PigStock Cancelled..This is the Last Straw

submitted by EVroccck on Thursday, April 26 2001 at 4:32 PM

Once again, another NC State tradition has been brought to an abrupt halt by NCSU Administration and the and everyone's favorite, the Raleigh Police Department. Pigstock A CHARITY EVENT for the Pitt County Humane Society, which has happened every year since the 1980's, will have its tradition of being one of NC State's most fun, safe and wild parties, broken this year b/c of the good ol' Nuisance Party Ordinance. An ordinance originally designed to keep the few elders who happen to live on Brent Rd happy.

As Students its time for us to take a stand and do something about this foul mistreatment we consistently recieve. If we don't get together and fight as a whole our Traditions, NC STATE's Traditions will continue to get trampled until we have no more...Let's get together May 2nd..And show them we will not take ANYMORE!!!

I agree totally! This shit has to stop! I believe now that Pigstock is gone that many more students will join together to try and beat this ordinance. I mean 2 of our best parties of the year have been wiped out by the fucking RPD. Maybe we can get the Pitt County Humane society to join us in the fight due to the fact that their charity will never been seen. After talking to my friend that lives there, ED, we are thinking of alternate things to do on sat.

I HAVE HAD IT WITH THIS UTTER BS. FIRST, IT WAS CAMPOUT, THEN IT WAS THE BRENT ROAD BACK-TO-SCHOOL PARTY, NOW, IT'S PIGSTOCK. IT NEVER CEASES TO AMAZE...WAIT A MINUTE, I TAKE THAT BACK, NOTHING SURPRISES ME ANYMORE. WHILE THEY'RE AT IT, THEY MIGHT AS WELL PUT A STOP TO EVERY F'ING OFF-CAMPUS COLLEGE PARTY BECAUSE AFTER ALL, WE COLLEGE STUDENTS CAN'T HANDLE IT. WE DON'T KNOW HOW TO BEHAVE. I AM IN UTTER SHOCK.

I, as well, am sick and fucking tired of our being treated like children. Pigstock is a CHARITY EVENT, and I've never heard about anything particularly bad happening. I think it would be a great idea for Pigstock to go on without alcohol just to protest non-violently the unfair treatment, and make sure we get as many folks as possible down there. Come on guys, we need to stand up for ourselves. It is time.

you miss the point again Chris... its not like we should have to worry about being caught....

Do we even have anymore traditions??

This is so sad in retrospect... NCSU just is not that much fun anymore, except for friends parties....

First of all, I do agree with this "news story" or whatever you call it and the opinion of the author. However, I just wanted to point out one mistake. Direct from the "Official Pigstock Website"...
Quote:
"The First Pigstock was held in the spring of 1994."

Not the 1980s as the author states. And although I agree that the use of the Nuisance Party Ordiance is well out of hand, I dont know how much of a tradition Pigstock is when its only been around less than 10 years. But, it is being prevented from becoming a tradition. I agree with DirtyGreek -- as much as no one wants an alcohol free event, the "tradition" will still go on and there will be food and bands and money raised for charity. Thank you and have a nice day

This is totally bullshit, i am tired of people not letting us do shit around here. We are not known for huge party's like other schools, but god damn, let us have at least 2 of our best. I have been to pigstock for the past two years and it is a lot of fun. It isnt even that loud. People are just against having fun now i guess. If anyone reading this, is for the noise ordanance, I'll tell you right now that you can kiss my ass. You know that you had fun back in the day. Its just one fuckin night!!

What exactly are the penalties for getting busted? If it is just a fine I would be more than happy to hook a brother up with some change to pay it. If it goes on their record and is going to cost their scholarship and stuff like that then i can understand their reasons for pulling out. We need some 'renegades in this atomic age'. Some peeps that don't mind getting arrested...We call the television stations to come cover the event and then when the cops bust it up all of Raleigh will see how Mr. Kirkman is affecting charity events.

ChiaPimp,

This is not the doing of the Chancellor.

This is the result of the RPD lashing out against unruly and disrespectfull students that have set a bad example for the greater college population.

