^^^ everybody had seats, but then the airline decided they wanted four of their employees on the plane also, which was obviously a late decision.

either way this is is fucked up. knocking a passenger out and then dragging him across the aisle? and that too, a doctor who said he had patients the next morning? wtf, is that a prison or an airplane?

why do such scenes happen in planes and schools only in good ol' 'merica?

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/dr-gridlock/wp/2017/04/10/a-man-wouldnt-leave-an-overbooked-united-flight-so-he-was-dragged-off-battered-and-limp/

atrocious, just atrocious.

guns
militarization of police
prison industry
police slamming kids on the ground in class
you are with us or against us

WTF??? language of force and violence everywhere.

yeah this time it isn't an issue of an overbooked flight. that would have been taken care of before they seated the plane. United tried to force this guy off the plane so that some mechanics could make it to work on time the next day.

This. Probably never would have come to this if they just didn't let them on. He could have hat a fit at the counter sure, but I doubt things would have ever needed to get physical on either side there.

Also I don't think this is the normal overbooking situation when you are bumping people to handle your own staffing problem and not just trying to optimize occupancy.

So, is it true that this is a right essentially signed away when you purchase a ticket? I'm sure it's somewhere in the fine print under terms of service that they get to whoop your ass and drag you off in the plane at will.

I suspect United's terms and conditions of ticket purchase say something to the effect of "we reserve the right to deplane you for any reason."
Not saying that the guy should have been violently assaulted, but if the captain of the aircraft tells you that you're no longer an authorized passenger, then you need to get off the plane. This will probably get settled out of court for some large amount of money. But both parties could have handled this better.

I know that this stands no chance of happening, because....monopolies.... but it would be so nice if America was so appalled by this that United's stock price plummeted.

Yeah, I'm sure you would react politely if the captain told you to get off the plane, after you've boarded with your family on fully paid tickets. I would have refused to deplane as well. I don't think the passenger could have handled this better. He didn't fight them. He had just as much right to be there as every single other paying passenger on that plane. United could have found another way to get their employees to their destination (another airline, bus, car) but they don't give a shit about the PR hit because no one likes airlines anyways. This will be completely forgotten in 2 weeks.

Airlines bank on being able to bribe people into giving up their seats and this time no one took them up on it. I guess this is the result.

https://www.united.com/web/en-US/content/contract-of-carriage.aspx#sec25
Quote :
"Boarding Priorities - If a flight is Oversold, no one may be denied boarding against his/her will until UA or other carrier personnel first ask for volunteers who will give up their reservations willingly in exchange for compensation as determined by UA. If there are not enough volunteers, other Passengers may be denied boarding involuntarily in accordance with UA’s boarding priority:
Passengers who are Qualified Individuals with Disabilities, unaccompanied minors under the age of 18 years, or minors between the ages of 5 to 15 years who use the unaccompanied minor service, will be the last to be involuntarily denied boarding if it is determined by UA that such denial would constitute a hardship.
The priority of all other confirmed passengers may be determined based on a passenger’s fare class, itinerary, status of frequent flyer program membership, and the time in which the passenger presents him/herself for check-in without advanced seat assignment."

So... I'm pretty sure by not deplaning you're committing a federal crime by not complying with crew member instructions. And I'm 100% sure you're failing to abide by the contract you entered into with the Carrier when you purchased the ticket.

Again, i'm not saying United didn't totally fuck this up about as bad as it could be fucked up. I'm saying the passenger doesn't have a right to his seat like a few people have said.

Denied boarding =/ deplaning.

This is a completely different story if it happened before they boarded the plane (which is what usually occurs.) United completely fucked this up. This guy wasn't involuntarily denied boarding, he was kicked off a flight he had already boarded. There is a difference and I'm sure his lawyers will think so as well.

I think there are a few outliers here:

1) United made a stupid last minute decision to bump 4 boarded travellers off a fully booked flight for 4 of their employees...In theory (read:hopefully) to keep another flight from being cancelled.

2) Nobody/not enough people took the $800 offer to take another flight.

3) This dude went to completely ballistic when told to deplane.

I'm sure dude signs away his rights to not being deplaned for any reason, but it seems the air marshalls or w/e didn't handle this correctly as at least one of them has earned a suspension and an apology from his employeer.

That being said though, the blame for this situation is on United for #1. They're really stringing together quite the shitty run of PR with this and that stupid 10 year olds in leggings story (a policy most other airlines have relaxed). They need to revise their policies.

^^^sweet straw man bro. You could just as easily argue that the boarding process isn't over until the cabin doors are closed, or until the boarding ramp is retracted, or until the aircraft is taxiing under its own power.

The United Contract of Carriage discusses refusing boarding, not being forcefully dragged off a plane after you have already been successfully boarded. Besides, who wants $800 in airline vouchers that will expire in 3 months in exchange for missing the last flight of the day?

The only thing that will prevent this guy and other passengers from a massive payday over this event would be United going into bankruptcy and there not being anything left to take.

Exactly.

I'd get off the plane as a favor before I'd comply with the pretension that their non-transferrable coupons are soooo worth it to me. The whole deal is insulting...even to people who like to play along and travel a lot.

^Travel is stressful for a number of reasons, and airlines have only made it worse over the past few decades. I love flying, but I despise almost everything about it, too. "Please kill me" is what we're all thinking on the tarmac.

I heard he was saying that after he somehow made it back onto the plane. He was walking up and down the aisles and was later found to have gotten a concussion, so he clearly wasn't in a solid state of mind.

Also, it boggles my mind that he was somehow able to evade security and gate agents to get back on the plane a second time, especially after he was dazed from a concussion.

Deregulation of the airline industry has been a mega FAIL, and yet the airline industry continues to jack up fares, tack on bullshit fees, treat passengers without status like absolute garbage, and then it turns around as beg the government for money or files for bankruptcy whenever it can. We now have caste system that's worse than India's whenever we board a domestic flight.

I hope this brings United down, HARD.

For the most part, only wealthy people and people who travel extensively for work have high status with United, so they're going to lose out on A LOT of small time fliers who will gladly pay a bit more to another airline. They have a hub in SFO, but I decided a long time ago that their airline sucks and Alaska/Virgin/Southwest are a better carrier overall.

Fuck the airlines. I wish they were competitive so we could all choose which one we want to take. Unfortunately for most people you are stuck with one most of the time unless you want to pay out the ass to go way out of your way.
