Comes out 11/11. Based on the short story, "Story of Your Life". Directed by Denis Villeneuve who, after Sicario, I will watch anything he directs.

after watching the trailer and reading some of what it is based on, I really hope that this doesn't get bog down by a dramatic subplot involving her daughter. I'm just sayin', the trailer is basically promising us something along the lines of Contact part II, and it would suck going in expecting an intellectual thriller and then coming out getting something like Tree of Life.

^^Maybe I should assume you've already seen these too, but prisoners, enemy, and incendies are all really good too.

saw the early screening last night. this will win Oscars - especially for Amy Adams. I'll be very interested to see everyone's take on it come Friday.

So I take it it is worth going to see? Am I going to need to avoid the internet for it not to be spoiled?

definitely worth seeing. don't think you'll need to avoid the internet - it would be kinda tough to spoil this accidentally.

Agreed that this movie is quite good. My biggest gripe is that I never got to hear the payoff of the other guys response to what war means in sanskrit, since they decided to say that line with an extremely loud helicopter completely obscuring what Forrest Whitaker said, for a movie about communication that sure botched that, but otherwise awesome movie.

^The guy at Berkley said it translated to "An Argument" but Louise translated it as "An offer to trade cows" (or something like that). I think it was meant to convey that the Berkley guy would be more likely translate things with hostility.

Cool, I heard what she said, and I knew the gist of what they were trying to convey, but I just couldn't understand at all what Whitaker said the guy from berkley said, completely due to that helicopter sound, my wife looked at me at the same time and asked wtf did he say, not a big deal

Used block buster themes, alien invasion, to draw in the audience but goes in a really indie film direction.

Love it

I thought it was pretty good but I wouldn't consider it amazing. I will watch it again though as it might be one of those movies where the second time around you see everything completely different.

I really like dialog driven sci fi movies that explore a concept in depth, but unless I missed something, the concept of 5th dimensional time doesn't really impress me. There was no novel understanding or interpretation of causality loops, amd I think there was some lost opportunity in exploring the societal breakdown and rebuilding.

I did really like how they portrayed the aliens, we rarely see non humanoids in a non-earthlike environment.

i watched this and i think i missed something because i didn't think it was very good

it was beautifully shot, and the alien interaction was neat, but i didn't think the story really went anywhere. i kind of zoned out around the time she was calling the chinese dude because of what she knew from the aliens from the future because she learned their language and could time travel (yawn) so maybe i missed the plot climax or something

Great film. Due to the twist and somewhat slow pace, it's not a film I'd want to rewatch.

My biggest gripe is the tension could have been better. The whole premise was "if we don't figure this out quickly, World War III is going to start", but there were no concrete steps towards that.

Quote :
"it would suck going in expecting an intellectual thriller and then coming out getting something like Tree of Life"

Yea. I fucking hated Tree of Life and there was a good bit of this film where it was spending lots of time doing the same shit and I was quite worried. But the big difference is this movie pulled it together and it actually made sense. It meant something. Tree of Life had no plot.

I have no idea what you mean, but when was the last time you saw a smart time travel movie? Looper was interesting and yet totally incoherent when it came to the time travel logic.

This movie steals a ton from Interstellar. It basically is Interstellar but with two minor changes.

It's based on a short story published in 1998, I doubt they stole too much from interstellar

then maybe interstellar stole from the short story. It doesn't matter, they are basically more or less the same movie. With some differences in the script.

Neither of these movies invented casual loops, which is the only similarity I can see. Also, the loop in Arrival is a pretty small part of the plot and somewhat unnecessary too.

It's also a strange comparison because this movie isn't a big pile of dogshit.

The movie was OK, not bad, not great either. Not sure why its getting such great reviews. I think Contact was a better movie overall.

Spoilers below

Ok, first off. If a more intelligent life form visited us and needed to communicate with us. Should we be teaching them our language so they could tell us what their message was in English? Instead this retarded movie has humans deciphering their language and talking back to them in their language. I thought it was silly how slowly they progressed with writing on whiteboards, when it would make much more sense to put together a video we could show them to teach them English so they could respond to us in English.

Also, the whole bit where some rogue soldiers place a bomb in the alien space craft. Seemed kinda like lazy writing to me. A handful of soldiers could have instigated a war with superior lifeforms that could have just destroyed the whole planet. But the actual effect was minimal, aliens just flew their ship up another few hundred feet.

Advanced civilization contacts humanity with unknown intentions.

Humanity then sends a team to investigate.

Cat and mouse chase ensues where a loved one back on earth is eventually used by the advanced society as a means to bring a new skill and craft to a member of the investigative team.

It is then revealed that the advanced society helps the humans because they will need their help/survival in the future.

The tool that the humans learn from the advanced civilization is used to save the human species.

In my mind that is the same basic premise, only with changes in the script.

I enjoyed the movie's concept but the script was terrible and the background of potential global war was poorly executed. It was a movie with a lot of potential but it was bigger than its screenwriters. Anyway with that said things will always get messy when you deal with time travel and causality loops. It certainly leaves the door wide open for plot holes etc.

BanjoMan, I swear to God your reliably terrible film literacy makes Entertainment more entertaining.

Quote :
"Advanced civilization contacts humanity with unknown intentions."

No contact instigates the events of Interstellar. Earth is dying, and humankind needs to find a new home. A wormhole opens near Saturn, and the plan is to travel through the wormhole in hopes of finding a habitable world. Humanity then sends a team to investigate.

Now, NASA has a theory that the wormhole was created by intelligent beings, and Coop supposes that humans from the future might have created it, but there is no contact that sets the events of the film in motion. There is an "alien" encounter, yes, but it occurs during the journey--it isn't the reason for the journey.

What exactly are the cats and mice in either movie? Have you ever even seen a Tom & Jerry cartoon?

CHARACTERS experience a PROBLEM and have to find a SOLUTION with OTHER CHARACTERS.

To be fair, Coop is given a set of coordinates that leads him to NASA. But presumably the mission would have happened with or without him.

Again, the only real similarity here is that both films have causal loops and the one in Interstellar seems really contrived to me. The loop in Arrival is an afterthought, more of an icing on the cake type thing. Banks isn't a random bum who's thrust into the plot for no reason. She cracked the fucking case and deserves to take her new super powers out for a spin.

Quote :
"The tool that the humans learn from the advanced civilization is used to save the human species."

Man, there's a revolutionary concept that no one has ever explored ever.

Quote :
"Cat and mouse chase ensues where a loved one back on earth"

Back on Earth? The entire thing takes place on Earth. Banks starts out as a loner; she's not a loved one of anyone relevant to the plot during the events of the film.

Quote :
"the background of potential global war was poorly executed"

Yea could have been better.

I also thought it was ho hum. The chinese were caricatures. The military guys were caricatures. Seems like the plot was driven forward by irrational villains, which is always annoying. The characters were pretty week overall.

Did Amy Adams actually have to do anything, here?

I think this wanted to be an arthouse movie but fell short.