Let's not forget about the Delta Sigma Phi Lawn Party, they did away with that one too... and that was a legend, like Brent Road and Pigstock and campouts, it seems like NCSU now officially has NO TRADITION for incoming students to look forward to. I'm glad I've been here long enough to have experienced camping out, the lawn party, brent road.

Thanks for making our school dull and deprived of culture! Heavenforbid we blow off some steam before exams.

Thanks RPD.....

I think of ya'll need to find other way to have fun! Getting drunk and having sex with random people is not safe nor fun thing to do. Please find something more productive. I am a student and I have lots of fun doing other things except drinking and having sex at random parties. But your energy and passion into something that is worth wild. Quit complaining about camp out we deserved to have it taken away! We did not handle the responsibility.

I think you completely misunderstand the big issue. You seem to be of the opinion that is held by Mr. Benson Kirkman that it is acceptable to throw the Constitution in the commode and defecate on it as long as it makes people (older people) happy. This is not about drinking or sex. This is about the 1st and 14th Amendment, which guarantee every American freedom of assembly and equal protection under the law. The fact of the matter is, we are discriminated against and targeted as students or young people. This is a blatant civil liberty violation. Just as racial profiling should be eliminated, so should age profiling. If they enforced this equally for a few middle-aged people that want to get together, then it would still violate the 1st amendment, but at least more people would see it as a problem. Opinions like this tear away at the whole notion of the Constitution and I can't help but think that maybe our Revolutionary soldiers died in vain. Our founding fathers roll over in their graves. You misinterpret the entire spirit of the Bill of Rights, which was put into place not to protect the majority (they will already rule), but the inalienable rights of the minority. Once we do that our Constitution loses all legitimacy. Peace.

If students acted in a more responsible manner at these traditional events they wouldn't be cancelled by authorities. I've seen the damages caused by participants in the past as well as the injuries. These actions are not by responsible persons, but rather by peolpe who just want to have a good time at others expense and not be held accountable for the outcomes. I feel for the students who do act responsible at these events because they are the real losers of freedom, but for the others "you get what you desire."

Are you insinuating that irresponsible actions by some members of a segment of the population justify taking away Constitutionally guaranteed freedoms from that whole group? What do you extend that to? Members of an age group? People that belong to a race, ethnicity, gender, sexual preference? The fact of the matter is that they have unconstitutionally taken away freedom from a large group of the population because of when they were born.

Ok I've got to say that this fucking SUCKS!! But Joe is right. We do need to do something about this. I don't know if any of you have actually talked to Benson Kirkman but I have and believe it or not I think that his intentions for the Nuisance Party Ordinance were honorable, but the vagueness of the ordinance has allowed RPD to abuse there authority and to discriminate in there application of the ordinance. As Kirkman told me, “If the ordinance is not being enforced correctly then it is a failure.” Well I thin we can all agree that the RPD has made it a failure and it’s our duty force the issue. I’d encourage all that can to visit Councilman Kirkman on Mondays at Student Government and talk to the man for yourself. You may be surprised how willing he is to help students. By the way Joe what did you have in mind for May 2nd?

Wednesday May 2nd, 11AM, meet at the Bell Tower for mass March on the Capital. Our goal is 500 people, I hope to exceed that. There will be students from multiple universities, faculty, and concerned citizens marching together to the General Assembly to oppose the budget cuts. I laud ASG President Andrew Payne for putting this together.

The march on May 2nd is to oppose BUDGET CUTS, NOT the Nuisance Ordinance. The march is directed towards the NC GENERAL ASSEMBLY, NOT the Raleigh City Council, which made the Nuisance Ordinance. Bringing up the Nuisance Ordinance Wednesday is a BAD idea. The General Assembly has nothing to do with it. Besides, bringing up how you want to party isnt going to make them want to repel the budget cuts. I think that something needs to be done about the ordinance, but you need to find another time and another place to do this. Please dont bring up the ordinance Wednesday, you are only going to embarrass yourselves and the University. Thank you and have a nice day.

