I just set up a wireless network with an 802.11G router. The connection is either Very Good or Excellent. I have no problems with speed or anything. But every 5 minutes or so, I will get disconnected. I'll have to open the wireless network dialog box and manually reconnect it.

Does anyone know what might cause this?

used to happen at my x-gf's apartment, switching it to a different channel fixed it somehow. there were literally about 20 wireless networks that she could connect to and all of them were on channel 6. i dont know why, but being on a different channel fixed it for her...

^ that. And make sure that the router isn't requesting that clients reauthenticate every 5 minutes. Set it to the max.

if that fails, after you're connected, disable windows managing your connection. it's annoying, but it works for me.

Make sure to update the wireless cards drivers and the routers firmware.

If you've not done so yet, I'd also recommend doing some of the other usual security precautions, like enabling WEP/WPA on the router and computers, changing the router's SSID, and disabling broadcasting of the SSID.

Also, make sure that you've changed the router's default administrative password.

I've had luck with turning off the "Wireless Zero Configuration" under Administrative Tools, Services. Supposedly it has something to do with your computer looking to use stronger signals from other wireless routers. Stopping this service prevents this. Try this, in addition to the other suggestions above, it's all good advice.

Stopping windows from controlling it worked.

That's crazy. I hate windows.
