if you're in a nerd dorm some fag will probably warhammer your shit. if you do run it, run wpa-psk or just wpa with a radius, mac filtering, and a key that's not trivial. also turn off ssid

I ran a B wireless network in metcalf 2 years ago. With those block walls, the signal didn't travel far. I would go from the E to the D room and drop 50% or more on signal strength

Resnet allows people setup wireless routers in the rooms. However, they are not officially supported. Also, it is very important not to setup your router backwards and allow to assign DHCP. You could take down your dorm's internet and it will result in your internet being blocked. Also, Resnet asks that you try and secure the device because if someone compromises it and does something the RIAA or FBI doesn't like, you'll be accountable. Lastly, as a comment, we don't provide wireless to dorms but they might be able to pick up "ncsu" signal if near a lounge or study area. Every dorm should have a public area with an AP.

ok, since I'm a n00b when it comes to wireless networking, I got a quick question

What's the problem with having a wireless network in which everyone can use it..?

Will the network be too small to support a large amount of users?

Or is it more because someone is more than likely to screw with it?

If you don't secure your network. Someone could do something illegal and it would be traced back to you. Furthermore, they'll be stealing the bandwidth that you pay for. Your computer will also be more vunerable to attack since computer security is more lax on the LAN side of networks.

there is no legal precedent in the US for this yet - there are 3 in the UK where the people hosting the insecure wireless routers were found to be not liable (even though the evidence pointing to them doing the actual crime and simply relying on saying that someone could have been on their wireless router)

there's someone with unsecured wireless that's blanketing both suites 504 and 404 in one of the tri-towers
the ncsu connection i'm using in wolf village right now (roomie just set off the fire alarm) reaches a friends room on the second floor, and reaches at least partway up the stairwell to the third.

They used to prohibit any network devices (routers, switches, APs, etc.) from connecting to Resnet, because invariably, some kid would plug in a switch with a low bridge ID and cause a massive spanning tree shitstorm on the network.

Then, sometime in 2002, i introduced a couple of things called BPDU guard and root guard to the ncstate.net folks.

^^ also, hasn't the FCC ruled that ISP's (including campus ones) cannot limit what you do with the connection and how you devide it as long as what you do is not illegal? I could have sworn I heard some story about a campus ISP being sued specifically over wireless routers.

or do section 207 protections not apply to dorms?

what special settings do I need to put on the router? I'm used to just pluggin the bitch in and being on my way, but this time it was a pain in the ass... I got my SSID broadcast off and got it WPA-ed and shit. Anything else? RIP?
