it's real. they compiled it for ipod linux

that star wars trailer thing wasn't a real video. it was just frames of images that you could scroll quickly to make it look like you were watching it, and there was no sound.

ipodlinux has minimal support for videos and, now, even doom

its also running at a grand 1fps. Because the hardware cant do fmv, and the screen cant refresh better than 5fps.

The Photo is technically capable of drawing to the screen at faster than 5 FPS easily.

I wouldn't be too surprised if they could get Doom running at a more acceptable framerate with more optimization.

It would also be cool if Apple opened up the iPod SDK so that they could just add this (and other possibly more useful things) as an app to the regular iPod interface.

I suspect Apple isn't going to do this though so that if they have to, they can change the iPod's HW platform at a whim, without affecting anything. It would suck for them (Apple) if they were chained to an entire homebrew community of iPod apps.

ipodlinux now plays videos with sound for color ipods, and supposedly it'll be released for the rest of them very soon