This march is to address the budget, which is a MAJOR CRISIS. I do feel that a strong showing at this, however, could get their attention by showing our ability to mobilize. If we can get our act together for this, it will be easier to mobilize students in the future. It would get the attention of the council, and I think that was the intention of the original person that brought the march up.

For those of you who agree with the nuisance ordinance; try reading the Declaration of Independence. What freedoms we have are the result of many lives lost defending the opinions of those who wrote and believed in it. If you don't like America for its freedoms, get out.

First off, I just love how the 3 people who are so anti-student have never even posted here before, hmm..wonder where they came from. Also, I ad a pretty big party a few weeks back which was deemed a "Nuisance Party" and no one was being volient, loud, or obnoxious in anyway way. Just another excuse for RPD to decide for us that we cant take care of ourselves. I am 21 and if I wanna go to a bar and drink my fill then they cant stop me, if I want to go to a party and drink my fill they should not be allowed to stop me either.

We have to stop this. We cant let them push us around anymore and enough talking about it. We have to act now and it cant just be 3 or 4 people that are ballsy enough to do something. Everyone has gotta do this. Pigstock needs to go on as regularly scheduled, no change of plans and everyone needs to go and have a great time. If we get caught, whoever said it earlier, they cant get all of us and it would be worth it to make a point if they got one or 2. We must unite fellow wolfpackers. I dont think anything more needs to be said. WHOS WITH ME??

Gandalf: Leo is right though to some extent. The problem right now is the NPO is being used for any party that is had, regardless of whether it is a true "nuisance". I went to "Brent Road 2" (or whatever they called it) last year, and I could easily see why the cops would want to shut that down. A car was trying to get through the crowd and people started throwing bottles at it. That is completely insane. True, the driver should have went around the other way and avoided the mess, but they did nothing wrong in taking that route, and if the people who were there had used their heads and just gotten out of the way instead of being assholes like they were, it would have been no problem. That was just one of a few things I noticed that night. The fact that the cops didnt ever show up still baffles me. You have to remember that just because YOU and your friends are peaceful and want to have a "peaceful gathering", there are a bunch of idiots here that want to raise as much hell as possible. Unfortunately, everyone will suffer the consequences for it. In trying to make a case against the NPO, I think the focus should be on events such as Pigstock and the lawn party -- things that are probably much more peaceful than the Brent Road party. Thank you and have a nice day.

for everyones information, IF the lawn party wanted to be held at the previous location, RPD COULD NOT enforce the NPO, that site was in the county and not within the City Limits, thus RPD would have NO jurisdiction. I URGE people who want to throw events such as Pigstock to just hold the party outside the city limits. Wake County has no such ordinance.

I would just like to remind everyone that all this semester Benson Kirkman has been coming to the Student Government Office. if you would like to express your discontent with the ordinance and how it ruined another tradition, then feel free to come by and talk with him about it. He comes to campus every Monday at 1:30PM and has met with students all semester about the ordinance, homecoming and many other issues. If you are pissed, let him know you are pissed and how unjustified the ordinance is. If you are interested call the SG office and inform us of what time you would like to speak with him. Now is a perfect time to stop talking and take some action...

As someone who was helping plan PigStock this year, I am sorry that it had to be cancelled this year. We tried everything to keep the 8-year tradition alive. We even spoke to the Raleigh Police Department about not having alcohol present but they said we could be in violation of the Nuisance Party Ordinance even if we did not supply the alcohol. They said if we violated the any part of the Ordinance then the members of the house and the people who helped set the party up would be arrested along with everyone at the party would have been issued a citation. The Raleigh Police Department even after we told them we were canceling the party, had over 70 officers on duty and two mobile police stations set-up outside the party to enforce the Nuisance Party Ordinance.

TOM: we are sorry that the Pitt County Humane Society name had to be brought up in the whole Pigstock mess. We were just hoping to have a decent party and at the same time raise some money for a charity. We did notify the Pitt County Humane Society that we were having a fundraiser before we placed the name on the website.
