i heard things about oceana today 8/24/2005 10:16:14 PM |

yeah the Oceana stuff is crazy. The City Council isn't all that interested in keeping the jets around, they think they're going to just get the land from the federal government and turn it into more retail.
And the rich people bitch about the noise.

I love it. Every congressman thinks that the little-heard-of base in his district is the headquarters for the War on Terror. 8/26/2005 8:51:06 PM |

That reminds me of how the Naval ROTC building on Western stopped letting ROTC students park there after 9/11. 8/27/2005 2:31:02 PM |

It's the reserve building, not ROTC.
I'm in Navy ROTC - all the branches have got little offices in Reynolds - and they still think of kicking us out sometimes. 8/27/2005 4:14:20 PM |

it's a good thing they didn't totally close down Oceana
because if they did VB would go to shit and have to figure out how to create a real job market 8/27/2005 5:38:11 PM |

from what i heard
oceana's not closing, but they're telling a bunch of military personel to leave the area or something to cut future costs
i dunno, just what my dad told me, i think 8/28/2005 2:02:33 PM |

1. its my understanding they have 6 months to foreclose the encroaching properties and if they don't, THEN they will be closed at which point the presidents brother gets to re-open cecil fielder and get a shit ton of economic benefit
2. i'm wondering why you said VB has no other real economy source] 8/28/2005 5:55:07 PM |

VB consists of military, residents, and tourists
if you take away a good chunk of the military influence from the city then it's just the normal people waiting for the tourists to come every summer
VB isn't known for anything else other than tourism, there are no big businesses located in the area, at most there are corporate branches mainly in Norfolk. Take away the military, then where will a good portion of the revenue for the city come from?
Well, it is just Oceana and there's still a shitload of bases around the area. I guess I overreacted a bit. I grew up with and like Oceana and the jets flying and making noise and annoying people I guess I just don't want to see it go anytime soon 8/28/2005 8:30:20 PM |

i grew up there too and i was like "i can't name a single person i know who works in an oceana related job"
and aren't f-150s made around vb?

Yeah that's the better way of putting it.
Overt speech, covert intentions.
Seymour-Johnson actually has the best smart-ass ATC folks. Gotta love them.

i'm just pissed their closing Ft. Monroe. i know it wasn't doing a whole lot for the army but its too nice of place to close. oh well, there goes the last of the pre-civil war coastal batteries. a whole lot of history the army's unloading. 8/29/2005 9:50:54 PM |

Nah, Virginia Beach is the largest city in Virginia so they'll always have plenty of native economic development apart from the military -- mostly banks, lawyers and retail (especially as quickly as they're mowing down trees to throw up new strip malls).
And don't underestimate the $texas from tourism, there's a reason people keep voting Meyera Oberndorf back as Mayor for almost 20 years now
Whereabouts did you and Woodfoot grow up? Didn't realize there were that many of us VAB natives here on TDub

like i said, nothing very noteworthy or enticing as far as job market goes though
after i get outta college i would love to go back there, but there isn't anything job-wise that would allow that to happen
I grew up around the Princess Anne/Kellam area
Lived realitvely close to the Princess Anne Park (not the Salem side though), lived at the beach, lived on the outskirts of Pungo going towards Sandbridge
My mom grew up in Birdneck
My dad grew up in Kempsville
My mom worked at the city Treasurer's office when we lived there
I went to North Landing and then Landstown Elementary
Landstown Middle
And Kellam for 2 years8/30/2005 1:03:42 AM |
