OK, so I have roadrunner at my house and I am using a Linksys WRT54G to connect 2 PCs to the Internet. Everything has worked fine ever since I set it up (back around Christmas) but all of a sudden about a day or two ago PC #2 decides that it doesn't want to get on the Internet anymore. I looked at the ipconfig and it has a Autoconfiguration 169 IP and I'm not quite sure why. Windows keeps telling me the router isn't assigning it an IP but PC #1 works fine so I don't really think it's the router. I've tried rebooting, I've tried spyware scanning in safe mode and nothing came up, I've tried the Winsock Fix Utility both in safe mode and normal mode, I've tried unplugging and replugging the network cable on both ends, I've kinda ran out of things to try. Any advice? 7/31/2005 4:32:04 PM |

Did you try resetting the router back to it's factory defaults?
Where there any changes in firewalls?
Are there is major differences between PC1 and PC2 in either hardware, software, or configuration? 7/31/2005 7:10:14 PM |

No I haven't made any changes to bring this problem on, it just kinda randomly happened. I'll try resetting the router back to its defaults though. 7/31/2005 7:14:44 PM |

also, sometimes just the dhcp shit on the router doesnt work right...but everythings works fine if you set that computer with a static IP and dns stuff which will be easy as hell since you only have two computers on the network..worth a shot anyways 7/31/2005 7:26:18 PM |

PC2 won't be able to ping anything if it doesn't have an ip address
did you try a different port on the router? try switching the ports that computer 1 and computer 2 are plugged into. if the problem moves to computer 1, it's the router. if the problem stays with computer 2, it's the computer.
could be a bad port on the router, or your NIC went bad. we've had some bad storms lately, and power surges can do some funky stuff 7/31/2005 8:23:34 PM |

Ok, I just took my xbox in there and hooked it up to that network cable and I was able to get on Live so I know its not the cable. I even tried resetting the router to the factory defaults and everything else thats hooked into that router works just fine so I don't think its the router. I tried switching ports on the router as well. The PC wouldn't ping the router so I tried manually setting the IP and that didn't work and when I did that the ping timed out instead of failing completely.
idk, I'm thinking the nic may have gone bad, I can't think of any other explanation. I checked the Device Manager, nothing funky with the nic shows up though.

I just tried hooking the PC straight to the modem and I got the same problem so I'm gonna assume it's the nic
