even that impressed with Solo aside from recognizing him as a Rebel general. He actually tried to carry on with his lie about being a member of the Resistance.

What the hell else are you even talking about? Rey's silent appeal to Luke in the end? It ain't like motherfuckers was like OH YOU'RE THE PRINCESS LEIA? THE REAL THREEPIO?

Quote :
"Instead of adding on to a great story, it felt more like they were milking it without adding anything new or original."

We've got a dark lord who is tempted by the light side of the Force, the scion of two Rebellion stalwarts who nonetheless throws in with the forces of evil. He has a temper, he has a wish, he has shit we haven't had from other Star Wars movie villains. Did Vader in Episode IV have half the depth of Kylo Ren? Did Darth Maul? Did Palpatine?

We've got a movie that pulls out the destruction of the entire goddamn central government of the Republic and leaves us with a meager Resistance that's had half its fleet destroyed. The Rebel Alliance was always at a disadvantage in the original trilogy, but the Resistance is almost finished already! Sure, maybe the First Order is, too. We really don't know. Starkiller Base was a huge loss, but who knows what other resources Snoke has at his disposal?

We've got a fucking stormtrooper who became a hero. Kylo Ren being the beloved prodigal son on the wrong side of the angels is one thing, but Star Wars movies ain't given us a bad guy turned good. What, Darth Vader's turn at the end of Return of the Jedi? That's where Finn is starting from. There's no comparison, that shit is new as hell in these movies.

The new ship designs were pretty lackluster, I'll give you that. BUT FUCKING ATMOSPHERIC DOGFIGHTS, DUDE. That shit is amazing. Like most of them fuckin' dogfights was in atmosphere!

The new creatures are dope. Those mosquito men on Takodana! Teedo and his luggabeast! BB-8! Rathtars!

Locations! D'Qar and Takodana got trees and lakes and shit! The ship graveyard on Jakku!

You are out of your goddamn mind if you didn't like this movie and even more out of your mind if it's because it's "more of the same," a "retread," a "rehash." Fuck outta here with that.
