I'll be honest I haven't watched UNCW play since he has been there, so no clue. I would call Archie first still.

KenPom: UNCW: 45 Off: 27 Def: 127 so that is not very encouraging. Sounds like something we already have.

Dayton however: 39 Overall Off: 131 Def: 8. 8th nationally in efficiency. That's UVA territory. Exactly what we need.

We'll lose games 58-55 instead of 98-85. Progress.

Tony Bennett has had success in a P5 conference.

Do you think our fanbase won't lose their shit when we lose games because we can't score 60 in a game? As if that's somehow more comforting than losing because we give up 100+ points?

The A10 is currently the 7th best Conference. It has 4 teams in the top 64. Is usually a multi-bid league. And Archie has taken a A10 team to an Elite Eight, so obviously the league is not holding him back. Dayton currently averages 75 PPG but more importantly gives up 63.

[Edited on January 22, 2017 at 5:11 PM. Reason : Only 2 of Gott's 6 teams have even averaged more than 75 PPG]

I'll be very upset if we don't even get 1/2 off Papa John's because we can't get to 65

This. Wolfpack Nation must not overcompensate with our next hire. I wouldn't mind if our next coach has greasy hair, bangs co-eds , and teaches lax defense. Just win us the ACC, then punch Swofford off stage.

Not being able to score 60 in a game and managing pace are two different things.

People wouldnt bash the coach for using a lot of time during possessions, where they would if we continuously shot under 40% from the field

What were Herb's defensive efficiency ratings? Isn't Archie part of the coaching tree of the guy who quit after 10 seasons because he reached his plateau (and our fans were talking shit to his daughter and other classless stuff)

Once we beat Louiville, ppl will want this thread locked. But after we get our shit pushed in by unc again, and Then lose the next 3 in a row, we will be back folks.

Until then, hold strong- and continue pondering our next coaching move.

First comment in about 10 years - Still think Gott should go, unless he gets this team to the tourney, which is a huge if

Why isn't Mark Few considered in many coaching searches? The dude makes 1/2 of what we pay Gott and has consistently done it for years, he's the basketball version of Chris Peterson. I wouldn't mind hiring and guy and going to the final four the next year like Peterson did with his first power five shot.

^ Frank Martin is not a bad option at all. He did well at K-State and is doing well rebuilding at USC. He's crazy intense which I love as it would be a complete change from Herb/Sid/Gott and their laid back ways.

He left K-state because he got a 25% raise to go coach in a 14 team conference with essentially two universities that give a fuck about basketball (UK and UF). Plus recruiting young black kids to Manhattan, KS ain't easy. Synder does it with the football team through the JUCO ranks and Snyder is a genius.

It's a double edged sword.

Gott is underachieving with great talent. But prior to Gott, we couldn't even sniff that level of talent.
I'm so frustrated with our inconsistency and WTF losses marred by poor fundamentals.

Then at the same time, we've had better results with Gott than any coach since Jimmy V.

ultimately, I'm far less frustrated with Gott than I was with Herb or Sidney.

Lowe recruited three 5*'s and multiple other high level prospects. I believe he was also super close to landing a couple superstar level guys, like John Wall, but maybe that is myth

[Edited on January 25, 2017 at 12:49 PM. Reason : Even herb got Hodge, Costner and Fells]

^yeah Herb got a handful of highly thought of recruits in his 10 years. Sid got a few more than Herb, it seemed, in an obviously shorter window of time. But Gott has still recruited way better than Herb or Sid ever did. Truthfully, other than some of the Les Robinson year and earlier Sendek years (pre-2000 we'll say) talent has never really been the issue. Sure, Gott's teams have been even more talented. Sendek's teams were talented and for a few years the results proved that, but he didn't produce NBA level talent. He had a way of coaching up lesser recruited players and maximizing their talent while managing to limit the ceiling on highly recruited and more athletic players due to his offensive system. Lowe had talent, at times depth was an issue...partially because that always happens when there's a coaching change. But Lowe also just couldn't coach.

I think Lowe also failed at recruiting a PG until it was too late. Gott has had a string of good-to-great PG's.

Recruiting is not an issue at NC State. Sendek got good recruits. Lowe got good recruits. Gottfried gets good recruits.

Harrow was a 5? That's hard to believe. I think Zo was a 4 but had to delay enrollment or something like that to the next year where he may have been viewed by Scout as a 5 but wasn't ranked either. The only other 5 stars I think we've gotten in the last 15 years or so are Cedric Simmons and JJ Hickson.

TJ was a 4 according to this.

Gott's recruiting classes:

2016 - 6th
2015 - Not top 25
2014 - 20th
2013 - 12th
2012 - 5th

I was using rivals and counting Hickson, Leslie and Harrow. 247 puts Harrow and Brown JUST outside 5 star territory.

If you look at 247's top 10 state recruits since they started tracking you have Gott with five (1,4,5,7,10), Lowe with three (2,3,9 and also 11) and Sendek with two (6,8). However Gott also has 12,13 and 14.

he was pretty highly thought of, obviously he never panned out. but he was a mixtape sensation. tyler lewis wasn't a 5* either but Lewis was a mcdonalds AA and another mixtape sensation.

that's fair and accurate...latin heat and marques johnson weren't great PGs. and he had Atsur for about half a season due to injuries. but PG or no PG, Lowe just wasn't gonna cut it as a college coach imo.

better than last season in what sense? like...strictly in terms of record? if we miss the postseason again this year (including NIT) but our record is a couple games better, is that really "better" than last year?
