I'm going to pick up some dual sport beater in the next few months. Gots to be used, as I'm broke as shit. Thinking about either XR400 w/street legal kit, KLR 250, or the like. Any opinions or anything else to look for? 9/8/2005 2:51:42 PM |
pwnt All American 3052 Posts user info edit post |
XR 400 is a good bike. But for something that size, I like the Suzuki DRZ-400 better, like waaaaaay better.
My personal opinion, stay away from 250's. You won't be happy with them on the highway, though they're a blast offroad. 400's are about the perfect size to handle both with some efficiency.
Myself, I'm about to buy a KLR 650, so my advice probably means nothing. 9/8/2005 2:57:13 PM |

I should to dig my old xl75 out of the barn and rock that around campus
Price is going to be the biggest factor in this when it comes down to it. I just want something to dick around with in town and on some dirt roads. Longest trip would probably to uwharrie or something. 9/8/2005 3:03:33 PM |

If price is the biggest factor I'd look at some of the bikes that have been around for a long time. Suzuki DR-350, DR-650, Honda XR-650, Kawasaki KLR-650, etc. Any of those can be had for $1500-$2k.
The DRZ-400S is my favorite, but it is newer technology and costs more. I have seen quite a few go for $2500-$3k if that fits your price range, but they just haven't been around long enough to depreciate much more than that.

I could probably afford the gas cap for a Duke right now. Sweet ride though.
The more I think about that damn XL75, the more I want to tear it down, rebuild the engine (probably just rings and carb rebuild) and put tags on the bitch. That'd be fun as shit around here to tool around on. Still want the bigger bike of course.

I bet you could pick up a couple of beaters and parts bikes for maybe $600. The Trail 90's are kind of cult bikes, but any of those early jap bikes under 100cc's would work.
Hell I'll start with this little XL75 and go from there. I'm taking that shit to the track though. Low 30's in the quarter mile 9/8/2005 10:30:08 PM |

I've been trying to find some old 70's dual-sport two-stokers to play with. But damn they're hard to come by as well. Kinda like this one I had in my sights, but the guy decided to keep it. I may shed a tear now.......and it's a two-fiddy.

Gone in a puff of smoke sounding like a chainsaw. What was he asking for that smooth ride? 9/8/2005 10:44:46 PM |
pwnt All American 3052 Posts user info edit post |
He was asking a couple hundred $, and the fucker was pretty much torn down and in boxes. He wasn't really 'trying' to sell it. I just found out about it and went for it. Nice try, but no cigar as they say.
But keep your spirits up if you're looking for a budget dual-sporter...one of my last ones was a barn-spotter on the way to the beach. '81 Honda XL 250. Looked to be straight out of the 70's, big round headlight, skinny tank, dual rear shocks...$200. I rode that bike on trails with all the new "hot" motorcross bikes and they couldn't lose me, for long anyway. 9/8/2005 11:05:03 PM |

my grandpa has about 10 Honda Trail 90's, and at least one 110, only half of which are in working condition, and the other half arent complete since they have been scavenged for parts over the years

last summer in europe i saw some badass KTM dual sports, huge bikes with dual exhaust up the sides of the seat. I wish i had some pics

^^ Yeah...It was a thumper.
The dual was actually split right under the seat. Why do they do that? The two mufflers were physically different if you looked to the inside chamber, so I'm guessing each one had a purpose, but I never really knew what it was for. 9/13/2005 9:51:37 AM |
