The dollar is the only bill not updated in the last 20 years so yea seems like an easy one to tweak. The quarter has had constant updates.

If people are OK with tearing down stone monuments and changing the names of cities and states, why would you think changing the ink on some paper would be a test?

This is America.

We won't just change the name of the cities.

We'll sell it off like an arena name. Washington state will now be known as Amazonia.

So you're for changing currency but against renaming the capital? Or just incapable of discussing nuance?

The question is "how far do we go" since you're having trouble piecing my posts together

I gave my position on the last page. Other people have already said yes to like everything you've asked. Logistically changing money is probably the easiest of any of the things mentioned, other than maybe cheap statues. Which is why it's funny you brought it up as an escalation.

Anyone who asks where do we draw a line is over complicating this because accepting how easy this entire proposal is means that they would have to do something about it. These how far do we go arguments are as stupid as they are helpful.

It’s about what things (monuments, counties, army bases, whatever) represent and the message that that the item sends to those who sees and experiences those things. Also the degree to which that message makes individuals feel unsafe, which is a rather important point when it comes to public spaces, most of which are funded by tax dollars by all individuals.

Monuments that say to honor our confederate dead is a clear line. When people see monuments such as that it sends a message that we honor the confederacy and, by proxy, things for which they stood. When people look at a dollar bill, they think about the greater things that Washington did, not that he held slaves. The dollar bill is not offending citizens who have the right to feel as equal as other born citizens, and thus does not require change. A county being named after a Confederate solider does not elicit the same degree of discomfort, and sometimes fear, as a Confederate flag at a state capitol. Faces on Mt. Rushmore does not given a significant portion of the United States pause when looking at it as being asked to support the mascot “The Rebels” as many black middle school and high school students are.

The lines of where we stop are pretty easy to gauge. Lines aren’t even the slightest bit blurry. There are some memorializations out there that overtly signify to a sizable portion of the United States that they are not as equally valued, wanted, or respected as other members of society and that is not right.

So if it is still unclear to those asking ‘how far do we go’ and ‘where does it end’ I will explain it really clearly for you. We remove items that honor people who openly advocated for the subjugation of an entire race of people and whose words, actions, and responsibilities are immediately and clearly associated with white supremacy and rebellion to enforce that supremacy by those who reflect upon that form of memorial.

that is going to become more and more common as we stagger towards this election

there will be a doubling down since "the left is abolishing the police" and will widen the net of things they claim to be "protecting"

but i suppose this goes in the right-wing radical thread

The Fayetteville Observer wrote a pretty good history. Sounds like they've tried to tear it down a few times to unfuck traffic, but the United Daughters of the Confederacy objects - probably a good indicator of which side of history it's on.

I’m happy to see that monument go. I pass it several times a week and am continually baffled by such an overt tie to racism in such a prominent position on state funded land.

I also think it is interesting that people view removal of these statues as a complicated and nuanced issued. It isn’t. Recently, I’ve been thinking back to when I was in fourth grade and we had friends visiting us from our old town to where we moved. We drove past the court house and my parent’s friends- white in case it matters, which it shouldn’t, but someone here will assuredly make an assumption to the contrary- asked “Is that a confederate statue?!?” My parents responded with a ‘Yes’, which confused me and I asked “But they were the bad guys, right?”, to which my parents also responded with a ‘Yes.”

It’s an almost yo Holmes to Bel Aire length story but what it symbolizes to me is that even a 4th grader can comprehend that these statues should not be up.

That’s an unfortunate (and childish) move, but I’m substantially more okay with removing the confederate monuments and not gaining the African American ones than leaving the confederacy appreciation monuments in place.

I'm absolutely in favor of taking down confederate statues. Put em in a museum, auction them to fund museums, I don't care.

But I disagree with the idea of taking down founding fathers who owned slaves. It comes down to why we 'venerate' them. The confederacy is built upon the idea of defending slavery, it is its main principle. The main principle of the Founding Fathers was not to defend slavery.

Jefferson in particular struggled with the entire concept. While he did believe slavery to be a criminal institution, he knew it as his only livelihood, and justified it to himself in that his example would not do anything but bankrupt him. Funnily enough, Jefferson himself had inherited a large amount of debts from his father in law. At the same time, he pushed for the gradual abolishing of slavery, and for educating and increasing literacy among slaves. He supported banning the import of slaves to begin with.

A quote from the first page of this thread by a confederate leader details this:
Quote :
"The prevailing ideas entertained by [Thomas Jefferson] and most of the leading statesmen at the time of the formation of the old Constitution were, that the enslavement of the African was in violation of the laws of nature; that it was wrong in principle, socially, morally and politically."

And I think that's a perspective that should absolutely be taught among schools and made a focus. Our founding fathers were flawed, but they were. Our nation is flawed, but it is. And humanity is flawed, and will forever be.

I'm talking about the Confederate monuments. Tear them down!

I've been to Germany multiple times and never saw anybody flying any Swastika flags from their houses or any monuments to the Third Reich.
