I kinda like the thread

it demands for serious citizen involvement/brainstorming.

Is the US able to afford either of the two?

We never had a problem with deficit spending before. Why should it stop anyone now?

The deficits were never this huge

How many times has the US accepted foreign aid before?

True that in economic terms, all the foreign aid coming in translates to reduced American aid to these countries...but still

Now you have countries like Iran proposing sanctions relief in lieue of more oil.

^^ AFAIK, the US is running record deficits that now. If that doesn't classify as "huge" I don't know what does.

The impression I get is that we're accepting foreign aid not because we truly need it but more out of politeness to the countries we like (thus our spurning of aid from those near the bottom of the list).

That's not generosity, that's simply Iran trying to take advantage of the situation to offer a trade (and a reasonable one at that... I always thought the sanctions on Iran were silly).

As for affording one or the other, we'll probably do both and just trim some other domestic program instead.
