I'm not sure if hyperlink is the correct term or not.

What I'm imagining is if a user posted "^^^^" at the beginning of their post it would give you the option, when clicked upon, to navigate your screen to the post its referencing. Almost like the "go to bottom/go to top" already in use.

^^^^ is how it would appear. No idea how it would be coded. It seems like it would really help with the ease of navigation of the site. It would really come in handy when users have 8 or 9 carets to start out the post. ^^^^^^^^^ can be difficult to follow.

Not sure how it would handle the situation where the number of carets is larger than the number of posts on the page. For example: if the user has the 2nd post on a page and has 4 carets in the post.

The only downfall I can forsee is if users do not edit posts where the number of carets are incorrect.

That'd be fucking gay. It'd be better to have a quote button with every post that would take you to a reply page with a textbox that had the post already quoted and all.

^^ having quotes in every post would make the post and page length increase. What I proposed would not. With the page length increasing it would increase the time to navigate a page.

Also having quotes in every response would require one to overlook idiotic comments twice (or more). Again detracting from the ease of navigation.

Threaded view, then. The carets are gay. Always have been, always will be.

Agreed.

Many more users would probably use the quote function if it was made easier.

Threaded view usually sucks. It might be OK if it were integrated into the post it was quoting, but only if it wasn't allowed to go more than 1 level deep.

Brian, I think what Frosh meant was what something like Offtopic.com has. check out what posts look like on there.
