I think the Democrats should. They can admit that the original was not a complete package and has a lot to be fixed up. So let's fix it, and let the Dems be the heroes. Instead of the Republican method of letting nothing happen to make the other side look bad, let's do as much as we can and become a party of action.

Republican president, Republican congress, Republican house

and Trump blames the Democrats for this thing's failure. Funny.

As I recall, same pattern happened with social security. Opposition party spread all kind of lies about it. It passed. Suddenly people realized it actually helped them and it's been permanent ever since.

I suspect the same will happen with health care at this point.

Which makes this defeat and move on even more stunning.

While this would be good news if it holds up, I'm still expecting that at some point they push through a surprise ACA replacement with completely new text and little time for anyone to really process what the bill says.

i'm having a hard time believing this is true:
Germany slams ‘intimidating’ £300bn White House bill
http://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/germany-dismisses-white-houses-intimidating-300bn-bill-for-defence-dl7dk629k

Donald Trump 'printed out fake £300bn Nato invoice and handed it to Angela Merkel'
President estimated Germany’s underspend on alliance over the past 12 years, then added interest

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/donald-trump-angela-merkel-nato-bill-defence-ignore-usa-germany-spending-a7650636.html

a german minister is saying its true, trump's administration is saying its not. i hope this is not true, because that its pretty ridiculous even for trump

That's pretty fucking awesome. Germany and others in Europe depend way too heavily on the US to protect them instead of kicking in their fair share for defense. Handing Merkel an invoice like that would let her know very bluntly that the complaints against NATO weren't just campaign fluff to stir up voters.

Really bad things happening in Syria today and right now. Asad is continuing to gas Syrian citizens including children. Some of the pictures coming out are horrifying. Typically, this would be an critical time for the US to lead. Instead, Trump is blaming Obama.

Quote :
"Trump's statement on Syria's chemical gas attack is 77 words long. 37 words are spent condemning Assad. 40 words are spent condemning Obama."

I am as big a critic of Obama's foreign policy as anyone on this site. But Trump needs to move on. Of course Obama didn't do anything to make the situation better in Syria. But none of that matters. What matters is what Trump is going to do. Right now, his policy is no different than that of Obama, which he criticizes.

We never had great options re Syria, I'm not sure how serious Obama was about Syria when he asked congress for AUMF, he kicked it to Congress, and they too opposed going into Syria. I would wager most TWWers were against boots on the ground in Syria too back then. Maybe if we surged in Iraq ISIS never happened, and Syria never happened? This is a lot of ifs to try to pin this current situation on Obama. We should have never been in Iraq in the first place-- that was where we screwed up, but its the world we live in.

Trump ran on a platform of being more friendly to Assad and Putin, he said he wanted to go after families, i don't see how Trump is even against these atrocities. Effectively, our ally just gassed a bunch of kids.

I'm not really sure what we can even do. I don't see any protests stopping Trump from joining forces with Assad, but isn't standing back and just letting this continue just as wrong? Unless Trump is impeached, i think we're in for 4 years of escalating atrocities, the Executive branch is delegated control over military. With Trumpism stoking fear of Muslims and brown people too, there's probably a sizable chunk of Americans who won't care at all.

^This hits the nail on the head. Obama was dramatically limited in options with Syria because his predecessor invaded a pointless country that gave us 15 years of war and over $1 trillion added to the national debt. The American public was never going to support boots on the ground in another Middle Eastern country that did not threaten the United States.

Americans won't support a war against a non-existential threat if more than 500 Americans are killed as a result. Look how quickly we had to duck out of Somalia in 1993.

Obama yielded to the Congress (which is what every single fucking president before him should have done before engaging in any military action anywhere) and Congress wasn't for it because they knew they would not be reelected.

I'm absolutely certain this was also a large reason no one defended Ukraine and while Syria was ultimately not a geopolitically big deal, letting Russia take Crimea was a massive mistake on our part. THAT would have been the only time it would have actually made sense for a the president to use his powers to do something, especially since we were effectively obligated to via a formal agreement.

As for Trump talking shit about Obama's inaction:

Quote :
"Tillerson noted that the attack was the third time such weapons are alleged to have been used this month, charging: "It is clear that this is how Bashar al-Assad operates: with brutal, unabashed barbarism."

http://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/syria-chemical-attack-reportedly-kills-dozens-idlib-province-n742416

Third time since Trump's been president and not a single military response.

Agree on the red line comment. I can only think he said that hoping it would bring Congress in line. Clearly naive.

Regarding destablilizing Syria, that's due to a combination of Bashar and ISIS/ISIL. Once we really got engaged there, Russia moved in as Syria is a core strategic interest for them. Now it's your normal proxy war between two superpowers.
