i knew a guy who ran his own web server in his closet (he lived off-campus and was just using cable internet to do it), but i didn't know him that well, and he's already graduated and ran off into the real world, so i don't really have anyone to ask...so i'm asking you losers

i have a dual-p3 (700mhz x 2) with 512mb of pc133, 4 20gb scsi cheetahs, and 2 15gb ide drives...it's a solid server, but it's kind of old...would this work? i just want something to host my own website (which hardly gets any hits, but who cares?)

i know there are online guides out there, but the ones i've found haven't been all that great at explaining it to me...i'm passable in linux, and i'm not a complete idiot when it comes to RUNNING a web server (but MAKING one is a little different, i would think)...so does anyone know of a good online guide? or do you have one set up yourself?

If you're on windows use IIS 6.
If you're on lunix use apache.

its gotten considerably better. IIS 5 (which is what tww runs last i checked) is pretty good.

IIS6 which is part of server 2003 is a ton better.

The easiest way is apache on windows.

Its rediculously easy.

Just google "apache" and you'll get the instructions.

^^ you are still bound by your ISP's restrictions (which probably say you can't have a web server). But you only get in trouble if you're caught... kinda like downloading music.

i use apache on my windoze machine

cable access - i don't think they care, although they'd prefer you to use their webservices, but i also run an ftp server which i'm sure they like too, and I sure as shit don't want "rr" anywhere in my free domain name

anyway, download and config the thing, let it run.

now if you're redirecting (a) dns account(s) to your isp addie, it can get a little more challenging or if you're running multiple servers off of the same box

having worked for rr in the past, they have scripts that search for sudden increases in upstream traffic. if it's on port 80, you get a nasty gram. the second time, it's suspension of service.

now, you'd have to have a pretty goddamn popular site for it to get noticed, but it happened/happens.

so how often will they reset your ip addy with rr?

Ive thought about doing this, but I heard you have to pay an extra 30 or so/month to make your address static... thats stupid if you ask me, but I guess it works so that they can charge small businesses.

Also, is there a way to find out what your new address is when they reset it but you are away from your house... if there is a site I can go to to get my new address so that I can change it on the fly, that would be crucial

I don't know much that they actually do care about, really

but I ran 3-5 pretty much open access shell servers off of my cable and moved a couple years later without hearing anything about it from them-- even though several of the people that I had pissed off swore up and down they reported me to my ISP for violating the ToS

your mileage may vary, but I wouldn't really worry about that too much

when i worked there, you had to be moving SERIOUS amounts of data outbound to get noticed. as in your upstream is maxed out for days.

of course most of the people who get caught are being stupid about it. we had a guy who wanted to speak to a supervisor because the t1 tech wouldn't tell him how to setup a ftp server. the tech told this guy it's against the aup, and he was saying shit like "i know, but if i wanted to, how would i do it..."

i bitchslapped that fucker over the phone. i think we shut off his service for a day for giggles too.

Time Warner Cable does care about you running a webserver and not paying for a static web IP.

I don't know how active they are on locating hosted webservers but I do know that they will disable your node if they happen to catch you.

dyndns is what i use, they've got freeware that you d/l and install that automatically detects IP changes and updates your dns account with dyndns

but it changes like once every six weeks. Maybe once or twice a semester (tops).

any decent (ftp) server client has IP update detection too

our IP renewed in exactly 1 year. this may be because our cable modem never reset cuz we kept that and the server on a UPS. RR has the shittiest upload speeds though, i hate it. as soon as Verizon's new Fios shit gets here, im droppin RR.
