I understand the differences between sunni and shia but do not really understand how it actually affects everyday life. I don't know enough about the daily practices of each sect to truly understand this issue.

When we say one group "oppresses" the other through government power, what does that look like?

How is the Iraqi government oppressing sunnis today?
How did Saddam oppress the shia population?

Already read that. That is an overview and doesn't really answer the question the I was hoping for. Perhaps it really is as simple as the history of killing leaders from the other sect.

Did you follow the separate links for each of the countries? That would give you 10 (maybe 100) times the material from just that section on that page.
