Another Summer Blood Drive

submitted by methos on Friday, June 27 2003 at 11:42 AM

ABB, Rex Blood Services and the Centennial Campus Partnership Office would like to announce our 3rd blood drive for 2003.

WHEN: Wednesday, July 16
TIME: 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
WHERE: Service parking area behind Venture Place

All of the Centennial Campus blood drives for this year have been very successful and we need you more than ever. It only takes one hour of your time. Blood supplies are at a critical low stage in this area. We need everyone who can donate, to please do so on July 16th.

To sign up, please e-mail Sue Cross, at sue_cross@ncsu.edu or call 515-7036.

As a special service, Rex will be offering a free C- Reactive Protein screening for anyone donating. Research has shown there is a strong correlation between elevated levels of C-Reactive Protein and cardiovascular diseases, especially Coronary Heart Disease. You are not required to have the screening.

NOTE: Donors should bring a photo ID or blood donor card. Please eat breakfast or lunch before arriving for your appointment.

I put this in the last blood drive front page article, but I'm going to repeat it for the folks who may respond here:

I'm flustered, I want to give again but not after I nearly blacked out the last time I gave. I always eat breakfast every morning (I feel nauseous if I don't) and my iron level was awesome, I weigh about 125 and the cut-off's 120. I don't know why I had such a hard time with it. I'm scared that if I give again they won't be able to respond to my near-black out. Has anyone had a similar experience? Has this experience repeated itself?

^ you really just need to take thigns slow right after you give. I'm not sure when you started blacking out, but it ususally happens after the person is done, and often they get up too fast, and move too quickly. When giving you should always remain calm (its not bad anyway, but nerves do not help), then wait a few minutes after done before rising, then walk slowly to the refreshmant table, and have a snack, and sit for a few more minutes. after that, everyone is fine.
i've actually not had problems before, until my last visit, which didnt go well. I felt sick while giving, and they immediately stopped. If you do feel bad, tell them.
lastly, dont give up because of one experience, it could have just been that day.

It happened while I was giving. I slowed down and called someone over as I lost my sight for a few brief moments. They weren't sure of what to do and I told them that sometimes if I stood up too quickly I would come near blacking out and I thought it might have something to do with having low blood pressure and requested some orange juice to sip. They hesitated and brought me some OJ and then one of the other nurses decided to come over and put a fan on me and that helped a bit too. The hesitating and the nurse that I was with not having any other ideas of what to do is what has made me feel very uncomfortable with giving. I didn't feel sick when I was giving like you did Unipride, so I guess that's why they didn't unhook me right there, I just took the pumping even slower.

i gave once in high school. i lied about my weight to do it. i hadn't eaten a very healthy breakfast. and to show how tough i was after i had gotten up from giving i started dancing around. not a good decision on my part but ah well. i sat down and promptly passed out. when i woke and went into the cafeteria to get food. the whole school knew. i was so pissed. my mom has since forbidden me to give blood...at least until i am at the recommended weight. and lord knows i dont wanna piss that woman off.
