Sorta feels like this story from The New York Times should've been used to kick off this thread: "Cruise Agrees to Reduce Driverless Fleet in San Francisco After Crash."

https://www.nytimes.com/2023/08/18/technology/cruise-crash-driverless-car-san-francisco.html

Quote :
"On Friday, the California Department of Motor Vehicles, which regulates the safety of the driverless cars, asked Cruise to halve the number of vehicles it was operating in San Francisco. The Cruise vehicle’s collision with a fire truck the day before had injured a passenger in the driverless car. Earlier in the week, another Cruise vehicle got stuck in newly poured concrete on another city street."

Quote :
"Last weekend, about 10 Cruise vehicles stopped functioning in the middle of a busy street in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood, blocking traffic for 15 minutes."

Seems to me they have some credibility problems at the moment. The wet cement is a tough one.

mission impossible series has been pretty decent, that autism savant movie was nice, that, or rather, those lawyer ones. some people said he saved hollywood with top gun after covid? I don't really know anything about the industry, but that's something I guess

he has his own area within which he maintains a certain standard that we can respect

Cruise Self-Driving License Revoked After It Withheld Pedestrian Injury Footage, DMV Says

https://www.vice.com/en/article/4a3ba3/california-dmv-suspends-cruises-self-driving-car-license-after-pedestrian-injury

Quote :
"In the Order of Suspension, the California DMV said that the Cruise vehicle initially came to a hard stop and ran over the pedestrian. After coming to a complete stop, it then attempted to do a 'pullover maneuver while the pedestrian was underneath the vehicle.' The car crawled along at 7 mph for about 20 feet, then came to a final stop. The pedestrian remained under the car the whole time."

The pedestrian was initially hit by a normal driver, flew up in the air, and landed in front of the Cruise car… not really cruises fault there

However the car continuing to drive after that is cruises fault. Wonder if they’re going to put detectors under the car now…

Cruise Knew Its Self-Driving Cars Had Problems Recognizing Children — and Kept Them on the Streets

https://theintercept.com/2023/11/06/cruise-self-driving-cars-children/

Quote :
"Even before its public relations crisis of recent weeks, though, previously unreported internal materials such as chat logs show Cruise has known internally about two pressing safety issues: Driverless Cruise cars struggled to detect large holes in the road and have so much trouble recognizing children in certain scenarios that they risked hitting them. Yet, until it came under fire this month, Cruise kept its fleet of driverless taxis active, maintaining its regular reassurances of superhuman safety."

All self-driving cars should be programmed to ignore protestors illegally blocking the highway...that'd solve a lot of issues going on in this country. I say we all write to our local representatives and have them enact legislation to allow plowing through protestors illegally blocking the highway. Who's with me?

Cruise has LiDAR so as long as the children aren’t transparent it would avoid them.

GM's self-driving car division is under investigation by DOJ and SEC after pedestrian dragging incident

https://www.cnn.com/2024/01/25/cars/gm-self-driving-car-unit-criticized/index.html

Quote :
"'We acknowledge that we have failed to live up to the justifiable expectations of regulators and the communities we serve,' Cruise wrote in its blog post on the report. 'In doing so, we also fell woefully short of our own expectations.'

Cruise told CNN it is cooperating fully with the federal investigations but cannot comment on them."

GM's self-driving car company Cruise lost $3.48 billion in 2023

https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2024/01/31/cruise-self-driving-company-loss-gm/

Quote :
"Cruise, once regarded as a front-runner in the autonomous car industry, has been bleeding money since General Motors acquired it in 2016. While General Motors said Tuesday that it 'remains committed' to Cruise, the automotive giant also said it will reduce Cruise's expenses by about $1 billion to 'slow the cash burn and align with a narrower focus in 2024.'"
