a uniquely unmoderated medium for mindless discourse, mostly so because of the neglect

Chit Chat might still exist if this site received any attention from the owners, but the site damn sure wouldn't have more than a handful of regular users without it

That's not true at all. The Wolf Web was rolling strong way before Chit Chat, and back in those days the Lounge was even worse than Chit Chat is today—worse than Chit Chat has ever been.

Two answers here.

1. In one word: Myrtle.

2. The Lounge today is defined in opposition to Chit Chat. The Lounge is "good," and Chit Chat is "bad." Here is a simple analogy that shows how the Lounge was worse before Chit Chat:

Imagine the Lounge is five pounds of ice cream. Imagine Chit Chat is five pounds of shit. What do you get when you mix them? Ten pounds of shit.

worthwhile. I'll admit, not everyone can be creative geniuses nor do they have to to post, but it gets pretty taxing when a good 80% of the threads in chit chat are of this nature.

When 80% of the threads in Chit Chat fit the purpose of Chit Chat, yes, I'm happy with that. When that shit is in Lounge and you can't tell the good threads from the bad AT ALL, I'm not so happy.
